Why file desktop.ini opens in Notepad when I start?
Whenever I have my laptop startup (which is running XP Professional), the desktop.ini file opens in a Notepad file. How can I prevent that to happen?
Thank you!
You don't need to change all attributes on these files. All you have to do is show off system files in Solution Explorer. Hidden files can always be on. Then, they will not appear on the desktop, but they'll appear when you search using the file Explorer. And everything still works.

Can not find the file desktop.ini
I back up my files each week to an external hard drive. When I get asked if I want to copy the desktop.ini file in the HARD disk. Problem is that I can not find where this file is actually located and therefore can not delete it on the source computer. I would like to remove this file to avoid the annoying question whenever I try to save my computer.
I changed the settings for source computer to view the files and hidden folders. After you perform a file search, the system shows a path to the c:\users\valued customer\appdata\roaming\norton utilities 14.This folder contains only a log of the entries, none of which can be edited or deleted. Not sure if I do something wrong by looking for the file "ini".Does anyone have any suggestions? You are welcome.
To clarify, I'm not Andy. I copied and included the link where he was enrolled in its resolution in order to give credit where it is due.
If you don't use Norton, use the uninstall tool to remove all traces of the software. If she has appeared in the past about the 30 day trial and you disabled, perhaps why the desktop.ini file is displayed.
See the solution re: lack of desktop.ini
This fixit deletes the file
Notepad starts with "[.]". "ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21787" when you start your computer

Places suggested to search for the file
Look here for the desktop.ini
- : \Documents and Settings\All Users\Menu Menu\Programs\Startup

Disable the creation of files desktop.ini in Windows 8
Hi all
I want to know if this is a way to disable the creation of files desktop.ini, at least in the desktop system folder.
I knew that under XP there was a DWORD key which should be created to avoid creating all the desktop.ini files in the computer.
I don't want the desktop.ini file features (personalization of icon, remembering the last display in each folder options, etc.)
So I don't want to hide the desktop.ini files. I want to remove them and avoid Windows 8 create again and again.
If Microsoft has disabled this customization which was present in the earlier version of Windows and now is not available (to disable the creation of files desktop.ini) just say. If there is some other registry key to be created or modified, please advise.
Thank you
Pablo.
Hi Pablo.
I would like to inform you that the Desktop.ini is a system file that addresses common issues, such as downloads, Documents, photos and music etc. When a change is made in these files, Desktop.ini is updated.
Deleting the file will cause problems with the operating system and it is not recommended to delete the files. The default desktop.ini a hidden system file and read-only attributes assigned.
If you want to stop these messages, go to the files through Search Options, click settings and you will see the Folder Options, click on it and the view tab and scroll down until you see "Hide protected operating system files (recommended) and put a checkmark in the box."
Hope that answers your query. You can write back to us for other queries/problems related to windows and we will be happy to help you further.

This just startedudden there are no restore file. Files will not open or close when I open in Vista, try opening a shortcut of .exe, that the screen lights up. It really confuses me
I would say to uninstall Norton AV software using the Norton Uninstall program.
Go to Mode safe mode with networking
Download the following tool and run a scan full to eliminate malicious software hidden in files.

Why I don't receive in windows when I start my computer?
Recently, I lost internet because of configuration problems. Who is fixed and now I'm able to go back to the internet. But now, whenever I start my computer, rather than make the home and get into windows, I get a black screen that says that it is a screen of recovery console for windows and need to enter an administrative password. I have to go to F8 to go to start windows normally, whenever I turn it on. Can someone help me with this problem?
Looks like you need rebuild your file "boot.ini". This article should help you get into your Recovery Console:
"Recovery console" <> http://www.theeldergeek.com/recovery_console.htm >
Then you should try to use the 'Bootcfg rebuild' command to rebuild your boot.ini file:

Every time after I get a Firefox Nightly update and run it, it will display the next page:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/firstrun/?oldversion=30.0 which is fine.
But when it opens this page, all my desktop icons go clear/white and one by one, they all return with their correct icons. And all this happens in a few seconds.
Why is the operation of Firefox every night for the first time, my desktop icons?I suspect that you have both nightly and Firefox version installed?
"The Firefox 'about' shows 30.0. and I've now checked for updates and are now running 33.1.1"
It's different from what you have first published here with!
Firefox 33.1.1 represents the latest version - a 32-bit version.Whereas, the version you first posted here with was a generation of 64-bit channel every night from July. Every night is for "Alpha-testers" and is updated every day, where the name of "night".
Everything that happens in the background on the Windows desktop should not be of concern right now, every night Win 64 bit is several months out.
If you really want to test the Win 64 Nightly builds, follow and participate in the very different evenings and son of 'channels' on MozillaZine forum is based. -

You may need to reset your associated file.
Try this... open a folder of images and right-click
your file image... from the menu, select... Open
With / choose program.Make your choice from the list, or click Browse for the
correct program if it is not in the list. If you want
the Windows XP default... choose "Windows".
Picture and Fax Viewer'.Once you make your choice... don't forget to check
the box that says: "always use the selected program."
to open this type of file. (you will need to do
for each format, jpg, .tif, .gif... etc.)Also... you can right click an image and the
menu... Choose... Properties / change button...
Choose the program you want to use, then click on...
OK / apply / OK.Also, in Windows XP, you can go to... My computer.
Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...Or... See the following link.
(FWIW... it's always a good idea to create a system)
Restore point before editing the registry)Utility to repair image file associations
http://WindowsXP.MVPs.org/imgassofix.htmIf this is not the answer... try the following link:
By clicking on the "open with" or "choose program...
"the option always opens the file with Notepad.
