I would check to see if you have a Trojan or a virus on your system.  He saw several cases with that error and it has been resolved by removing the Trojan horse and reboot your system. Once the Trojan horse has been removed, they were able to install from Windows Update again. There could be various reasons for the updates to fail. No matter what security software installed on the computer may crash or services related to the programs installed on the computer. Also if there are corruptions in the files\folders related to Windows updates.

Reset update components would actually try fixing the part of corruption by recreating these files and also to re-register the files necessary .dll (Dynamic Link Library).
