Looking for errors like this by doing a search on Google for the name of the file.  Usually, they turn up without success.

When a search in no hits or suspicious hits result, the answer is usually that the file in question is linked to the malicious software and your anti-malware application has deleted or quarantined file, but left to the Windows registry entry that tries to start the malicious software when you start your computer.

Download, install, update and run full scans with two of these free analytical tools:

    MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    SUPERAntiSpyware

Do not run the scans at the same time.  They can take some time, so start an and then go for a non computer chore for awhile.

If the scans does not solve the problem (and they can't, because the actual malware file has already been processed), then download and run Autoruns.  Click on the "Connection" tab and look in the column 'Image path' for the dll named in your error message.  If it is not displayed in the connection tab, click the "all" tab and use the file > search tool.  A characteristic of the search of Autoruns tool is that you must move the selection under the element line "found" before you "Find Next."

Once you find the line with the file in question, either "delete" or (if you want to be safer) uncheck the box.  The latter prevents the line running, but you can reactivate it later by removing the check mark.

  • Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll

    Hello everyone,

Recently, I received a very troublesome machine I have don't seem to not be able to solve. He began with thumbnails of Image not appearing is not in Windows Explorer.

Since then, I have studied the issue widely and have not yet found a solution. Here is a list of the things I've tried:

    • Open a jpg image with 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer' by using a right-click in Solution Explorer, and selecting 'Open with'. Result: "error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll system cannot find the file specified."
    • Check the existence of shimgvw.dll and there are of course. When I opened a back and 'cd' command line to C:\Windows\system32, enter "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll", the result is: "failed to LoadLibrary ("shimgvw.dll") - the system cannot find the file specified."
    • Next test was run "sfc/scannow" as suggested in the many messages on several online forums. This command runs for a while and returns without error. Tried the above steps once again, same results.
    • So I uninstalled SP3 through the Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. Has raced for a while. SP3 renewed. Has raced for a while. Still not perceived image and still the same error messages.
    • Finally, I got a Windows XP SP3 slipstream CD, that I created a while back and ran a repair of the system. All is very well, and when finally the system rebooted, everything was the same old.

I know that this may be easier to simply reinstall Windows XP Home fresh from scratch at this stage, but the user don't like this idea due to the loss of all applications, settings, etc.

I would appreciate some guidance on how to solve this problem.

    Thank you!
    Wolfgang

Since I have seen so many questions related shimgvw.dll on the web, that many people had not found a solution, I will post the solution I found. Thanks to some research more, I stumbled upon the Dependency Walker tool. http://www.DependencyWalker.com/ after the installation of this application, I was able to analyse fully what shimgvw.dll should be able to load all dependencies. Curiously, one of the DLLs it requires is gdiplus.dll, who, for some reason, in \windows\system32 but not exist inside a different application path I forgot now. Whatever it is, it should be noted that there is a 'properties' function in the Dependency Walker tool. Right-click the dll with red indicator and verify the path where a dll (in my case shimgvw.dll) tries to locate another dll file. I then just used the system32 gdiplus.dll and copied into the other lane and eventually I got with regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. Explorer then looked at thumbnails showing again and images and faxes were also back in business.

    Rundll system32

Next time put please the details of your question in the body of the message instead of the subject line.

The reranavu.dll file is malware. Either you have uninstalled the malware program or your antivirus/antispyware program did. In all cases, a reference has been left in the boot file. You can remove the reference by managing your startup.

Because you had a piece of malware, the chances are too high you had others. It would be a good idea to scan. I recommend to download and install MalwareBytes' anti-malware (MBAM) from http://www.malwarebytes.org . The program is free. (There is a paid version, but you don't need to buy it to remove the malware).

Manage startup - be done only when you are sure that the computer is completely free of malware:

(for XP) Start > run > msconfig [Enter]

This will open the System Configuration utility. Look under the Startup tab and find the likely culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, apply and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but next time you do, you will get a dialog box saying that you have used the utility. Just check the box that says in effect, "don't mind to this subject again".
