    Hello drjoe_anzaldua,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft Answers forum.

Usually the "Windows is unable to Check For Updates" error message produced always of the blocker window update connection attempt.

    1. first of all, please check that there is no any third-party firewall preventing Windows Update to communicate with "update.microsoft.com.

    2. check if Windows Firewall is blocking the update of Windows.

Please see the following article for connection errors:

836941. you may encounter temporary connection errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

  • Error "Windows cannot check for updates because the service is not running.

I am using windows vista 64-bit ServicePack two on my laptop. I recently had to install new hard disks. Since then, Windows update does not work. When I check the updates dialog box appears indicating that Windows cannot check the updates because the service is not running. I used the Microsoft fix - it tool, and it recognizes that there is a problem, but cannot fix. History of the update is completely empty. I would appreciate any ideas on how to solve this problem.

    Please read this article:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2730071/en-us

Another suggestion is maybe disable the updates of Windows

    Reset.

    Activate the Windows updates.

    Try again. (Worked for some)

I tried some of the recommendations varied on this site, but so far without success.

If I just wipe my computer, and then start reinstalling everything from below upwards, will that solve the problem?  I know it sounds drastic, but I'm willing to do, and hopefully learn something in the process.

I'm not computer specific read and write... so it would take me hours, wading through all the different corrections before as I find one that works.  That's why I'm considering a reformat.

I checked for malware and repeatedly tried to system update readiness tool.

    Robear fantastic job!

Done all the steps above except 8A and everything went well.

    KB3175443, KB3178034, KB3177725, KB3167679 all found and installed OK.

Thanks much Robear for your skill and persistence.

You are welcome & thank you for your comments. Mark one or more of my previous posts as RESPONSE will officially close your thread (if you care about things).

PS: I wouldn't vote USEFUL or two while you're there either.

These remnants of Norton seem to wreak havoc with Windows, so is there anything I can do, apart from [another application], change to avoid this problem in the future...?

If you want to stick with Norton, never ever upgrade to the new version (for example, from Norton 360 Norton 360 or Norton Security v23.x v23.x v22.x). Uninstall the current version, download/run a new copy of the removal of Norton & reboot tool and then do a clean install of the new version.

Or you can switch to another (paid or free) suite anti-virus/security applications (for example, free Microsoft Security Essentials - which will be supported at least until the Extended Support for Win7 ends January 14, 2020).

  • Error code Windows Update 80070490 and the message "Windows cannot check the updates.

Windows Update 80070490 error code appeared yesterday (21 September 2013) and the message "Windows cannot check for updates. I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit, Service Pack 2. I tried almost all the suggestions on the Internet (including on Microsoft Web page) on this way to solve this problem, including Microsoft fixed it, the update of the system, file Windows Update DIAGCAB Diagnostics tool and etc, but still getting the message. The last successful update was on 13.09.2013.  All updates done before and September 13 are written as a 'success' in the folder "Update history", but when I open the folder "Installed updates", I don't see anything and it says "no update are installed on this computer", which is strange, because at the moment, Windows Update was made automatically without any problem.   Please help me to solve the problem with this error code.

  • Cannot install Windows updates (Windows cannot check the updates)

I have 10 computers networked with a Windows SBS11 server as a domain controller. The 10 computers, 6 of them are Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) and the other 4 are Windows Vista Pro (32 bit). All computers stopped Vista download of updates ago and which gives an error, the message "Windows cannot check for updates. When you try to check for updates manually or automatically that the error is displayed, but it should not be any problem with the updates are downloaded and installed on Windows 7 computers.

    I tried the following:

    -Ran the system update tool.

-Execution of Malware Bytes and Vipre Antivirus analysis in safe mode. No infections found.

-Disabled the firewall and restarted the search.

-Reset the proxy server using the winhttp netsh from the command prompt.

    -Restarted Windows Update Services.

-Ensure that the BITS Service is running.

-GPO update for Windows updates not be configured on computers.

-Change Windows Update settings to allow the manual update. Allowed for the updates to install, but after computer restart returned to the old settings and error appeared.

If there are any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate.

    Hello Irfan,

Thanks again for your response. Since your last I discovered through my system status (Control Panel), I wrote that my product ID and the Windows 7 activation status not available. So I followed instuctions to help and microsoft support to activate.  Yet once, I got the error code D0000034 as before with the problem of update. However, I was given the opportunity to phone, but received no phone #. I bought the DVD of Windows 7 and installed on the PC that was custom built for me.  On the site Web microsoft help and support, I was asked for the product ID, which according to them is a # 20 numbers.  Not the only one, I have is the product key which is one 25-alpha-numeric.  I tried to enter only and does not pass.  This is why I say that I can pay for help since I did not ' have the product ID.  Maybe it isn't your area of expertise, Irfan, but I was hoping... I re - install windows on last April when I got in trouble and probably did not re - activate? What do you think?  If you can get back on track, I would be very grateful and thank you once again to be a big help!

Please ignore above request. I have since re-activated Windows and the problem was solved with technical assistance telephone and thank you again for your help, Irfan. Also thanks to all the people answering the phone at microsoft. The experience I had was really a pleasure. I wasn't expecting such an attitude courteous and professional.

  • Windows cannot check the updates - C800044E error code

    Hello

Since yesterday, I get a notification icon in the taskbar indicating that windows cannot check the updates. If I click on the icon and then click on the button "check for updates" in the new window, the search end reports that an error has occurred and the error code is C800044E. This happens every time after the computer starts and when I try to manually check for updates.

The operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit with OEM license.

I already googled for this error code, but none of the suggestions found during the search worked. Mode by default with no results, I installed the MicrosoftFixit50202 (have not tried yet aggressive mode). I ran the malware Microsoft Windows (without threats found) removal tool. I downloaded and installed manually the KB947821 update for vista, also without results.

The last successful update is dated more than a month previously, and I assume that at the same time, some important updates may appear. Can someone help me with this problem?

I've already solved the problem by using the system restore (I used a restore enjoyed a week point).

I'll answer your questions anyway, in which case this may help solve one similar problem to others:

    1 Vista SP2 (all updates important/critical installed as of October 1, 2010)

    2. Eset NOD32 antivirus/antispyware with current subscription. No third-party firewall (just the windows firewall).

3-4. I have never installed a Norton or McAfee application on this computer, but I'm not sure if a trial version of Norton AV is pre-installed with this computer (if it did, I removed it when I originally set up the computer - almost 3 years ago).
