Windows Update stuck with 'Check updates'

Separated from this thread.

I have also the same problem rmahmud28 is seen except mine is Windows 7. He is stuck with 'Check updates' and I've already updated the Windows Update Agent. I tried some other stuff, like your FixIt tools, but nothing.

No idea why or how... the problem was solved by itself. Looks like I have left no system check all these 300 updates available for download.

Thanks anyway

Before you answer, keep in mind that I tried the following things:

1.) downloaded and installed "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab" so that the system is set. It did not work.

2.) tried the selected responds Vinod Mr proposed on this page. It did not work. (This is to turn the update services / BITs, renaming 2 slots to * .old, and then turn the services turn it on to reattempt the update checking.)

  • Update Windows Vista crashes with 'check updates'

Last month, Windows Vista updates began to hang on to the 'check updates'.

I have: 1. tried all the fixes I could find.
2 reloaded Vista with SP1 from a recovery partition.
3 update worked until SP2; SP2 downloaded and installed OK.

    4. then, the update said I need latest update agent (7.6.7600.256). Downloaded and installed OK. At this point, the Windows update fails.
    5. If I uninstall SP2, but let the agent update, it works. When I reinstall SP2, it fails.

    6. I have installed a completely different image of Vista - this one was integrated in SP2. This version fails in the same way.

    7. I ran SFC, CHKDSK, System diags, updated all my drivers updated BIOS and replaced the memory. As far as I can tell this is the only thing that does not work on my PC.

Anyone has any ideas. ? -Thanks!

    Hi Ichabod22:

Thanks for your comments, and happy this worked.  I did have the chance to try this workaround yet - my phase "check for updates..." ran for 4 hours during my may 2016 updated Patch Tuesday before we found 16 available updates - but quite a few users of Win 7 SP1 and SP2 of Vista are now reporting that before installing these updates Windows kernel mode driver (Win32k.sys) each month (for example the KB3145739 in April 2016; KB3153199 in may 2016) reduced their updates for Patch Tuesday to hours to minutes.

I doubt that this is a permanent solution so be sure to check the page Web of Dalai Search for Windows Updates takes forever?-a possible solution next month to see if a new version of Win32k.sys is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center before your race updates your June 2016 Patch Tuesday.

Woody Leonhard has published a series of articles on of temporary workaround in his Woody on Windows blog, including Windows 7 update scans still holding? KB 3153199 can solve the problem, so congratulations to Woody, Dalai and others to share this potential solution.

What you do not understand, is that you now do a logoff and reboot for a fresh start of windows.

The problem should be gone because the download folder has been emptied.

Recently, I started the download for Windows 10 using 'media creation tool. When the Setup program is started, it got stuck on "check updates", it's over an hour now and it is still stuck at 0%. What am I supposed to do?

There are actually two options in creating media tool:

    • Update this PC now: Automatic Download, Installation. You don't need to do anything. You try this option.
    • Create an installation media for PC:Download an Installation file. When downloaded and opened, you find a setup.exe to run the Inplace upgrade. Make sure you only download the installation media according to your system.

  • Updates Windows 7 - stuck on 'check updates'...

I have a HP desktop computer.  Running Windows 7 Home Premium.  Recently upgraded to the 10 Windows (while it was free).  Discovered that even after the analysis of compatibility says 'OK' I had to call Microsoft for more help and told me that my computer was not compatible.  Asked why the analysis said it was.  No real answer not followed.  Little has been said to restore to Windows 7.  After that I have known issues.  Before the update of window 10, this computer has been running great!

in any case, I noticed recently that my computer is not updated.  When I go on ' check for updates ', it just stays on that.  The status bar does not move, but just on the 'check updates' for days.  The only way to stop it is to restart the computer.  But I know there are updates because my other computer is up-to-date (did not upgrade Windows 10 - but is currently running Windows 7).  So, I have sen the videos and articles on remove and clean up the folder "Software Distribution".  I did it several times and it DOESN'T WORK.  At one point, I decided to do a factory restore.  Took the computer to update 1.  At ran Windows Update and found 16 available updates and other things to seem to be good.  But noticed once the "Service Pack 1" has been downloaded and installed the Windows Update is blocked again.  So, I'm lost here.  What can I do?  Is there a solution?  Or should I trash this computer and buy a MAC?  Questions please ask.

