Windows 8: Disable media sharing completely

My music is served off my Qnap NAS via Twonky Media Server.

So I have to share anything from any of my machines to Windows 8.

Yet all my DNLA receivers (Noxon Audio, audio/video receiver, BD player...) are "polluted" by as many servers as there are has user accounts on Windows 8 machines under tension: if I turn on just my laptop and tablet, I have no less than 8 useless media servers and this can get worse!

Beside that, on battery-powered devices, this probably causes excessive battery drain.

A completely disabling Windows 8 media-sharingsystem for all users?

Go to the-->--> Service Administrative Tools Control Panel.

Look for the network of the Player Windows Media Sharing Service. Stop and disable.

I have two computers, one running Vista Home, the other running Vista professional.  Vista Home computer is connected to my stereo and has no media stored directly on it.  I can turn on media sharing to it will work perfectly, but then after about twenty minutes, it will stop.  The computer is always connected to the network, can still see the other computer, and if I disable media sharing, and then turn it back on, it will be fine.  I tried to find an explanation, but I can't.

I have a laptop, too, and it can connect to the computer Vista Pro without problems or interruptions.  The Vista Pro computer can play media off of my computer Vista Home (I put some there to test) without interruption.  The laptop and the Vista Home computer, connect to my wireless network, Vista Pro is connected using a wired connection.

As well as a few other people here, I got the above message trying to connect for sharing (with my Sony Bravia TV) media. This is the first time I tried to use the media sharing.
I went through the under process, but at step 4. There is no file [security]. I can't use system restore. It could have been this way for years!
    All solutions?
    Thank you
    1. ClickStart.
2 Typeregedit in the search box and press ENTER.
    3. Locate the subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\HME\ [security ID]. The text of the name of the folder security ID is long, consisting of alphanumeric characters that are broken upwards with dashes.
    4. right click the [security ID] folder, and then clickPermissions.
    5. confirm that your user account is listed as the owner of this subkey under anti-terrorism tab. If your account name is not listed, click and add it to the list of owners. You must be logged on as administrator or member of the administrator group to complete this step.

    Hello

    Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, if [security ID] folder is not present, then you can go ahead and create a new one. To do this, follow these steps:

    a. navigate to the location:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\HME

    b. right-click on HME, point to new and select the key

    c. This will create a new [security ID] folder

Now, perform the other steps mentioned in my previous post.

Please come back for any clarification on this or any issue of Windows. We will be happy to help you.

  • Network of Windows media sharing service player does not start - Vista and PS3

I am running Vista 32 bit Home Premium and trying to share my media to DLNA on my PS3 PC using Windows Media Sharing Service. UPnP is enabled. Network discovery is turned on. File sharing is enabled. Media sharing is turned on.

Whenever I visit Windows Media Player or try to change the setting of sharing media in network and sharing Center, there is the error message "media sharing is currently disabled, either because the sharing service is not running or your firewall settings have changed. To restart sharing, you must first confirm your settings.

During the deactivation and reactivation of sharing multimedia files, I never see PS3 on the list (not a single unknown device appears). Also I see no Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service on the list of Services - there is no way to toggle the service or do start automatically.

There are several user accounts on this PC and I made the changes on my admin account.

Tried a 3rd party software Java "PS3 Media Server" and makes my Vista computer show on PS3 without parameters or modifications to firewall. This suggests that the WIFI, router, network discovery and UPnP work. I prefer to use Windows services if I would only get their work.

  • Windows 7 recovery media is unable to complete the installation

I have had a total hard drive on my HP Pavilion DV6-3108EA failure and got the relevant HP recovery media and install a spare drive compatible plug - in this case, it's a Samsung SSD 850 EVO, 500 GB solid state of direct replacement for the deceased Samsung 500 GB disk drive. Drive diagnostic confirms that the replacement drive is fully functional without error.

The recovery kit comes with 3 DVDs. tightening of the bolts 1 and 2 are the Windows 7 recovery media and #3 is the recovery of applications and drivers. 1 recovery attempt has done OK, loaded all three DVD but eventually stuck at a screen "loading devices (40%). ", which would not go further even after a night's sleep. Therefore, power off, and...

Attempt 2 is better. I jumped 3 DVD and the construction seems to be almost complete but finally stopped with hearwarming message that "Windows cannot complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer restart the installation"frustrating, I think you'll agree.

