Windows Vista updates (12 April 2010) broke all the desktop shortcuts

On 13 April, I fist notice this problem. I managed to it is resolved according to restore my computer to a previous point prior to the windows vista update have been installed. I didn't create a new restore point and also forgot to uncheck "automatic installation of windows. A few days later, the same problem after updates have been installed again on April 15. Unfortunately, this time I don't have a restore point previous April 15. So, I restored it on next day 16, but not resolved the issue. So I uninstall all vista windows update installed on April 15 but did not help either.

Fortunately it affects only an admin user (user account that run windows update) all users are very well.

Any suggestions to solve this problem, much appreciated.

Kind regards

    Hello

What antivirus/antispyware/security products do you have on the machine? Be one you ALREADY had on this
machine, including those you have uninstalled (they leave leftovers behind which can cause strange problems).

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Part of the problem is probably SpyBot which can greatly affect the peformance IE and Vista/Windows 7.

Start - type in the search box-> find Services at top - click right on - RUN AS ADMIN

Double-click Service SBSD and change it to MANUAL and STOP

Then run SpyBot and in settings uncheck TeaTimer - close and restart.

Now you can run SpyBot as a scanner at the request.

Then, run checkdisk - schedule it to run at next boot, then apply OK your way out, then restart.

  • Windows 7 - all the desktop shortcuts have disappeared

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (Build 7100 evaluation version)

I was using my computer tonight (normal use, nothing happens out of the unusual, without errors or problems etc.). I shut down the system to go for dinner but later when I got to use again, I started it and connected but were none of my icons on my desktop. I got about 26 icons, 4 included shortcuts 'system' to the computer, the user files, network, trash.

When click with the right button on the desktop, the option is there to add a shortcut, navigation and selecting a file results in nothing, no shortcut is visible. When I go to my desktop to users home directory, in the following location: "C:\Users\loggedonusername\Desktop" most of the shortcuts is visible here (including those above, I added that resulted in anything on the desktop) and I can add more within this directory, but they also do not appear. The 'system' ones (computer, user files, network, trash) still show as checked in the menu of desktop customization, unchecking, reticking, change theme and other options does nothing to restore them on my desk.
Icons/shortcuts on the start menu are fine (visible and functional) - just nothing I try seems to show those on my desk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS - I did a full system scan with the AV, nothing, even with malware/spyware scanners software. I also did a scan with Windows SFC - audit was 100%, no violation error / integrity.

Most likely a minor bug with the CR. After execution of the RC for several months I am now facing two minor problems myself with the Explorer shell... (1) the window 'Opens' is enabled preview pane and no matter what I do, it is not off and (2) I had to rebuild my library because they had all kinds of mix upward on the folders they were supposed to point to (my library of music made for my photos, pictures sharp documents downloads pointed to a nonexistent drive, etc.). The good news? The RC is just the RC and is only temporary :-) Jonathan Matthis aka "7test" on MSN QnA

I'm Zenith one 733F error Code when I try to install the latest Windows Vista Update, which is an update to SQL Server 2005 (Service Pack 2 KB970895).  This update has failed several times now.

  • Can configure is no longer Windows Vista update to include the updates for other Microsoft products (Office, Visual Studio, etc.).

I once had a problem with Windows Update, which gives me a family of .NET Framework through the window of Control Panel\Windows to update to Windows Vista, even if it has been installed and has Microsoft support help me through EasyAssist. The problem of .NET Framework has been fixed, but now I have a problem: the Control Panel\Windows update window informs me today I'll receive downloads for Windows only, not for all Microsoft products.
When I click on "Change settings", the Microsoft Update option is no longer present.
When I click on the link 'Get' updates for more products, I am now redirected to the former site of Windows Update V4 (who is not supposed to appear on Windows Vista) instead of Microsoft Update, and this site Web of Windows Update cannot detect the Vista updates.
So I'm stuck now with only being able to get informed about the upgrades to Windows, but not other updates from Microsoft. And we don't mean Windows Vista x 64 final with the last Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.788. This new update would be the culprit?