    Help, please... Thank you!

  • Computer laptop Pavilion G6 with 8.1 window is stuck on the installation of updates

Hi my old laptop Pavillion G6 of 12 months (which was the worst computer I've ever owned!) is stuck on an update. The screen shows the message "Keep your PC up to... this installation to update 1 of 2" for 12 hours (overnight).

A little over 2 weeks ago he had a problem with the WiFi connection - which also seems to be associated with the Windows updates - I got this one and it has been fine since then. Started an automatic update last night and now he's stuck. Any ideas?

    Hi Jamame,

Thanks for your post, I will do my best to help you!

I see that your computer did an update for more than 12 hours and has not completed or seems to have improved.

First of all you could cancel the update, restart the computer.  Then you would go The HP Support Assistant to search for updates or problems. Here is a document to help performance. Improve the performance of the system without adding memory (Windows 7). I would also like to launch the File Checker.  Using the File Checker system to restore the system files. Now repeat your update with her power.

If you want more help, please can you give us the exact model of the G6 you and the operating system you are using. How can I find my model number or product number?

  • 'Check' updates from Windows Update is stuck after that I have reset my laptop

I refreshed and reset my laptop but it will always get stuck 'Check updates' and everything works so slow... than ever before.
Is this a problem with my hard drive?

    OloberSaiko

Sorry, but your reset laptop reset Windows Update.

I recently had to do this in one of my PC and it took three days complete (!) for the Windows Update process finish.  One day find updates, one day to download and one day to apply.

To add to the frustration, during downloads, progress 'freeze' to zero percent!

So, I had it got stuck - but she didn't - and this is important!  Go to C:\Windows\Distribution.  If there are files and folders, Windows Update works, it is simply not updated status information.

You can check that from time to time, and while its download yet, he will continue to grow.  As long as there are files and folders there DO NOT shut down your PC!  This will force again when you reboot.

Sorry... but you just have to leave it on and it will run its course.

    Good luck

  • Windows Update stuck at 'Check updates'

    Original title: Windows Update stuck

I had to recover my laptop windows 7 back to out-of-box state system. Once presented to my office, I immediately went to Windows Update to install all of the updates that I needed. After installing SP1, and restart the computer, windows update to update the update agent, so he could get some more updates. He said he would close and re - open Windows Update, which she did, but now it is stuck on "check updates".

The update that broke the update of Windows was "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320"

I have since made a recovery of the system to the State out-of-box three times and each time "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320" installs Windows Update is stuck saying "check updates".

I did tons of attempts to solve this problem, but it won't find more updates and I can't install more updates.

I have also experienced problems with Windows Update still looking for updates when Windows Update 7.6.7600.320 has been installed automatically after the system update to SP1 (it was after doing a clean install of Windows 7).

    The following worked for me:

    1. manually installing KB3083710

    2. manually installing KB3102810

    3. restart the computer

    4. run the Windows Update Diagnostic tool to reset Windows Update (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058)

5 restart the computer again and search for updates

  • New computer with Windows 7, stuck on the specific update

    Hello world!
I have recently (last Saturday) purchased a new HP laptop with Windows 7 installed. The computer is now going through the standard (I guess they are standard) updates for Windows and successfully completed several rounds of them. Last night after having turned it off the computer began another series of updates, with 14 in the total bundle. She started 1 of 14 around 20:00 and started 4 of 14 at 22:30. From 08:30 the next morning, he was still on 4 of 14.
Is this an update that takes 12 hours to install, or is there another problem causing my computer to not to go beyond the update? I found no way to bypass the update or cancel it.

    Thank you!

Are you able to boot to the desktop now?
