Windows Vista backup and restore: no path to write the disc label

Original title: Back-up-Windows Vista

Automatic backup on windows vista provides a label to write on the dvd in the external disk drive. There is no pop-up window to indicate where to write that the label - so fails it AutoSave.

When I insert a blank DVD RW in the drive E back-up indicates firstly that there is no disc in drive E. When I insert this disc a second time, that a pop-up window indicates that I have to label this disk as shown above, but there is no path [local] who then shows how to label this disc.

Brucebkb123,

I would, if I were you, save all the time and the aggravation of the use of DVDs for backup of files.
Go to a RELIABLE computer store (not Best Buy), ask for an EXTERNAL hard drive for backup of files. Not the 'E' drive that you said. This isn't an external hard drive.
Today, a drive Ext. hard can easily be done for less than $100. It is well worth, instead of pulling your hair.

Make sure what you say "external hard drive for backing up files.

  • Problems of restoring a backup of Windows Vista backup and restore program

I recently had to completely reinstall Windows XP, then the Vista upgrade, to fix a problem with updates of Microsoft.NET and ATI graphic driver.  In may, I made a full backup of my laptop using Vista resident backup and restore program, using an external hard drive to store the backup.  When I learned that I had to reinstall the operating system, I did another backup in August (but not complete) using the same program.  Just after this backup in August, I did the reinstallation of operating systems, with the help of the phone of Dell.  My original problems are solved.

When I was ready to use the restore the Vista program, I had to choose among the two sets of data (May to August) about which I wanted to restore on my laptop.  I chose August, thinking that it would be later.  However, in Outlook, all my saved e-mail messages are gone, I have no e-mail address book and any current calendar entries.  These are the only things I noticed up to this and are not, but I have not checked all the files... they are large enough.

The folder on my laptop which normally contains my Outlook data files shows only a file Archive and the very small current .pst data file for 7 messages in my Inbox.

It seems that the backup of August was important to may backup and maybe most of my Outlook data are in the may backup.  How to get data from two backups in my laptop?  When the backup is a folder with the same name, you have the opportunity to write about it, not copy, or copy it and have 2 folders.

I tried to copy all the data from the external hard drive in the folder of Outlook data on my laptop.  It will eventually be several files, and Outlook reads only the more recent, so I don't always get access to the data that I hope is here!

Can someone please?  My life is in my calendar, I lost years of e-mail addresses, and much saved messages that contain important data.  Thank you!

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query to the Microsoft forum. I will definitely help you with this.

This could be due to corruption on the system files, please follow the methods below.

Step 1: I suggest you to re-create the Task Scheduler.

Steps to re-create the Task Scheduler

    1. Click Start; in the start search type regedit.exe and press ENTER. (If you get a consent prompt, click Yes).
    2. Navigate to the following location. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Schedule keys and remove its subkeys.
    3. Save the changes and then close the registry editor.

Now check if the Task Scheduler works.

Note: The steps mentioned below includes the modification of the system registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Step 2: Perform the scan SFC

I suggest that you can exercise SFC scan and check if that helps. The sfc/scannow command analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions. It is a Windows utility that allows users to find corruptions in Windows system files and restore the damaged files.

See the link: use the File Checker system to repair missing or corrupted system files

  • Can I download Windows XP Backup and Restore Wizard?

When I bought my computer I did not receive the Windows XP disks.  I want to make a backup of the entire system on an external hard drive, as opposed to the individual file backup.  All the help files I've found say to insert the XP disc.  Then I found the Backup Wizard online and install it directly to my computer?

Since the Microsoft Answers forum does not have any kind of information system request when a new question is asked, we know absolutely nothing about your system.  Not knowing the basic information a problem prolongs the frustration and the agony of these issues.

Thank you MS Answers, allowing the resolution of simple problems as frustrating and a lot of time as possible.

If you are using XP Home Edition, you will need to install the XP Backup utility yourself and here are some instructions on how to do it.

If you are not using XP Home and XP backup is to give you some grief, try to describe the issue in more detail.

