    When you try to defragment my laptop then lets me do.  What should I do? had no idea about computers, so please do your lol simple answers

    The System File Checker will help you and you do not have to describe the symptoms consistent with a need to run SFC.

    However, it will be wasting your time and frustrate you immensely unless you have a XP installation CD bootable authentic with the same Service Pack as your Service Pack installed.  You won't be loling at this topic.

    If running chkdsk/r is not clear, then I guess that the Restore Point is somehow plagued and that this one is afflicted, there may be others who are afflicted.

    Whenever an RP starts to seem suspicious, I suspect all the Restore Points as being dubious, so I would simply delete everything (except the last one), create a new restore manually Point, reboot and then immediately restore the system to the restore point, you just do it manually.

    Who will test the restoration process of the system from one end to the other.

    The day of your thinking you need to work the system restore is not the day for know it's broken.

    If you run chkdsk /r and answer in the affirmative to run at the next reboot, you're unlikely to be able to see the report of chkdsk, since it will be only on the screen very briefly.   I'm not sure that counts as a view state report because you won't be able to read quite quickly.   You won't know if there is a problem or not, or what the chkdsk /r found to do.

    If you care to see the result of the chkdsk command, you must do this:

    When chkdsk runs automatically restart either because XP thinks he needs to (perhaps your NTFS volume has been marked as dirty) or you decide to schedule the chkdsk with error correction during the next reboot, the results appear in the viewing Application event log.  You should look there for the chkdsk log to see what happened and no problems after running chkdsk.

    To view the logs in Event Viewer, click Start, settings, Control Panel, administrative tools, event viewer.

    A shortcut to the event viewer is to click on start, run and enter in the box:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc

    Click OK to launch the event viewer.

    Search the Application log for an event originally by Winlogon, something like:

    This is usually caused by a corrupt media library. To reset the library, follow the instructions for WMP 11 on XP at http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary. Note the reset of the library will make you lose all the counts to play and possibly ratings too.

  • Windows error message "cannot find the file K:\$MFT or K:\System Volume Information.

    Original title: Windows Error Message.  Cannot locate the file K:\$MFT

    Periodically, I get an error message stating that Windows cannot locate the file K:\$MFT or K:\System Volume Information.   In this case my computer loses contact with K (my backup drive).  The only way I can get the command back up and running is to shut it down, restart windows and then reconnect the drive.  I have absolutely no idea where, why, or what this message is not irritating and a nuisance.  How can I stop this?

    My problem is back and I guess that I does not after all.  It was suggested that more info on my system could help find answers.  I am running Windows XP. SP3.  My HD is 500 GB.  Intel Core 2 CPU.  6600 GHZ, 3 GB of Ram.

    In addition the cannot locate the message file, it sometimes indicates that a "delayed write failed" and I should save the K:\$MFT file also.

    As far as I can tell, I have solved my problem.  Windows 'Restore' was trying to save my disk backup for future use, and I think it's whence came the message.  I changed the settings to restore now ignores my backup disk and the problem has not happened since.  I hope it's the end of it.

    Borrow a Microsoft Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc Recovery DVDs) to do a repair installation

    If you see a startup Neosmart repair disk download here, this is NOT what you want.

    You want a good Vista DVD that contains the operating system files.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you need a recovery media for your laptop back to factory settings, read this info:
    How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.
    There is no Vista free download legal available.
    Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.
    Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.

    See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.

    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...

    Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ask them if you can also make recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.
    They will tell you how to do this.
    Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
    A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
    The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.

    There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

    If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

    Yes, you can delete the system volume information data if not to use the system restore.

    From what you say, you are probably unable to start Windows.

    In this case, when you start the computer, keep tapping the key "F8" on the keyboard until the Advanced menu comes up. Then choose "Safe Mode".

    You will see something like your ordinary, here to enter office "chkdsk volume: /f" (replace with your hard drive volume, in most cases, it's 'c') at the command prompt.
