Why is my hard drive (external) working on a Windows PC, but not on my Mac?

I recently got a few files transferred to a friends computer to my external hard drive and when I plugged back on my Mac it wasn't appearig in the finder or disk utility. The power led on the hard drive lit. When I plugged it in my friends mac hard drive was there, but when you clicked on the folders they were all empty. We then plugged on a Windows computer, and it worked fine! What keeps it from working on Mac?

Thanks for the help

Hi Rotherham:

The hard drive has been formatted in Mac (Mac OS Extended journaled) format.

He worked on your Mac before that?

Were the files that you copied from another Mac or Windows computer?

You say you plugged into a computer in the window and it worked fine.

A Windows computer will not read an external hard drive that is formatted as OS extended (journaled).

So maybe it is formatted in NTFS in Windows.

  • XPS 8300: Install new hard drive 3 TB BSOD results after imaging but not after Win7 clean

I have a XPS 8300 and the original Seagate 2 TB hard drive is dead. Because being forced to install a new HARD drive, I opted for 3 TB and bought a WD because I had horrible luck with Seagate repeatedly.

Anyway, I installed the new HARD drive and booted from the Windows 7 64 bit Pro installation disc and attached my external drive to backup and choose the backup image to the new disk. It completed without error, but when the computer restarts, I get a blue screen of death with the 7B stop code. I tried to put the HARD drive in a box and attached to another computer, and all my image files are there so I know that the computer was able to write the image to the new HARD disk. How to fix the BSOD errors? I set to update to the latest version of the BIOS (A06) but always the blue screen. I tried to install the latest Intel drivers also and which does not seem to do anything.

Frustrated, I installed Windows 7 clean on this drive and I am writing this message from him. The drive appears in my computer as a 2 TB. Disk Management displays 100 MB System Reserved Partition, Partition C: of 2047 GB and 746 GB unallocated.

Why a new installation does not seem to work (I know that I would have to format the 746 GB to use it and to give it a new drive letter) but the imagery that the disc breaks down. What Miss me?

I've seen a lot of posts on using Intel drivers to solve similar problems. These drivers get breaths during the imaging process? Should they be installed before the imagery of the backup? (Thought that I did, but maybe I didn't do it right - their installation can be verified before the disk imaging?) Tried to call Dell and Windows support... am no where in a hurry.

    Hi LG1382,

You cannot start Windows 7 on a 3 TB drive. You can use it for data, but not as the system drive. Windows 7 can only start TPG on systems with BIOS UEFI, which does not the 8300.

    original title: help

After a hard drive crash, I reinstalled my operating system to windows 7.  However, I think that he is "buried" and unused o my new hard drive.  Instead, it SEEMS that I have windows NT, & a mix of properties in VISTA and 7.  I much prefer to have a real operating system, as opposed to the almost "virtual" NT  However, those who have themselves appointed trustee-directors, left me with little control over my own computer.  I understand that right now I NEED administrators.  I would be grateful however, certain controls - and certainly some understanding- of what is happening with my own computer: like, where to FIND things, OPEN & USE some of my own stuff.  Help!

Have you installed the operating system? If so, your default user account is an admin user.

  • PC stopped recognizing 3.5 hard drive external Toshiba

    Hi all

I have a 3.5/250 GB Toshiba hard drive external. I use Windows XP as my operating system and for some reason, my PC stopped recognizing saying 'USB not recognized '.
It is supposed to be taken & play and I'm sure that I didn't have a driver, when I installed it.
If anyone can help or has any suggestions, I would be grateful.

    Thank you

    Malc

    Hallo Malc

It is possible that you have removed the external device without using the option remove the device safely. Restart the machine and try again.

Otherwise, you can remove all ports USB device manager and start option to add material on the list. After detection and installation it should work again.

  • Hi all. How can I manage the preferences that LR do not take up space on my MAC hard drive and works only on the external hard drive?

Hi all. I am new and on a free trial right now.

How can I manage the preferences that LR do not take up space on my MAC hard drive and works only on the external hard drive?

    Monthly payment included cloud storage?

Peut I manage backups? And how?

    -Amir

    Hi amireos,

Yes, you can create your workflow where you can keep all your images on the external hard drive and the Lightroom catalog file as well.

If you start with Lightroom and then use the Destination location as external hard drive when you import your image of the external source such as a camera or SD.

If you already have your Images on the Mac HD drive, then play all your Image on the external hard drive first and then import images directly from there.

Finally, you can change the location of the Lightroom Catalog as well.

Default location: folder on the Mac Drive HD, there is folder called Lightroom that you can move on the external drive too (however catalog Lightroom can't memory space as its only import previews of the images is not the real image and full)

Once you move the file catalog Lightroom external hard disk, then you need to browse the catalog file when you launch Lightroom only once.