Out of curiosity I tried ctrl-alt-del what task manager open nicely and from there I was able to do many things including use setup to reconnect to my wireless router, enter the number of license Win 7 OK and activate windows, get the right keyboard configuration and launch a copy of IE8 with which I am still typing this message.

It seems so I have a PC almost fully functional except that Windows could not complete the installation and if I click the OK button in the offending dialog box, it restarts and returns to the same dialog box. Very frustrating. Oh and there is no button start / menu start so clearly there are always things to be completed.

The recovery media is "System Recovery Kit for portable Pavilion or Presario" (COL35379_631054_031) for which I paid £35,12 and expect to deliver the goods. But it doesn't work. Also remarkable is that the recovery media did not build a D: partition of recovery disk, contrary to what he says. Can anyone help?

It's frustrating. Fortunately, I can also access this forum and this email addressfrom my Android Tablet and check there return from time to time. Really appreciate your ideas and help here.

Either by the way, on a different thread, I read the assertion that HP requires to change a chip on the motherboard when you change a drive. This disc is loaded with tools and Windows software and saving the configuration changes as my wireless network details I don't buy that one. Thanks for reading this far.

Hoping for wise leaders to help me move forward.

    With regard to Al

So close and yet so far.

But I would like to clear one thing up to HP support were excellent - good focus on my ideas of the problem and a commitment to see it through.  No worries about to buy me the hot spare elsewhere.  Problem still not solved, but I'm more forward with other ideas to pursue.  I was told to reset the BIOS date to 2012 (don't know what difference that would make but there) and the construction has progressed much further this time.

More anon, but had to post a message praising the support that I received today.

    Result!

Fixing the date of the BIOS to 2012 has allowed the recovery to go much further, but still have up to a point where he had failed.  So, why?

Silly me!  Should have read the instructions on the screen and their follow-up religiously.  Eventually, the restore process (which takes a lot of time) begins to re - install applications and other things.  The message on the screen at the beginning of this process very clearly said that it will automatically reboot several times.  However, being a little too eager to get there, I finally saw a message that said that such and such an application requires a restart to complete the installation and stupidly I clicked the button restart now.  Who killed for the rest of the installation.  Finally I have sussed out - and kept following reconstruction my itchy fingers away from the mouse to the manuscript to rebuild whole had been terminated, making his own restarts suff and hey hop... a PC entirely restored with a nice new Samsung SSD drive.

As an aside, if you plan to replace your hard drive (defective or not) with a Samsung SSD tested loading the Wizard software that comes with it to optimize the OS to SSD hardware.  It optimizes the things like the prefetcher and Super-fetch to the machine and the drive to work more effectively together - very impressive.

Kudos to HP who were great support.  I know that some people say thay have bad experiences.  Mine here in the United Kingdom was outstanding.  The guy listened, asked good questions, gave good advice and has been a pleasure to work with - what would you like... oh yes, his advice worked!

Thanks to HP real home to my little crisis.

A lot of work to do now to recover data, backups (yes I) and re - install a large number of tools that I use, but all disks are there and it's just a matter of time now.

    All the best

    Original title: "skins".
I recently downloaded a lot of skins from the microsoft Web site, and it worked very well for about an hour. Then I saw a skin called 'come back' I don't not download but recalled seeing in my default skins that were already installed. I wanted to see what it was and when I did caused a problem which I can't specify because the notification window remained only until fairly long for me to see (in a nutshell) "unknown problem caused media player to close and to protect my Media Player Windows has disabled skins. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic and I can't find a way to reactivate my skin so that I can use only skins working know is the company and changing the skin that caused the problem. I tried deleting and reinstalling all the skins again, but again does not help. I tried to do a right click on the skin to go to properties to activate as suggested in the forums, but when I right click on it nothing happens. So now I have like 20 downloaded skins but the only way that they work is if I download again and choose to view them, but if I try to change the playlist or switch to full mode then it goes to firm skin and I download it again to get the one I want. • PS3 media sharing with windows 7

OK, I've seen some quesitons on threads with the PS3 does not share is not with vista.

I have recently upgraded to windows 7. Before I upgraded I was using windows vista home. I had not a single problem getting my PS3 to share then. Once I upgraded my system to windows 7, I can't have the media sharing to work.

Is it because the PS3 doesn't have an option to connect to the homegroup yet?

I see in the media sharing devices, if I selet "all the networks" it will come as an unknown device. If there is a way to get windows 7 to recognize the PS3 as a media valid and peripheral network share please let me know.

