Windows Update Causes Massive screw-up system. Help!

Hello world!

I need help desperately. I use a HP Slimline desktop running Vista. I've recently updated (last Tuesday or more) using UPDATES AUTOMATIC - and my computer everything is SCREWED now.

Essentially - I installed the update as part of the shutdown process, as I normally would. But restart my computer, it gets regarding the screen before the log-in (when he has this loading bar bit and the rest of the screen is black). Momentarily, one of two things happens:

1. blue screen of death. The computer turns off, tells me to reboot and try to restart in Mode without failure.

2. Startup Repair launches. I ran the diagnostic tool, but it has not detected any problem.

So pretty much the problem is that WINDOWS WILL NOT BOOT. In the Startup Repair, it tells me there is no problem with anything - but it also TELLS me THAT SYSTEM RESTORE has BEEN STOP on my computer. I do not disable this feature!

I have all my files stored on my external hard drive - however, my computer does not recognize this drive. My wireless internet, which is usually given if my computer is turned on or not, also does not work.

I'm totally screwed? I mean, I've never used to before startup repair and it is confusing, mostly because I do not know why the system restore does not work. I CANNOT LAUNCH MODE without FAILURE or any other useful tips from Windows.

What can I do? Help, please.

the computer had McAfee installed as a trial when I bought it. Have since renewed - subscription is up to date, and no problems have been associated with him other than he identify some of my updates of windows as spyware.

1 applications McAfee (and Norton) are known to not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself. Even on the assumption that you have purchased a subscription before the free trial period has expired, there is a good chance that "remnants" of the trial caused the version purchased, renewed not to install and work properly.

2. the fact that the application of McAfee is supposed to be identify legitimate (assumed) updates to Windows as"spyware" is certainly the evidence to me that the application of McAfee was not "works" and therefore led to the infection of W32/Alureon rootkit you are dealing with now.

To be clear as possible, your problems are not due to the installed KB977165 itself, they are due the KB977165 have installed on an already infected computer. [1]

That being said, I wouldn't bother a support of opening incident now. Follow these steps, instead:

[You may want to print these instructions for offline viewing.]

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!

HOW to do a clean install of Vista: section "If you want to reinstall Windows Vista by running a new installation...". "of http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-Vista#section_3

Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) otherwise and before using a flash drive or the SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formatted:

NB: The McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free and download/run the removal tool from McAfee before installing updates, Windows Service Packs, or updates IE and before you reinstall your purchased version of McAfee Security Center [2].

  • Dell Optiplex 3020 - the black screen after dell logo (happened after windows updates froze at halfway and systems were restarted)

We had windows updates run on all our systems of windows 7 in our medical center.  13 or so of our 3020 s Optiplex froze for eight hours about in a State of "install updates 1 of 24".  I have all them turned off and restarted units.  Once units have been restarted, they gave the Security windows startup or start-up option normally.  Those who had selected the option to 'start normally' would display the logo dell at startup, then click on a completely black screen (all devices still in market and monitors recording an active signal even if no picture).   Those started in safe mode w/o networking, loaded in safe mode.  I rebooted the machine in safe mode, and they all started out in windows without problem.

For systems that go completely black after the dell logo.  I am able to F2 in the BIOS, I can run diagnostics from BIOS and I can't F12 in boot options, but I cannot F8 or SHIFT + F8 mode without failure or fact start in safe mode, please come under early start options.

Anyone happen to know a way to launch a system of 3020 optiplex in safe mode without the use of F8, SHIFT + F8, go through msconfig or remote access to the registry (because I can not remote in the system on the network)?

Maybe I can put the hard drive in a dock and change the registry in this way?  But can I change the potentiometer to force secure boot? or is it not possible to make a bcdedit to it as an external drive, install it in his camera and force it to safe boot the next time, he is running?

Any ideas or suggestions would be very appreciated.

  • Windows update caused catastrophic hdd failure?

I installed the update of windows the other day to return to find the catastrophic hard drive failure. I've never had problems with this computer before. I wonder if anyone has had similar problems. I lost a lot of work, the photos that I'm never going back.

Is it possible that windows update caused this hard drive failure?

    Hello

Windows updates won't cause failure catastrophic hdd. In addition, I would like to let you know that hard drives are mechanical devices with moving parts, so they are subject to wear and tear expected. It may possibly do not mechanically at a given time. However, most of the manufacturers branded their product with an average (usually supplied by total number of operating hours). But if a part is defective or there is some manufacturing defects, service life of the drive, a bit more in as little as a day.

Other factors are primarily external in nature. Mounted sudden power can cause a drive failure, as can cause fire or damage, as well as a number of computer viruses of water. Exposure to high levels of magnetism can disrupt the classic functions of a player, as well as net impacts. If dust gets in a car, it can become a catalyst for an eventual failure.

