The trick is to create a new master catalog that starts in white, shoot in the first catalog (does not move the files), then it repeats with the second catalogue, which will search for and avoid the dupes, yet once again move the files.  The end result is a catalog of master handset, with files and all changes for all files in the two catalogues.  It worked for me.  Thank you, you were thinking in the right direction.
