I did this by going to tools, then account settings, and settings of the server, and then in the server settings uncheck "check for new messages at startup" and "Check for new messages every _ minutes." I then clicked on "OK". Thunderbird always check new messages when I open it and every so often during the day. How can I fix? Apparently, I have a Courier IMAP server, if that makes a difference.

  Also, go into server setting for this account and click on the setting on the server , click Advanced. Uncheck the box use the Idle command and see if that helps.

  The key is that you have to allow this program through your windows firewall.

  This is very unusual.  Two thoughts come to mind.
