  I was recently asked to repair my brother DELL laptop.  The HARD drive failed and the system unusable.  I replaced the HARD drive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium x 64 (earlier version of windows) from my own installation media.  The recovery partition had survived the failure of HARD drive, I would have just cloned that and used, but this was not an option in this case.

  The problem that I am experiencing, is that windows don't will not activate, saying that the key is not valid.  I was told that installing Windows 7 media would work with a retail or an OEM key, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  The key OEM I use, is from the computer it came from originally, and the only material change is the new HARD disk.

  I try to avoid ordering an OEM Dell installation CD, as which costs money (I already have my own installation CD) and takes time (why do they have them available for download?).

  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I did a new install of Windows 8 and have a few records that I stored stuff I now want to use it as well with Windows 8.  As with the other threads, I was getting access denied error etc and have not defined administrators group/full control permissions, but I still couldn't access readers, and my connection is type administrators.

  If you know that you are a member of the ADMINISTRATORS group, then just browse the classic desktop and open Windows EXPLORER (WINDOWS KEY + E). Right CLICK on the C DRIVE, and then choose PROPERTIES. Click the SECURITY TAB, and then click the entry of ADMINISTRATORS (computername\administrators).   Sometimes I am able to make the global switch seem to be on. It won't even activate the directional blur or frame the mixture.

  I'll answer my own question. Global switches actually work. The separate black boxes that indicate when the global switches are on have been removed and replaced by a light blue outline of the icon of the switch.

  Check that your antivirus (all-in-one suite If you have one) is not turn off your network traffic.

  Note the devices installed in the machine.  Use this information to download the latest version of the drivers and software for the manufacturer's Web site features (on another machine and store on an external support, I suppose, would be the only way for you to do.)

  Uninstall the software/drivers for network devices.  Turn it back on.  Even if pilots are found/installed automatically, manually update the drivers & software using the files you downloaded earlier.

  Download, install, execute, update and perform analyses complete system with the two following applications:

  • MalwareBytes (FREE)
  • SuperAntiSpyware (FREE)

  Remove anything they find.  Reboot when necessary.  (You can uninstall one or both when finished.)

  You can't say the product key.  If you use an Installation of Vista genuine disc it will install its own version to know the product key when you are prompted to enter (all versions of the same size of the bit are included on the authentic disc).

  Hey! Thanks for your help, but I had refreshed my windows 8 in the meantime and connected to the internet after that. and then when I followed your instructions and run slui.exe, it says that windows is activated. so I guess that the problem is solved.