    Thank you.

I am currently running windows 7 Professional, and today an automatic update of windows has been installed on shutdown.  After reboot, I lost the aero glass look and it is replaced instead of greyish blue bars.  Using the system restore I can go back to glass, but as soon as the update installs again once he goes.  In any case to return the glass?

    Hello

Do your restore and then after reboot immediately do the following:

Configuration-Windows Updates - settings - updated Panel assigned to download but not install so that you can select
for install or click right on and HIDE as needed. Don't forget if you restore to before these values are set
Next, you need to put it back again. If you are sure that the question is clear, you can assign their automatic return.

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - Device Manager - Display Adapter - note the brand and complete model of your
video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now click on UPdate Driver (this
cannot do anything as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then do a right click - Uninstall - REBOOT
This will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party with their

Now go to the site of the manufacturer of system (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) (restoration) and then of the manufacturer of the device

updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - tab drivers version you install actually shows up. This
because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (particularly that audio drivers) so install a
pilot - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat if necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW on device at the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER - manually check by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

  • Windows Update causes internet connection to stop working

I installed the recommended Vista updates last night and this caused my internet connection, to stop working.  This has happened to both of my HP laptops.  I was able to work around this problem by going to a previous restore point but worry about future updates, causing the same problem.  Please notify.

    Hello

Use a wired connection to download the latest drivers or download on another computer
and transfer them to this one on removable media such as CD, DVD or USB drives.

Control Panel - device - networks - WiFi - Manager write down of the brand and model, and then double-click
on the drivers Tab - get the version number. Then double click on update drivers (this can do nothing
that MS is far behind the drivers of certification). Then make a right click on the device and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - it
    will update the driver stack.

Now, go to the system manufacturer and search for updated drivers, this will be your fallback. Then go to the Site of the manufacturer of the device
and look for the even more recent drivers.

Download - SAVE - go to where you put the driver - CLICK RIGHT to it - RUN AS ADMIN

  • Window update causing problems of printer driver

Hi, I have a laptop running XP and router wireless computer (WAG54G) and a set of HP6380 in one. About 2 nights ago an update to Windows Installer by himself and rebooted the laptop (even though I have some turned off automatic updates what they seem to be screwing with anything these updates produce still grr)...

I went to try and print and to found the 6380 was absent from the list of available printers... The problem is not with the wireless network (as it is trendy and functional). I don't know what it does the update of windows... but when I tried to reinstall the drivers for this printer from the disc, he acknowledged that they were already installed... So I uninstalled them instead (and it is taken up only parts of the driver remained and he removed these pieces).

Then I tried to do a fresh driver... install that took a long time because it got stuck at the end... Finally, he came up with an error and so I tried to introduce him, HP - and received click on a desktop icon... (Icon HP - XP Installation). I tried it but it tells me to 1) Reinstall driver (done twice -) solve printing problems wireless (not a problem at this point given that I have no printer driver and I can use the network wireless for other things very well) well tried anyway... or 2

Anyone has any suggestions please > in the past when Windows updates have caused problems, I used the system restore to roll back, but this is only a temporary solution - as Windows insists on the updates I want!

    Thank you very much!

If you have the original HP software CD, look in the folder of the ccc/utils for a L3_unintsall (or similar).  Run for an uninstall very full.

    Reset.

Now, download the latest version of the software for your printer from the "Support & Driver" link at the top of this page.  DO NOT reinstall from the CD (a good rule is in general not the CDs software, but to go to the website of the manufacturer for the latest and best).

  • Windows Update error Code 80246008 on system running Windows 7

    Hello

I have a problem installing the Windows updates on my system (running Windows 7).

Windows Update tells me that I have three important updates, but when I try to download, it tells me that they do not have.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Norton applications are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself. See if the following solves your problem:

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) via Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel |) Programs and features, if you are using the classic view).

4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

    5. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above, and then select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    6. do a clean install of the 2010 version of your Norton application (for example, Norton 360 2010) using your product ID & reboot: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

TIP: Do not activate or install additional modules of Norton (for example, Norton Anti-Phishing) immediately.

    7. manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a prompt "no update more".

    8 test cycle.

  • Windows installed the automatic windows update agent and I would appreciate help with the settings option in this newly installed agent update so no update never install or download unless I choose to do.

    Hello.

I have windows vista 32 bit home edition.

Today somehow automatically installed windows ' automatic update agent 747600226

I always keep my settings to check the updates but let me choose whether to update or install.

With this new "update automatic agent" which automatically installed on my system, I want to make sure I have place it properly so that it remains in the same way that I always have my settings but two settings (options), he checked, and are confusing for me to know what those checked settings will do.

I would like to help you with these settings to make sure that the update is still as I want.

