Where vCenter Server must be installed?

Hello

VCenter Server needs to be installed? On-site at our data center, and also an instance at our office, or is it just one instance per company? < / make >

Hello.

In general, there will be an instance of vCenter installed "side" the ESX host, it manages.  You can then use the client vSphere from anywhere on the network to interact with the vCenter.  There could be a vCenter and then several customers vSphere used from multiple locations to manage.

Where are your ESX servers located?

Are you looking for vCenter redundancy, or something else?

Good luck!

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server to vCenter Server 5.1 5.1 update 1 when the SQL database is remote and vCenter Server Heartbeat is installed

    Hi guys,.

I'm in the middle of an upgrade to vSphere 5.1 5.1 vSphere update 1. I have vCenter protected by HB and SQL on a separate computer (also protected by HB) I also run Syslog, Update Manager and Proxy authentication on vCenter.

I've successfully upgraded HB on all 4 nodes (2 x vCenter & 2 x SQL) and started the upgrade components on the secondary according to the •vCenter Server Heartbeat 6.5 server and vCenter Update 1 Installation on Windows Server 2008 when the secondary server is virtual (PDF) http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcenter-server-heartbeat-65-u1-installation-windows-2008-virtual-guide.pdf

    I got to step 3.c

    3. change the primary/active server role:

a launch of the vCenter Server Heartbeat wizard configure server and click the tab of the Machine to change the server role for the current server (primary) to the active State and click Finish.

b using the Service Control Manager, start the Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter service.

c using the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console, check that all the status icons on the server: summary page are green indicating that the boot process is completed and protected from all the services are started.

d using the Service Control Manager, stop the service Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter.

As the vCenter service does not start, I'm stuck at this point. As far as I'm concerned, the error is quite logical. I've updated vCenter using the secondary server, and then I'm trying to connect (according to the guide) with another version that breaks down.

If I continue with the services stop and launch the installer SSO, it is trying to perform an uninstall!

Did I miss something in this upgrade?

Hi guys, VMware have finally updated the documentation to reflect the right way forward: https://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/heartbeat_pubs.html U1 6.5 Select from the menu drop-down and you'll see the last date of update for each of the documentation is now 10/10/2013. The guide States now specifically to restore the vCenter database before proceeding with any other measure, this is copied below for convenience: "the upgrade of the main server of the upgrade process further guess upgrading the secondary server completed successfully. Procedure 1 before continuing the upgrade process, perform a restore of the database of vCenter Server, Single Sign-On database, VMware Update Manager database and SSL certificates that were backed up in step 4 on the secondary server. regards Ciaran

  • VCenter server cannot be installed on Windows 2003 x 64 datacenter

I have a server I was planning on installing vCetner to manage the virtual machine. However, when I run the Setup and I click Next I get the error:

"the following components cannot be installed on this operating system:

    VMware Virtualcenter Server

    VMware Update manager

Does anyone know why it does not install not on the 2003 Windows Datacenter edition? Or how can I get past this?

I thought he might have because I already have the free version of Vmware Server out there, but I tested it on my Windows XP computer and it was fine with the installation.

    Any ideas?

  • Why install first vCenter Server?

    Hi all

in vSphere Installation and configuration English vCenter Server is first installed in a facility ESXi itself later.

I'm trying to understand why. Is there some reason first of all install ESXi and vCenter Server?

You can install these components in any order you want. In case you want to run vCenter Server as a virtual machine, you must actually configure ESXi before vCenter Server.

  • vCenter Server and Manager on the same virtual machine and on the same host ESXi update that they manage

    Hi all

I have a question to which I did not respond.

I have an ESXi 5 on Proliant DL380 G7 server host. I want to install vCenter Server and Manager Update on one of the Server 2008 R2 VM on the same host. I know it's possible, but my question is how Update manager will provide updates to the same ESXi host it will run on? The update is applied every time host must spend in maintenance mode and power off the virtual computer running on this subject which means he'll kill VM where vCenter Server and Update Manager is running and the update will fail right?

Is that possible at all or the VCS and UM such as a virtual computer operating point is updated to other guests if you have them or vMotion as VM to another host when you want to update the VCS and UM host is running?

    Thanks in advance.

It will not work.  You will need at least two hosts.  This way you can vMotion the vCenter VM to another host.  From there, you can use VUM.  Otherwise, you will need to patch the host as a stand-alone host.

See below for patching a standalone host

  • Is it possible to run vCenter Server and AUVS in the same database?

Hello. My client has vCenter Server and VUM installed and running in the same database. Yes, the same database (not only same server database) and the same ODBC (ODBC VUM is 32-bit only).

My question is whether it is supported or not and I would like a source VMware information, not only "it works fine for me".

I can't find any definitive info on this VMware. Only something to wave in the installation and upgrade guides about or not to run in the same database ' ' (I guess they mean 'server') and it seems that the recommendation is to separate them for the 'large environments,' whatever that means.

The environment vSphere 4.1 is currently, and there are about 20 guests and 150 virtual machines.

If it is not supported, I guess the best way to go is to reinstall both from scratch?

    Thanks in advance!

    / Anders

Yes, it is a supported configuration.  Since VUM and vCenter using different tables, you can share the same DB

The database of the update manager that you use can be identical to the vCenter Server database. You can also use a
separate database, or you can use existing database clusters. For best results in a large scale environment, you
must use a dedicated Update Manager database that is located on one computer other than the
    the vCenter Server system database.

    Hello

I would like to know during the upgrade to vCenter Server 5.0 calls a new license key or he use of the existing version license key.

I have vCenter Server 4.1 installed so Standard 6 hosts ESXi 4.1 installed with vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses each with 2 CPU. I plan to upgrade my environment of virtualization to vCenter Server 5.0 and vSphere Enterprise Plus 5.0, please someone can me brief on conditions of license - can I use the vCenter 4.1 existing licenses vSphere 4.1 upgrade to version 5.0, so I don't want to buy new licenses.

Hoping to receive information about my queries.

    Kind regards

    Nikhil

No, not if you have a valid support and subscription.

You must visit the portal of licenses to upgrade the license (I think).

I myself did last week and I'm sure that even if I already had a job entirely vCenter 4.1, I was required to enter the new license v5.0 file.

Please log in the https://server-ip:9443 / with [email protected] user and password defined during installation. Your vcenter will then appear in the inventory. After that, you will be able to add guests.

  • where and how much Vcenter must be installed? as a virtual machine or physical host? -config is 2xESXi40 - CX4 - 120 1xEMC2 - DAS mode

    "BEST PRACTICE RECOMMENDATION.

I work with 1 ESXi40 in DAS mode very good and everything is fine.

I have still a few servers production of Phisical aditional to be virtualized, but before that

We cultivate our virtual infrastructure by adding a second Esxi40 and installing the Virtual Center software and license to use HA, Vmotion, etc..

the questions and the thing is, if I'm migrating all my hosts physic to the VMs system, do I need a new physical server to install Virtual Center, yes or no.

    and why?

If this is not the case, the Vcenter can be virtualized, and what is the best practice to do this.

which of the following configuration might be valid, the best recommendation and why and why not.

    (a) create 1 Vcenter VM, located in a data store on the hard drive that comes a host of Esxi40

    (b) create 1 Vcenter VM, created storage located in a data store that comes from the CX4-120, and the group contains 1 ESXi40 physical host

    (c) create 1 Vcenter VM, created storage located in a data store that comes from the CX4-120, and the group contains 2 ESXi40 physical hosts

    (d) create 2 Vcenter VW, created storage located in a data store that comes from the CX4-120, and the group contains 1 ESXi40 physical host

    (c) create 2 Vcenter VM, located in a data store that comes from the CX4 - 120, ahd, the storage group created containds 2 ESXi40 physical hosts

    Thank you

    MC.

    You're too complicate things...

Do the vCenter as a virtual machine, which gives the requirements for processors, RAM, etc... Place it on a data store available to BOTH hosts. In fact, I would make sure that ALL s LUN where sit all VM are available for BOTH ESXi servers.

I recommend also using a full SQL Server for the db, is not using SQL Express. If you have a SQL 2005 server, use it. If you want to future proof, vCenter things, put on a 64 bit OS (so you're ready for vCenter 4.1 and ESXi 4.1). Having the SQL database on a real SQL Server (other than the server vCenter Server/VM) makes things a lot easier on the road...

  • vCenter Server 5.1 fresh install database MSSQL w/box

    Hi all

Looking for advice on how best to manage a new installation of vCenter Server 5.1 using a MSSQL database out of area.  Have done some research and looked at some of the videos that are out there, but have not found quite what I'm looking for.  So, I thought I would post.  Be gentle - I'm a bit new to the vMware environment.

Here's my scenario.  And if there is a link/doc/post/video that covers what I'm after - very well.  Looking for a little help on searching for it.  If this isn't the case, direct responses will be fantastic.

-Need to build a 5.1 vCenter server and use a MSSQL off the coast of the MessageBox database.  Out the door, I started with 6 guests and 24 guests, which, as I understand it, is just a little bigger than SQL Express can handle.  And the footprint of the host/guest is likely to increase over time.

-Have available to build the DB MSSQL 2008 R2 cluster on.

-My company has vMWare/vCenter existing deployments, but my particular scenario is going to be a unique and independent facility.

-ESXi hosts will be 5.0 update 1 (to stay in our internal model of best practices).

-vCenter maybe 5.1 for purposes of property management.

-Also need to run the Update Manager, as I understand it, kind of excludes the version 'device' vcenter, or at the very least, a little complicated.

-Leaning towards the Simple installation of vCenter 5.1.  Know that this will launch the single sign on the server, the inventory Service and the vCenter Server installed.  And that the installation of the Update Manager will be a 4th installation (and hopefully last).

Where I am a little confused:

-Discrete databases how should I really?  A school of thought (and practical in our 'other' vMWare environment) is 1 DB for each app on Cree.  This seems a bit complicated, but if this is the way it must be, so be.

-I think I can run only a database and each of the 4 required applications would build/use the necessary table space they need.  Is this correct or am I far from base?

-1 single database, if feasible, should I use a master service flavoured AD account for everything, or should I watch different service AD for different functions accounts.

Not quite sure I'm being quite clear on what I'm after, fire so far with follow-up if necessary issues.

1 DB for SSO, 1DB for VC and 1 DB for MUV.

SSO DB needs to execute scripts (in your search for ISO for scripts to prepare your SQL DB:(:\Single Sign On\DBScripts\SSOServer\schema\mssql))

The inventory service has its own DB.