    Hello wand,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft Ansers forum! You should be able to take the following steps to enable the media to share between your PS3 and your Windows 7 operating system:

Go to Control Panel > network and sharing Center > advance change sharing settings

Then you must make sure that:

    - Network discovery is on
    - Printer & file sharing is turned on

After that, click on media streaming options

In the bar of menu display devices , select all networks

You should see some unknown devices/peripherals.

Double click on each unknown device to see the MAC address of the device

Find the device that corresponds to the MAC address of your PS3 and allow this multimedia sharing device

    Hope this helps J

  • WMP-11 / WinXP Media Sharing error - HELP!

Two PC, both with WinXP SP3 Home on them.  A desk, a pro audio (& much faster).  But the sharing of multimedia files from WMP - 11 does NOT work on the faster Pro-Audio PC; It hangs for about 45 seconds when the box is checked, then recovers, but shows NO results to select from.  It will do this several times.  There is also a NEW unit of Panasonic Blu - ray wireless streaming and a pioneer of the NEW network 7.1 surround receiver on the network.  The 'desktop' PC sees the BD & receiver & allows them to be selected in the sharing of multimedia files.  The BD player sees the network and can ONLY play files (jpg & mp3 only, dammit) to the Office PC, but will NOT be connected to or see the Pro-audio PC either.  The Pioneer receiver does NOT show it sees PC EITHER although it should and still iTunes on the PC Pro-Audio sees the receiver AND my sound card (MOTU Traveler Mk3) pro and will play to / thru either (yay iTunes, WMP-11 Boo)!

OK, Yes, the system is a bit complex, but quite impressive with a projected screen of 92 "w X 52" h. also. "  I tried following instructions to automate & and/or start Win connected services / nobody to charge on wmpnetwk.exe (of WMP Network Media Sharing (EXE), but nothing.  I even completely removed & reinstalled all MS .net Framework (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0), but am always errors using MS-implementation to date for new installations.  I'm really starting to think this life Techno is complete rubbish, and I need to ' drop the electronic device and just leave quickly. "  Too bad I'm thousands of $$ in it, and have a lot of hours-life lost to it already.  No matter what other geniuses out there who can tell me how to solve this mess?

Well to set up WMP sharing open WMP, tools, options, Library tab, tap on the

the button "configure sharing" & edit. Also, look in the devices tab, L.click on the

material, press the tab properties & edit...

WMP is a utility called "WMDiag.

Download this from microsoft, it tests WMP

In addition, removing & reinstalling the software such as .NET can / will cause major BONE

    problems...

WMDiag creates several large reports, which none did tell ME what it is.  I'm not a programmer.  You don't mention where to send these reports to be decifered for help.  Difficulty of MS it don't find problems or correct them, and in the last two tests, he reported that he "encountered an error & could not continue", sending me to a non-specific solve this site (I've had NO idea where to go from there).  A large PART of my experience of MS's tail-chasing and dead ends.  The team of Bill Gates should start again with a SIMPLE operating system that will work with all existing software (too simplified, but a good idea).

In the end, I spent 4 days of eight hours, trying to solve these problems: not .net Framework package would update via MS up-to-date and sharing the media would HANG about 25 seconds when trying to put on the March (then would produce NO result).  Most of this time was looking, trying some different procedures suggested on the ballots of Ms.  It was excrutiating and a gigantic waste of time.  It could have been resolved in an hour, was easy to find... good info but it really wasn't.  Too many paths, & many people having the same problem.

Finally, with the help of .net cleanup tool and other processes long regsvr32.exe command line, I was able to fix the Windows Update system files, reinstall all .net Framework 1.1 to 4.0 and incredibly stupid boring packages, finally got each update offered by MSUpdate installed.  Curiously and fortunately, which also fixed the problem of sharing of media files.  WMP - 11 now allows sharing and recognizes the wireless Panasonic BD-streaming player AND pioneer in network receiver/amp.

Since MS Answers seems exclusively designed for people with problems MUCH more simple (like how to follow instructions), where should we do when they have REAL problems in the system that NEED to be repaired as soon as POSSIBLE so normal work can continue?  I've always been very frustrated with the interface 'Help & Support' offered in the start - menu, it has generally been quite worthless (Googling is preferable).  This .net of all penalty framework update that many know should have been handled by MS much more quickly & efficiently.

There are many more, but I'll leave it at that since I have fixed my problem. -DMS