    Hi Unicodemaster787,

Even if it is not automatic, you should be able to get your updates from the Microsoft Download center http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/en/default.aspx

Other than that, your best bet would be to do a repair install and let the system to reinstall the original files and settings.

When you perform a repair installation, it restores the current installation of Windows Vista to the version on the installation DVD. This requires you to reinstall all updates that do not appear in this version of Windows Vista.

To perform a repair of Windows Vista installation, follow these steps:

    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive of the computer.

Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, click Start, type : \setup.exe in the Search box, and then click configuration in the list programs. Then click on install now.

    3. Click connect to get the latest updates for installation (recommended).
    4. Insert the product key if you are prompted to do so.
    5. Click to accept the Microsoft software license agreement.
    6. On the screen which type of installation you want , click upgrade.
    7. Once the installation is complete, restart the computer, and then try again to install updates.

Remember, however, that it could undo previous changes to solve your problems of .net.

What happens when you try to update Defender via the UPDATE on the update tab button (for example, another error of 0 x 80242017)?  [DOCUMENT TEST/NOW]

When you run a manual check of updates, is an update of definitions of Defender offered as an optional update and if so, allows it to install?

Note: A computer can become infected a few seconds of being connected to the internet without a valid antivirus application installed. It of a very good chance that you see the effects of an infection being a certain type and that demand for Webroot is not installed or working properly.

  • Failure recovery Windows vista CTOERROR.flg and after that error the error 0 x 643 during the installation of windows update

    Hi all

system information: HP DV6 LAPTOP, windows vista sp1

When I try to install windows vista sp1 disks/recovery partition that I get the error recovery manager prompting me to choose either to see the details of the failure or restart: CTOERROR.flg as a Notepad on my desk. I did try 100 times but nothing helped. I can't restart after this recovery failure message because it shows the dialog box when restarting: windows security update is not properly installed or is not approved. So, I have to go through the process of recovery again to see the desktop (any operation - music video, internet, all), but only once.

The last time I got this message too. When I did the windows installation of recovery a few months back discs, this time I figured out to install all updates IMP to automatic update via update of windows. All updates have been installed successfully, then it restarted and gone through the process of language settings, time settings and everything...

But this time when I'm trying to update windows, I get windows update, error 0 x 643 which is updating security for .net Framework 3.5 sp1 and update family. I don't know the answer how to exit with this error "windows help" and also this forum too, which asks for the installation of the updates of the .net framework from the windows update site directly. But the problem is:

Updated Windows ask me to restart windows automatic or manual update installation takes place and restart causes problem because it shows the dialog box - windows security update is not installed successfully. I need to install all updates at once like last time of my understanding. :

    1. so, if I install the update to windows (to try my luck as last time) it says error 0 x 643 for .net framework and you ask to reboot, and after that when I try to manually install failed 0 x 643 updated it asks me to restart windows for pending updates.

    2. in the alternative, if I try to install the update failed everything first just after the failure of the recovery it doesn't allow me to install important updates for vista sp1 and asked to restart windows.

All I need is to update all updates via windows automatic update that is not happening at the moment.

Not even be able to upgrade to sp2 bcz it also restarts for installation.

    Help, please.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi harry973,

Download Service Pack 1 will not convert in a disc in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

A recovery disk will not be useful to perform an Inplace upgrade to.
You will need the original Windows Installation disc.
If the disc that came with the computer, then it would be a drive OEM (manufacturer). This disk can only be used for a reinstallation of Windows.

    Hope this helps!

  • Windows Vista update error Code 80073712, Code 47 9, Code 8007371 B.

I have seen code 80073712 for several months now, but just kept on ignore him. Also, I followed all of the possible solutions offered by Microsoft, but nothing helped. This is ridiculous, please help.

    • Checked the Welcome Center: it says that I have service pack 2.
    • I don't have access to a Windows Vista DVD. It is installed on the PC when I bought from Best Buy several years ago and the DVD is not available at the present time. Is there another way to perform an upgrade on the spot?