See thread: LR catalog moving on external hard drive

Let us know if it helps.

    Kind regards

  • HARD drive only works with 5 UDMA on Satellite A100-906

Why the disk hard s - ata on A100-906 works with the MODE ULTRA DMA 5 and not 6 or higher it should be with the controller s - ata.

    Hello

    How did you check that?

    Just for info:
    The UDMA 5 Mode = UDMA100 and UDMA133 the UDMA Mode 6
Perhaps the DMA controller supports the UDMA133 but the HARD drive doesn't.
Sometimes the UDMA133 is not automatically enabled on hard drives.

    For example:
I read that the UDMA Mode 5 is activated automatically on the Samsung drives and if someone wants to use mode UDMA 6 then must be activated manually.
In this case, the application of the 3rd part is necessary as Hutil.

  • "Access denied" error on all hard drives external and MagicDisc

I just purchased a Lenovo B575 running Win7 Home Premium and I'm very frustrated that I can't access my external hard drives, which are essential to my work. I get the error "Access denied" the normal start, but I'm able to use disks normally in safe mode. Here are some of the things I've tried:

-Change the permissions/ownership after normal startup: does not work. Windows doesn't let me change the permissions or ownership, even if my single user account is set to administrator.

-Change the permissions and ownership in safe mode: I found a solution online saying "Everyone" to add to the list of users in the Security tab. It works * temporary *, until I unplug my hard drives. When I plug back them, it's back to square one.

-Install MagicDisc to access some files I saved in the form of ISO images: MagicDisc seems to work very well and load images normally... but also, I get the error "Access denied" when you try to open the drive in Explorer.

    -USB flash drives: same problem.

-Other erratic behavior: one of my USB drives will not stop read/write as soon as I plug. I don't know if it's the McAfee antivirus analysis each of millions of files that I have on this subject, or if something else is happening.

I had NONE of these issues on my old Acer and HP to my friend has no problem loading my readers. If I can't find a solution soon, I'll be forced to return this laptop that I need to access my work files.

I lost my patience all yesterday and not the OneKey Rescue, restore my system to nine. Then, I named my new laptop of the same name that my old (relevant at all?). He immediately provoked a hard drive to work. The 750 GB it does not work yet, but I changed the permissions AND ownership to "Everyone" in SafeMode... now it seems to work correctly. No problem with other removable disks.

That they are related or not, I have not initialized or changed some settings on the programs supplied with the laptop. My guess is that port Locker has something to do with the question I had - even if it has been disabled before. I'm uninstalling as I did not need. BioExcess, face recognition... everything goes down the drain. These should be optional, not enabled by default. Too many background services! I'm disabling a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

  • HARD drive external (E :) hangs and then said: "Not responding" when trying to backup.)

Original title: backup on an external hard drive

I'm trying to back up my files on an "External" hard drive It's me E: drive as the location, but it just hangs up there says "not responding". I tried to do an "Archive" in the "My Documents" folder, I saw files transfer, however all my names of my files are now blue in 'My documents' whatever that means? What drive letter should go a hard drive 'external '? I should be able to click on that drive and see what is on my external hard drive, but it doesn't "not responding"...

External drive (E :) will not name until you give him one.  It is possible that the disk has not been formatted yet.

Open disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK).
You will see something like this:

You will have a line for 'Disk 2' but which shows next to your "disc 1". Please provide ALL information in the "Disk 1" line.

For example, if you had the image above, the response from you I'm looking for would be:

    Disc 1 - Basic - 186,31 GB - online
    Ghost images (D :) - 93,13 GB NTFS - healthy (active))
    Data backup (E :) - 50,57 Go NTFS - healthy)
    42.61 GB - not assigned

  • Transfer Media Player on a hard drive external?

I run XP and bought an external hard drive to my music collection.  Is it possible to transfer the Media Player itself on the hard drive external?  I'd rather play on Media Player on those of the drive, that there is none.  Choose a record and that's all that you can play at the same time; No shuffle or several artists in one sitting.

    Any suggestions, anyone?

There is no need to transfer WMP itself hard disk external, WMP can perfectly handle music on other players.

In WMP, please press F3 to display add it to the library, make sure that Advanced Options are displayed and add the folder music on the external hard drive in the list. Now, all the music on the hard drive will be added to the WMP library.

  • Get the old hard drive to work on the new processor

I am a PC Tech company with problems on PC at home.

My Win 7 Home Premium Dell Studio T435/9000 dead.  It was a motherboard problem, I chose not to replace the CPU/Mo with a duplicate.  The hard disk MBR is good, I could read it and when I installed in an Optiplex 990 at work, it is initialized.

