Why my system windows xp home does not recognize my drive external western digital hard?

When I plug the external hard drive Western Digital 500 GB on the USB port, I get a message that the device is not recognized. When I contacted the manufacturer of the external hard drive their tech support had me try the device on another computer and it worked fine. They suggested that I needed to fix my version of Windows XP. I don't want to reinstall the OS I'm losing all files and data. What should I do?

See if any the following assistance:

In the future, please start your own thread.  It does not appear that your problem has much in common with that of the previous, other than you poster, both have a problem with an external drive.

Open disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK)
Your portable player should be shown here (probably as "disk 1" in the lower pane)

If the disk space presents itself as "Not allocated" (as in the figure above), right-click and select "New Partition".  During the operation of the wizard, you assign a drive letter.  I suggest that your format using NTFS.  Once the disk has been partitioned, formatted, and has a drive letter, it should show in my computer.

If the drive is already partitioned and formatted, see if you can assign a drive letter to right-clicked on.

  • Why has my Windows 7 Home ceased to recognize the Fat32 drives?

Until a few months ago, my Windows 7 Home had no problem reading disks formatted FAT32, including my HTC Incredible phone. But now he wants to just get myself in shape every time that I connect them via USB. The same readers are very well read by my laptop Windows 7 Starter and a Windows XP computer. I even tried connecting to a Windows 7 computer to work, and he wants to format the drive as well. I was installing a bad update or it will be a fix soon?

    Thank you.

  • CD/DVD does not recognize the drive.

CD/DVD does not recognize the drive.  Error message-"Insert a disk." "" "Insert a disk in the drive (E or F, depending on whether one in use).  I bought a DVD/CD thought exteranl today that might work.  Same error message with the external dvd/cd.  Can hear the disc turning when it is inserted during a short period of time, maybe 20 seconds, then it stops.  Sometimes, the disc is ejected when the error message appears, sometimes not.  Same results even with blank CDs.

    Hello

Step 1: Please do all the same underneath if you did some before as is often total
a process that solves the problem.

Try this - Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click on the device - driver tab.
Click on update drivers (this will probably do nothing) - RIGHT click ON the drive - uninstall.
RESTART this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if the reader does not appear to continue
    below.

Then, work your way through these - don't forget the drive might be bad, could be a coward
cable or slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then make sure that the cables in both

Some DVD players do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the manufacturer of system and

    ===============================

Step 2: You have disc problems as the CD/DVD is actually 4 discs in 1 case (CD & DVD
Burn and CD and DVD read). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 operational so that other parts
    do it right.