The backup program is automatically installed on XP Professional, but not on XP Home. If you have the genuine bootable XP Home installation CD, insert it into your system and navigate to this folder:

    \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the installation.

Here is a nice article from Microsoft which tell you all this:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/?kbid=302894

Here is another article that explains how to:

    http://www.winxptutor.com/Ntbackup.htm

If you don't have an installation CD and need to download the Ntbackup.msi file, here is the link if you can download:
    http://www.winxptutor.com/Ntbackup.htm

If you are using in relying on the built in NT backup to back up your system, it is the primitive technology (obviously - because you will be asked for a floppy disk).  If you have a disaster (even minor), you will have a big problem, trying to recovery your stuff, if you don't have a floppy drive.

If you want to make a backup, it makes sense to use modern technology - and that the technology is not integrated into XP.

There are many popular options for XP Backup and imaging software (s) of third parties.

A people a popular seem to love East of Acronis.

With this (free 30 day trial) you backup, you can make a bootable CD or bootable USB (which is modern, huh?) and use than disaster.

They used to have a completely free version - maybe no more - just the trial, then you must buy it, but it is highly respected.

It is so much more robust than the XP Backup, it's laughable.

Many other options if you do a little research on Google...

Here are a few products that PML has proposed may be attractive (use Google to find them):

    Acronis
    Macrium Reflect
    Paragon backup and restore
    DriveImageXML

Some disk cloning software for you to Google ideas:

    EASEUS ToDo Backup

  • Windows 7 backup and restore - regular back Ups

When the computer is down/standby at a scheduled time, how long after the scheduled Windows 7 still will attempt a backup when the computer is available?

I noticed several instances where backup and restoration runs when the computer is started after at the request of backup time.

I have absolutely no idea why engaged Microsoft Support Engineer 'expert' that is used by Microsoft suggests to disable the automatic backup and "check if this is useful".  Perhaps the 'expert' will tell us how to check if it helps after you disable the task.

If you look in the Task Scheduler to backup tasks, automatic backup settings tab see here:

What does "Run task as soon as possible after a regular departure is missed" mean?

Check here on the TechNet site , he says:

Run task as soon as possible after that a regular check is not respected

If this option is checked, the Task Scheduler service will start the task if the task is scheduled to run at a certain time, but for some reason any (for example, the computer was turned off or the Task Scheduler service was busy) the task was not activated. The Task Scheduler service does not start the task immediately after the task is not respected. By default, the service waits ten minutes before starting the missed task.

You can read all about the tab settings of the task here:

  • Windows 7 backup and restore not recognizing external hard drives

My laptop recognizes the drives external hard and other storage devices and I can read and manually copy files, etc for them. But the backup and restore told me that nothing is connected when I try to run it. Also, when I connect the external hard drive to a USB port, the menu that is displayed does not include the option of backup of the device just connect. Is there a setting I need to change in the backup and restore program? Or is there another solution that everyone is aware of it please?

    Hi Sally,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

    I understand that the backup and restore does not recognize the external hard drive, but Windows doesn't. I'll be happy to help you with your query. Let me ask you;

    1. Is - this happy with all external hard drives or individual?
    2. What kind of backup are trying to create, auto or manual?
    3. You did it recently no specific changes in the computer?

There may be several reasons why backup & restore does not recognize the external hard drive. Let's check out the steps below.

Step 1: Connect the device to a USB (Universal Serial Bus) and a different test.

Step 2: You can check if the services responsible for the backup of restoration & work or not.

Volume Shadow Copy and backup of Windows service.

To check the services, you can follow the procedure.

    (a) click Start.

    (b) in the Search tab, type Services.msc , and then press Efriendship.

    (c) now in the services window, locate Windows Backup service and Volume Shadow Copy services. Check if they are started.

Note: Check the services separately, and then close the Services window.

Step 3: Run the next Fixit and check if the disc is recognized.

Click here to launch the Fixit.

Step 4: You can try to temporarily disable the security software of the computer and check with the question. Later, re-enable the security software.

See: , disable the anti-virus software

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attack.

Hope this information is useful. Please feel free to answer in the case where you are facing in the future other problems with Windows.
