  A default program is the program used by Windows when you open a particular type of file, such as a music file, an image, or a Web page. For example, if you have more than one web browser installed on your computer, you can choose one of them to be the default browser.

  Open default programs by clicking the Start button, click default programs.

  In the default programs, you can:

  ·         Set your default programs. This option allows to choose the programs that Windows uses by default. If you want to use your Media Player to open all media files, use this option.

  ·         If a program does not appear in the list, you can make the default program using set Associations.

  ·         Open default programs by clicking the Start button, click default programs.

  ·         Click associate a file type or Protocol with a program.

  ·         Click on the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default.

  ·         Click on the program of change.

  ·         Click the program that you want to use by default for the selected file type, or click the arrow next to other programs to show other programs.   Go to start / Default programs / associate a file or Protocol with a program and do scroll up until you get in .txt.  It's probably on the notebook.  Click on change and change for Microsoft Word (you may need to search for winword.exe somewhere in Program Files) and save your work and exit.  In the future, .txt files will be opened with Microsoft Word.

  If this happens with the .doc, .docx, .rtf, or other files that MS Word can open, and then do the same with these types of files that you did with .txt above.

  Pages ' 08 is located in your Applications/iWork ' 08 folder.

  If you open your old documents Pages ' 08 with 5 Pages it will convert and if not damage, remove a large number of useful features.

  You will probably regret upgrading to 5 Pages which Apple has made extremely inconsistent and keeps changing its file format.
