  Try to go to start | Search and type in msconfig and then disable the startup items and reboot and see if you get the same error.  It could be due to interference antivirus.  See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 you can also try compacting and repairing the database (see www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/), but I don't think that is the issue because another program seems to be from WinMail.  It could also be due to Windows Search indexing messages, so if you have it turned on, then go to control panel | Filtering options (I think it's location) and delete WinMail indexing courses.

  OK, so I have windows XP I am trying to install on my acer aspire 5100. Its an old copy that came with another computer. All I'm trying to do is to clean the computer clean and start over.   If you insist on doing things the way hard, then check first that download, you have to SP2 (you don't need SP1a because it is part of the SP2) is correct - check the hash of the file downloaded against one published (where you downloaded of?)

  If the hash is correct and then try running SFC/scannow from a command prompt - it may work, depending on how the software manufacturer set up the drive, but it is preferable to use in conjunction with a good OS disc, rather than the recovery disk.
