Change your Windows Update settings to NEVER. Who will stop it immediately. Then leave forever to keep it from MS to do what he wants. You will then take the responsibility to do the Windows updates when they should be done once a month, a few days after the 2nd Tuesday.
I advise my clients to refuse all updates in the WINDOWS which are not labelled SECURITY.

If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.

It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.

Recently, I applied the latest service pack for the 32-bit version of Vista and have had frequent accidents of Internet Explorer. Today, he seems to have done an automatic update (that he did, and did often in the 3 years I've owned the computer). But he is frozen on the screen that says do not do "power off or unplug... installation update 1 of 1. It's a little scary, and I don't know what to do.
I ran windows defender scan yesterday and the system was clean. Basic security hang after about 2/3 of green square were lit.
Of course, I write from another machine.

Hi all, I have recently experienced some of the problems reported here: - Windows update doesn't work (stuck at 0% for the hours) - Windows cannot stop ("preparing to set up Windows. Please don't turn off your computer") - MSE is out of date - I can't unzip files - some programs no longer work - I just can't stop some services (like Windows update). It times out. etc... I have Win7 X 64, and the last update that has worked with success has been about 3 weeks ago. Thanks for your help!
Very well.

I turned my computer off every night. As soon as I hit the start button to shut up, a message appears telling me not to disconnect or shut down as 1-3 (sometimes more) updates are being installed. I have to wait until they are installed before I can finish closing. I get muy updates aujtomatically. I would like know how to stop this message. Thank you.
You stop this msg by reviewing windows update settings and select it to inform, and then you choose your own time to install.
However if this msg appears that often, you should review the history update windows to asertain what updates fail, you then have to fix this problem

MY HP (VISTA) computer is locked in a loop. It keeps on rebooting after the following windows message appears: ' updated configuration: stage 3 3-0% complete. ". Do not turn off your computer. "It has been in the loop for 3 days. ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET IT FOR FREE. I tried most of the things that I can think of.
The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista and Windows 7
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/949358Obviously you can not run the troubleshooter, read the article and go to method 2, etc.
Method 2: Use the system restore feature
Note You must be logged to Windows with an administrator account to complete this method. If it is a computer that is part of a network at work, you should ask the system administrator for help. For more information about how to connect to Windows as an administrator, visit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-do-I-log-on-as-an-administrator
(http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-do-I-log-on-as-an-administrator)Note If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or a DVD, or if Windows was preinstalled on your computer without the CD or DVD, see the documentation that came with the computer for instruction about how to continue, or go to method 2.
When you start your computer by using the Windows installation disc, you can run recovery system at boot options. To do this, follow these steps:
Windows startup :
- Insert the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc into the drive and restart the computer.
- When you are prompted to start from the disc, press any key any.
- When you are prompted, configure the language to install, time and currency formatsand keyboard or input method options that you want, and then click Next.
- Click on repair your computer.
Select a restore point:
- In the System Recovery Options page, click the version of the Windows operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
- In the System Recovery Options page, click System Restore.
- On the System Restore page, click Next.
- Select a restore point during which you know the operating system works, and then click Next.
The restore point should be a date that precedes the first time you encountered the error. To select a date, use the option to choose a different restore point , and then click Next.
- If you are prompted to choose which disk to restore, select the hard disk, and then click Next.
- In the confirm your restore point page, click Finish.
- When the restore process is complete, click restart.
Note To avoid this problem in the future, see the steps in the "More information" section
If the error persists, try Method 2.
Method 3: Use the functionality in Place Upgrade
Performing one set to update restores the current installation of Windows to the version of the installation DVD. It also requires the installation of all the updates that are not included on the installation DVD. If your computer came with Windows pre-installed, review the documentation for your computer for instructions on how to make a place in upgarde. Otherwise, follow these steps:
Note: It is strongly recommended that you back up all your personal files. For more information about how to back up your files, please visit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-your-files
(http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-your-files)- Insert the Windows Vista or Windows 7 DVD into the DVD drive of the computer.
- In the settings window, click install now.
- Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
- Click on start and type Drive: \setup.exe in the box to start the search. Note The placeholder drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD, usually D:\.
- List programs, click Setup.exe.
- In the settings window, click install now.
- Click connect to get the latest updates for installation (recommended).
- Type the CD key if you are prompted to do so.
- Select the operating system on the Install Windows page, you want to upgrade.
- Click Yes to accept the Microsoft software license agreement.
- On the which type of installation you want? of the screen, click upgrade.
- Once the installation is complete, restart your computer.
