  Not quite, but pretty close. Media Direct could not lock the boot sector. It must be a BIOS lock or a mechanism of protection provided by your antivirus software.  Given that, I would check your program settings then for all that prevents changes to the boot sector.   I have Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 on HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook PC 64 - bit operating system. For about a month, it stopped updating. Whenever I want to update it gives me the same message "Windows could not search for new updates. Error encountered, Code 80070426 ".

  After the possible solutions for others, which posted a similar problem, I typed "service" on start search and on the side slsvc, it gives a description. When I click Start the service, it gives me the message "error 2: the system cannot find the file specified."

  Make sure that the automatic update services has been started.  Make sure that BITS is started.

  1. click on start and run, type services.msc, and then click ok.

  2. in the list of services, click on automatic updates, and then click Properties.

  3. in the startup type list, click Automatic, and then click on apply.

  4. If the service status is stopped, click Start, and then click ok.

  5. right click on background intelligent transfer service, and then click Properties.

  6. in the startup type list, click Manual, and then click on apply.

  1. have you tried the steps suggested by Srinivas R in the previous post to make a startup on your computer repair using the Windows installation disc?

  2. you remember what changes you made to the computer before you start this error?

  I suggest that you access the system recovery options using a Windows Vista installation disc and do a startup repair and if this fails, you can do a restore of the system from the Windows recovery environment.