I had the chance to receive a new Dell T5610 with 2 CPUs of a parent.  It came with professional Win7 preinstalled on an SSD, UEFI boot on a GPT disk.  But all my apps are absent and even a rat-pack obsessives like me do not have all the CD and install the files for the various applications on the old hard drive.

I want to use my old hard drive on the new PC, then after that it's stable, migrate the old hard drive to the SS disc supplied with the PC.

First problem was to learn the differences between MBR and GPT.  After this was learning that Home Premium does not work on a PC with two separate processors.  I use Win7 professional for that.  With the help of this forum, I was able to do this by using the Optiplex 990.  I run Win7 Professional on the Optiplex 990.

I take the former home of hard disk go BIOS to legacy.  Old hard drive that boots on 990, does not start on T5610.

I try various advanced options, safe mode, low-resolution video, nothing works.  I get a BSOD is a hard drive error, STOP 040000007 B.

I try Startup Repair tool and get the following:

    Problem event name

    Offline Startup Repair

    1 6.1.7600.16385

    2 6.1.7600.16385

    5 Autofailover

    6 1

    7. bad driver

    6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 OS version

    Locale 1033

How can I get my old hard drive to work with the new processor.  Is it a question of Dell, a Win7 Office.  As the hard drive starts up successfully on another CPU, I believe that the hard drive is good.

Thank you very much for your help!

Thanks to you all.  But the solution was completely different.

Dell said the motherboard on the accuracy was so different from my old PC that unless I reinstalled Win7 Professional from scratch on the old hard drive, motherboard would not work with the old hard drive.

They have guaranteed that the old hard drive would work on a 8700 XPS.  After some problems, I managed to do the work.  Problem solved.

    1. with respect to the first question: your system files have been corrupted. Do a System Restore before the app was used.

Try you "tune up", "maximize", "registry cleaners" or any what kind of app that promises to improve the performance of your PC somehow. None of them improve anything, often at the antipodes (as you discovered). Microsoft W7 already has all the apps. you need to keep your PC in tip-top condt. Try not to add anything.

All these various named apps. are all 'snake oil' and very dangerous to use. However, you will find a lot of 'logic' online promo. material from "authoritarian" sites as to how will be beneficial for your PC. Not drawn in by these Advertorials :)

2 the hidden partition is probably "restore to factory condt." partition rescue/recovery of the manufacturer of your computer. This can be used for the rescue of PC when things diabolically wrong with your operating system and cannot be set by any other means. You need an ISO image (clone) of the OS partition and MBR (master boot record) only, not the entire HARD drive.  Including the partition of relief are a very good idea but I'm not familiar with the software cloning you use.

Download Macrium Reflect free edition for purposes of cloning and recovery and make the CD

image recovery disk. He advises you to do so (by steps in the simple wizard driven) before using the program for anything regardless of whether the image.

  • Hard drive 1 t good on Win 7 but Raw on Win 8

I recently updated my desktop computer to a new computer with Windows 8. I have a the West Dtgital 1 t hard drive in an external USB2 / eSATA case and the player has a SATA connection inside the housing. I use this hard drive to store photos and videos, etc., not as boot drive. I also have a laptop running Win 7 (company policy) which has an eSATA port and the external hard drive works perfectly on the laptop. It's about half full and NTFS file system. When I plug the external drive into the new office to win 8, it appears like a record GROSS (1 t) and is not available in windows (it is recognized as the correct material in the BIOS and in the Disk Manager). Any attempt to look at the drive in Windows Explorer arrives with a request that I have to format the drive, sure something I would never do. I searched on several forums for a sensible answer and most ask to replace the drive letter (doesn't) or drive errors to be fixed (it works perfectly on the laptop Win 7 it is not damaged). I also removed the disc from its case and connected directly to the motherboard machine Win 8 SATA in the same arrangement as the drive HARD internal (happens exactly the same when it is inside the casev - 1 t RAW drive and apply please format). I have also connected to USB2 on both machines with the same result (works perfectly - but slower - on portable Win 7, 1 t RAW disk on desktop win 8). I also updated the BIOS for the motherboard to win 8. Basically, I'm out of options. Any reasonable suggestion beyond those listed will be greatly appreciated. Suggestions that involve the backup drive (towards a new - that is what I am trying to avoid), format and start again will not be seen in a good light. I guess that there is a sensible way for a drive that works perfectly on Windows 7 to be visible on a winning machine 8 without losing any data.

Is it possible that the WD drive has installed some type of automatic backup software that is required to read it? Some Seagate external drives do this...
