Windows 8.1 hangs in Windows Update, trying to get the driver

(I posted this query on another Forum HP. A person named Waterboy71 who claims to be working "on behalf of" HP suggested that I post here for a wider exposure.) We have added a Surface Pro 3 64 bit 8.1 running win to our home network.  Our Office XP WHAT features of an HP LaserJet 1200 printer is connected via USB and it is shared. Our laptop running XP has no problem to the 1200 LaseJet impression. On the Surface when you try to add the printer Win 8.1 concludes the LaserJet 1200 and calls Windows Update, probably to download a 64-bit printer driver. Windows Update crashes, it is short and does not stop. We have let it run for about an hour before the end of. I looked on the HP site for the drivers and it seems to imply that Windows Update is the right way to get the driver, that we need. Is there another way to do this? Or y at - it a way to get the update can I work correctly?

Here's what works in windows 7 and will probably work in windows 8. You need to load the printer on windows 8 machine as a local printer by saying it is connected to the lpt1 port and disable auto-detection. Just follow the prompts and when you get to the page of manufacturers choose hp on the left, then the lj1200 or universal pcl printer driver on the right. Finish the load and do not print a test page. Now, you will need to know the name of the computer that the printer is connected and it will also need the name of the share allocated to the printer on this computer. For these instructions I will use the name of the computer as xpmachine and the sharehane as lj1200. You will replace your real names. Now right click on the printer icon in devices and printers, then highlight the first properties and left click. Now, click ports, and then add the port. In the box that appears, type the following: \\xpmachine\lj1200 where you will replace your names. Save and apply and you will now be able to print to the printer.

  • Windows Update failed. Get the error code 646.

I am trying to install windows updates.  Service pack updates and Office (15 updates total office).  Updates download and go through the installation process.  But I got an error code (646) until the installation is complete.  I even tried to install updates at the time and still the same results.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled ofice.  Still a no go.  Help someone who has an answer.  It's really frustrating.

OK... I had the same problem with the download of the 2007 Microsoft security updates. When I tried to install updates, I receive error 646. I finally solved my problem by going to the Download Center on Microsoft and I install manually.

Here are the steps that I took... which I think should work:

    (1) go to the Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx
    (2) look for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB974234)
    3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run. I think you have to accept an agreement, then click on continue or OK
    4) repeat for all downloads that you can not install
    (5) run Microsoft Update new and click search the updates and if updates have been installed successfully, they should no longer appear in the updates that must be installed.

I don't know if it is not relevant or if it helped me succeed to install updates manually, but before I manually installed my updates I followed the instructions David_O posted here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/f3390e74-9961-4aae-8a05-554c1a9cf1a2 . I suggest that first of all try to download manually by following my directions. If it does not, then it's a possibility instructions of David resolved an issue that allowed me to download them manually disable Microsoft downloads site.

I can't believe all the research and the suggestions of the technicians did not work... sometimes your own research is the best!

I hope this helps! Good luck!

  • Can not install windows update to KB2656362 get the error code 880070490. Run fix, but it has not fixed the problem.

    Can not fix with fixit.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-AU/Windows-Vista/Windows-Update-error-80070490

If you receive the Windows Update 80070490 error, it means that a file (CBS Manifest) that is needed to install updates is corrupt. To correct this problem, you will need repair Windows. Repair Windows will not damage your personal files or the programs that are installed on your computer.

The System Update Readiness Tool for Windows can correct some conditions that cause Windows Update 80070490 error. You can access and run this tool by reading this Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Web site.

If the system update readiness tool solves the problem, you will need repair Windows.

Of course a repair installation will not solve the problem if it is due to an infection of virus/malware etc.

I followed all the instructions on the site of HP and windows will not find and install the driver for my HP 6540. How to make Windows do what should or is there a reliable place to download the driver from?

There is a driver recommended relatively complete for the Deskjet 6540 written by HP and Microsoft via Windows Update.  If the automatic install does not work, perform the following steps: connect the printer by USB.  Click Start, devices and printers, adding a printer, select the appropriate port and when the list of printers, click Windows Update in the lower right part of the dialog box.  It will take a few minutes for the update to complete, once that he choose the Deskjet HP (Hewlett-Packard no) 6500 Series.

If for some reason you can't use the driver provided through Windows Update, you can download the driver from the Windows Catalog site.  The Windows Catalog site requires the use of Internet Explorer.  For the Dsekjet 6500 Series there are three drivers listed.  11.4 Mo is the x 86 32-bit driver.  11.6 Mb file is x 64 64 bit version.  13.9 MB file is the least common architecture IA64.

    Hi Happyrockgeek,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 answers Forum!

This problem occurs if the Windows security .dll files are incorrectly registered.

To resolve this problem, you can perform the two methods of troubleshooting, check if the problem is resolved.
    Method 1:
Run (Checksur.exe) system update readiness tool.
To do this, follow these steps:
    1. download and run the system update readiness tool. This tool runs an ad hoc analysis of inconsistencies that might prevent future maintenance operations. For more information about how to download and run the Checksur.exe tool, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    http://support.Microsoft.com/default.aspx/KB/947821
    2. try to install the updates again.

    Methods 2.
    Reset the Windows Update components.
    1. to reset the Windows Update components automatically, click the fix button in the link below.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/971058
    2. click run in the file download dialog box and follow the steps described in the fix it Wizard.

I also suggest you to install the latest version of Windows Installer 4.5.
Follow the link below to download:
    http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en
and you can also try to install after you turn off the firewall.

    It will be useful.

  • My windows update will not install the new version of windows update, I get the error code 80070020 on a 64-bit vista SP2

My windows update to install a new version of windows update says it acts like it will download and install it then gives me the error code 80070020 and says that my computer is unable to download or install new updates or new version of the windows update. I have a 64-bit windows vista SP2 and my avira antivirus program that has a real-time protection. I tried to do a clean boot upward and tried every possible tip I found on the Microsoft and through suggested methods help panel, I found. My computer has Avira Antivirus that has real time protection I deleted and tried without that somewhere because he said it could be antivirus programs that include real-time protection. Does anyone have advice good?

    Hello

    1. What are the troubleshooting steps correct you did to fix the problem?

2 did you a recent software or changes to the material on the computer?

I would say allowing you to run the FIXIT from the link provided and check if it helps.

You receive error 0 x 80070020 when you use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site to install the updates

You can also try the manual steps and check.

If you follow the manual steps to start the computer in a clean boot state, remember to start the computer in normal mode after you have completed troubleshooting.

Note: when you are finished troubleshooting, follow step 7, mentioned in the article to start the computer to a normal startup.

Note: It is possible that some data could be removed if infections are detected.

Hope this helps and keep us posted.
