  Your description is a bit confusing.
  So here are my Tips how to connect the laptop for WiFi using the Vista operating system.

  According to your WiFi (Atheros or Intel) card I advise to use a WLan configuration as Atheros Client Utility or Intel ProSet Utility tool.

  You can use these tools to configure WLan. I use one of these tools and I can connect and configure the WiFi network very easily.

  If you want to use the Vista WLan own configuration options, can access the network locations and right click on the WiFi connection.
  Choose then rebuilt Waln connection or something like that.
  Then choose your WLan which has been configured on the router WLan and put the right encryption settings and you should be able to connect to you wirelessly.
