Windows media player 11 on downloaded videos error "cannot read drive file does not support the file type or does not take in charge the codec used to compress the file.

  • now that the full version of k'lite seems to stop what is happening why hasent windows incorporated something similar in the windows media player 11, or they have another type of codec full, we can use to make this.only so many people have the same problem .please can help you.

Hi bbdunford,

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file.

You may encounter this error message for the following reasons:

(a) the file type is supported by the drive, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the player.

(b) the file might have been encoded with a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player. If this is the case, Windows Media Player cannot play the file.

Windows media player will play only the files and videos only if it supports this type of file.

Method 1

Check if the video file format is supported by Windows media player using the link below.

Information on the types of media files that supports Windows Media Player

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/316992

If the files are not supported by Windows media player, then you will need to use a few players from third party that supports this file format.

Method 2

See the link below for more information on the codec.

Can someone please?  I go crazy - my windows media player will not play anything except the sound on videos (films are so far the problem).  She claims codecs are updated automatically, I'm too scared to download some unknown codec. I WILL RESPECT ALL THE SOLUTIONS YOU HAVE TO OFFER!  From what I can tell, they are my videos (movies) transferred from the cd to the media player.  Videos of "sample" provided pre work ok.  My films all have the extension .avi at the end, that's why I don't understand why they will play only the sound of the film, not the actual Visual part. . AVI should be accompanied by my windows media player.  As I said, I'm pretty decent to deal with such things as a result of working with a lot of "technicians" in recent years; This is why I do not bother anyone here, but I am at a loss for what to do. If it's codecs, I don't want to take the risk to download a bad codec and corrupting my system.  Already checked the updates of Media player, there are not available at this time.  She has also set to automatically download codecs.  Man, it drives me crazy!  ConfusedOne70 aka Michelle

I am trying to burn a dvd on windows media player movie, but all I get is a desktop file burned on the dvd and that's all what he'll do it just ejects and the session is over

    Hi Barbara,

You can use the player to burn a mixture of songs from the library of the drive or your computer to an audio CD, after which you can play the CD in any standard CD player. Alternatively, you can burn files on CD and DVD data. It is not possible to burn the live streams, such as radio stations, on a CD or a DVD.

  • Windows Media Player - no audio during video playback

    Windows media player

I am running Windows XP.  Windows Media Player opens successfully, I have audio but not video.  I tried to reinstall, update etc.  Still nothing.

    Hi jeffwebs,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

2 when was the last time it was working fine?

    3. you receive an error message during playback of video files?

    4. What if the problem occurs with all video files read using Windows media player?

It is likely that the codec is correct / encoder is not installed or is installed but has been corrupted by another program.

A codec is a software to compress or decompress a digital media file, such as a song or a video. Windows Media Player and other programs use codecs to play and create digital media files.

A codec can consist of two components: an encoder and a decoder. The encoder performs the compression function (coding) and the decoder performs the decompression function (decoding). Some codecs include both components and some codecs only one of them.

Follow the steps listed in the section below to download codecs for this problem.

You receive a codec error message or play audio but video does not play when you play media files in Windows Media Player 11

    1. Windows Media Player 10 has opened a photo successfully dvd but a message "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close" came on the screen several times.  Had to re insert the dvd picture, but it would open again each time.
    2. Tried the cd drivers and troubleshooting dvd and was informed of my dvd could not be played because there was no decoder for dvd.  Following instructions and chose a windows xp approved decoder pack download - dvd has chosen the Roxio CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack.
    3. Then upgraded the media player to Windows Media Player 11.
    4. After that, dvd and cd rom could be opened by the media player 11, but neither the DVD or cd ROM readers would recognize the photo DVD in question had been inserted into one of these discs, and even less to be opened by the media player.
    5. Program scanner and photo used to transfer my photos printed digitally on a dvd are trademarks of Hewlett-Packard.  Contact the center of the photo, but they could not provide me with any guidance or even particular HP photo program they used to create the dvd picture.  I remember the photos were stored on the dvd in JPEG format picture and was able to open by Windows Explorer before I've updated since WMP 10-11.

"" I remember well, the pictures are stored on the dvd in JPEG format picture and was able to open by Windows Explorer before I've updated since WMP 10-11 ""

Looks like you have a data dvd, which has just the pictures on it and it will not be seen by WMP, who needs a dvd-video disc.

It should always open in windows Explorer and you should be able to see your pictues it.

  • WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 HAS NO VIDEO BUT SOUND

I downloaded and paid for the codec suggested Microsoft. Updated my Nvidia video card and it installed firefox plugin for WMP.  I can't get a video image, but get the sound when you try to play a dvd or the downloaded video. Not sure what to try next? Should I just remove WMp 11 and redownload it? Suggetions?

    Hi CLB43,

Generally, this problem should be solved by installing the video codec. In my view, re - install the video codec should solve the problem.

Also, make sure the file format you are trying to play if it is supported by WMP11 or not.

  • How can I block Windows media player-all function or video?

OK, I have one of four newspapers-ons in my pc that is locked down pretty tight where the only thing I want to work is word processor (WordPerfect and starting Word version).  My teenage son has impulse control issues, which gives more access means that it is wandering and not on the task.  Theoretically, he likes to play music while working on school assignments (writing) on the computer.  The problem is that apparently in addition to the execution of music files already resident on our pc and external drive, he inserted DVD in the dvd player and movies run (secretly) that are played to use the features of Windows media player.  My preference would be to hell video functionality or the ability to use the DVD drive under this opening of session and leave the ability of audio file.  Is there a way to do this?

Alternatively, if I install another drive, can I block the video features of a different player and block the drive windows completely?

    Hi Akphoneguy,

We understand that you want to restrict your teenager using Windows Media Player to play the video file but without impact on music files. However, the feature that you are curious about is currently not available in Family Safety. It can only restrict the entire working application and not a specific feature within the application.
