When you rename a file change the last timestamp consulted?

I was in a heated debate with one of my instructors today associated with a test on the access timestamp question when you rename a file. Through my research and testing to rename a file via the command prompt, it does not appear that the process of renaming a file will change the date of that last file access. Access and modify times will change to the directory that contains the file, but not the file itself.  So my understanding is that it is not, however, my instructor insists that it is, can someone shed some light on this topic please?

Windows NT keeps track of three stamps of time associated with files and directories. These three temporal are written in creation, last access, and last. When a file or directory is created, accessible or changed, Windows NT updates the appropriate time stamp.

NTFS uses the change log to track information on the added files, deleted and changed for each volume.

  • When you rename a file highlights only the name and not the name extension.

    Hi all

When I rename a file, it highlights only the name part of the file name and not the name extension.  I need the name of entire file highlighted when I rename a file.  Where is the setting to change this?

    Thank you

    Pete

    Hi Pete,.

Engineers also writes a blog on why they made this change, but to prevent millions of calls to support technical questions "I renamed my file and now it no longer opens.
It might be possible to change this behavior with editing the registry, but I couldn't immediately find a reference to such a value.
However, I have a workaround.  I usually press F2 to rename a file (I'm a lover of keyboard, hate having to use the mouse).  So I click on F2, then if I need to select both file extension, I can make one of these:
    • Press Ctrl-A
      or
    • Press SHIFT - end
I generally use the method of shift - end because it's closer where my fingers are already on the keyboard (I'm a lover of keyboard, but I'm too lazy).  Hope this helps at least a little.
  • Is it possible to cancel when you rename a file?

    (1) music files moved to mobile phone (USB mass storage mode)

    (2) phone has the limitation on the characters of filename

    (3) changed a filename and the next thing I know, I have 25 files renamed "BB King & Claption - Riding With the King" (of course, each with [2], [3], etc. [4] annexed)

    (4) looked anywhere obvious for "UNDO" command (NO obvious!)

    (5) waste of time connect the [so-called] relevant search terms help... Nada!

    (6) could someone please direct me to the absolutely necessary UNDO function in this case, work with files in a folder!

    Thank you, in advance.

There is a short window of opportunity to cancel action (move, rename, copy type) file in Windows Explorer or the windows folder using the Edition Menu (or by pressing Ctrl-Z).  You will see Cancel Rename as option for example.  Only the most recent file action is not achievable, so it is too late.

It seems that you had several selected files when you made the name change. When you have several selections that Windows renamed it using the name that you enter and sequential numbers in square brackets.

  • How can I get a "Détails" view - as the default - when you download a file, in the dialog box "enter the name of the file to save on...» » ?

When I get an attachment to an email (using Zimbra Imail, Firefox, Windows XP Pro) and I click on it and select 'Download', I get the dialog box "enter the name of the file to save on...» "(because I already have the option"always ask me where to save files. "But the view of default file always in a 'list '. At least recently. I don't remember it always does this. In any case, I want the value default to a 'Détails' view, in ascending order, I can find then things so much faster that way. (I often use the 'Update' tab to bring up, the latest version of a file.) I know that I can go to the Menu 'view' icon and select 'Détails', but whenever I go in a sub-folder in this dialog box, I have to do this all over again and it wastes a lot of time and attention.

I did some research on the internet but have not found a way to solve this problem.

    Try this:

    a. open my documents, press the alt key.

    b. click on Tools. Click on folder options.

    c. click on the view tab and select Reset and check records.

How can I change it please help me...
Visit this link for the dialog that I saw when I am trying to rename the file

Looks like you are trying to remove the extension. Probably because you do not know its there - by default, Windows HIDES extensions knows it.

Use Control Panel-folder Options (or select it from the Tools drop-down in Windows Explorer). Click the view tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", and then click OK.

The name of your file will now show you its extension, i.e. the bit after the point. The extension defines what program will try to open the default file. If you change the extension so it can not open by double click.

When you rename, do not change the bit after the point, unless you know it's the right thing to do.