Below chose correctly when the new program installed today.  That's how I still want the settings to be:

Look for updates but let me choose whether to update or install

Please let me know if I need to change all the options account required in addition to this update agent to ensure that only, I choose to update or install.

There are four options and a box is in two and I don't know if I should remove the check marks or not.

Here are the other four options that I need to know how to configure it so that only I have update/install.

Once again, the download automatic microsoft today (update automatic agent 7.4.7600.226) without asking for my incentive preset automatic update options and that's what I'm trying to make sure is set correctly so that nothing installs or updates without asking me or let me do.

Option 1: (this option is checked. If I leave it checked will be it install or warn me only?)

Give me updates recommended in the way I receive important updates.

Option 2: (this is not checked and am not worried about this one)

Allow all users to use installed on this pc.

    Option 3:
(this is checked and want to know if should uncheck; what I don't want is any what to auto install, but the wording of this option and option 1 are vague because of the "give me " so I don't know what it means or will do.)  If this box is left to it automatically update/install?)

Give me updates for Microsoft products and looking for new optional microsoft software when I update windows

Option #4 (this is not checked, and I am not concerned about this).

See the notification me detailed when new microsoft software is available.

Thank you very much for your help.

  • Windows Update Causes startup problem

I have an interesting problem with Windows Update (or apparently is from Windows Update). I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, if that info is needed. There are two updates I have not install, as I am not sure that is the cause. The updates in question are Internet Explorer 8 and Windows Defender definitions 1.63.604.0. Here's what's happening.

When you restart after Windows updates, the computer starts with a black screen with a mouse pointer. That's all. Happened every time I tried to start after the pdates. I can reboot into SafeMode very well, is apparently a problem driver or update.

I also installed DivX on the computer, but it seemed to work as I could watch .avi via WMP thereafter, so I excluded. I thought that if there was a problem with it, it would not have worked in the first place, but I thought it was interesting.

In any case, the only solution I found doing a system restore and do not install updates day or DivX, since technically I don't know which is the cause. I had to restore the system 3 times already and I didn't continue to do because this computer was very expensive and I don't want to ruin the hardware or something.

Someone knows something about an error with updates, or perhaps with DivX that may have caused this. The computer works fine without the updates or DivX, I just want to know what could be the real problem so if it is only one of the 3, I can install the other two at least.

Change your update settings, install the updates one at a time, hide the problem:

Click Start > right click on computer > properties > Windows updates down the lower left corner > updates installed in the lower left corner in the next window

    > then click the one that you don't want > uninstall will appear at the top > uninstall it.

  • Faulty Windows Update causes PC freeze (?)

My PC freezes 2 minutes after loading Windows (XP SP3). HDD is audible during startup, and then continuously until system freezes.  Only problem, I could detect is Windows Update: according to the automatic program set elements are misconfigured. Fix, he could not correct the problem. I tried the manual fix (in Safe Mode) by following the instructions on the support network, but did not work (971058 KB). "Not sure if it was because I tried in safe mode, but the mode" normal currently not functional enough "to try it y it."

Rolled back to previous restore points with no result. Tried to manually download all fix/update Windows Update is working but unable to do it in safe mode and in "normal" mode the system hangs when the site is loaded.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Looks more like a hardware or a hardware driver issue.

I do not remember what, if any, of what you can do in mode safe - but give it a shot.  Even some parts, that you did before.

    Search for malware:

Download, install, execute, update and perform analyses complete system with the two following applications:

Remove anything they find.  Reboot when necessary.  (You can uninstall one or both when finished.)

Search online with eSet Online Scanner.

The less you have to run all the time, most things you want to run will perform:

Use Autoruns to understand this all starts when your computer's / when you log in.  Look for whatever it is you do not know using Google (or ask here.)  You can hopefully figure out if there are things from when your computer does (or connect) you don't not need and then configure them (through their own built-in mechanisms is the preferred method) so they do not - start using your resources without reason.

You can download and use Process Explorer to see exactly what is taking your time processor/CPU and memory.  This can help you to identify applications that you might want to consider alternatives for and get rid of all together.

Cleaning the components of update on your Windows XP computer

Download and run the MSRT tool manually:
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
(Ignore the details and download the tool to download and save to your desktop, run it.)

    Reset.

Download/install the latest program Windows installation (for your operating system):
    (Windows XP 32-bit: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3 - x 86 .exe )
(Download and save it to your desktop, run it.)

    Reset.

    and...

Download the latest version of Windows Update (x 86) agent here:
    http://go.Microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=91237
... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After you register on the root of the C:\ drive, follow these steps:

Close all Internet Explorer Windows and other applications.

    AutoScan--> RUN and type:
    %SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
    --> Click OK.

(If asked, select 'Run'). --> Click on NEXT--> select 'I agree' and click NEXT--> where he completed the installation, click "Finish"...

    Reset.

Now reset your Windows with this FixIt components update:
