How to do a clean install of Windows XP

Start by changing the BIOS setting to start from the CD drive first.
Then see below:

Michael Steven: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
more information: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm
and: http://www.theeldergeek.com/clean_installation_of_windows_xp.htm
also: http://www.bootdisk.com/

Also, make sure you have the drivers you need for your mother, video card
card, sound card, etc.
Try Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
He did a good job of providing a wealth of information, including key software codes
and you will need drivers for devices.

If you perform a clean installation on an existing PC which has XP already installed:
Check your code CD Key corresponds to what Belarc Advisor reports to your existing installation.
Note: Windows OEM installs usually come with a sticker on the PC or laptop and may not match the installed key factory.

Note: A number of vendors now supply restore CD or a restore hard disk partition
and, usually, do not provide a Windows XP CD.
