Windows Vista XP laptop

I work for a non for profit charity and have the task to maintain the PCs and laptops that we use. I have a Compaq laptop that is used for the staff to write notes client and other related tasks. It is a hard ram and 500gigb of 1gigb drive. This is a Vista machine, but for some unknown reason it is Windows XP. I don't know who, when, or why this has been done, but I'd love to reverse this situation. Unfortunately I don't have a compatible disc to install Vista on the laptop. I have only a Windows 7 disc that came with another machine, our company has bought so I can't use it. The system restore dates back to February 2015, so it's no good for me either. Are we doomed to keep XP that support both or is there a difficulty easy or inexpensive to do this as I very limited it funds to buy software.

Thank you

Heather

Hello

IF the HP recovery partition has not been destroyed, which I'm sure it would have been, through the installation of XP, you press F11 repeatedly at startup to start the process of recovery HP back to factory settings.

See if you can still order the recovery media, which I think that HP supplies more because of the age of Vista.

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

Here's how to do a clean install of Vista using a DVD of Vista from Microsoft:

"How to do a clean install and configure with a full Version of Vista '

And once the operating system is installed, go to your computer manufacturer's website and get the latest drivers for your particular model or laptop computer.

And phone Activation may be necessary when you use the above installation method.

  • Windows Vista SP1 laptop computer upgraded to Windows 8.1 / 10 Windows

    Hello!

A long time ago (7 years probably) supplied with Windows Vista Home Basic x 86, we bought a laptop Toshiba Portege M800. I plan to upgrade to Windows 8/8.1/10, but I don't know if it will work. Here are my specs.

    Hello

We cannot tell you that you can definitely improve 8.1 or 10.

We provide only the information on the system requirements. Then, it is yours for a search.

And they're both done with a clean installation (no upgrade path) and they are not free.

Do the following before upgrade you to Windows 8.1.

Check if the manufacturer of your computer/laptop has Windows 8 drivers available for your model.

If this is not available, Windows 8/8.1 not install and work properly for you.

There is a lot of information in this first link from Microsoft:

Download and run the Windows Upgrade Assistant 8.1 of to see if your machine is compatible Windows 8.1 and read the update for Windows 8.1: FAQ here

    Hello

    Thanks for the post.

    Disconnect any attached external devices.

If you use a third-party antivirus disable and then install updates and check.

Temporarily turn off the firewall and antivirus software and try to install the updates.
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/disable-antivirus-software#1TC=Windows-Vista

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable the antivirus software. If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network at the time the anti-virus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

If this does not help, then I suggest you to put the computer in a clean boot state and then install. Start your computer in a clean boot state, you can reduce conflicts between software and help identify the root cause of the problem. You can read this article for more information:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: after the resolution of the problem, reset the computer to start as usual. Refer to the step How to configure the computer to start as usual after a boot minimum troubleshooting under more information.

Try this and let us know the results.

Try the following and see if it helps.

    Method 1:

Rename the Pending.xml file, and then change the registry.

    Note:
serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry ) how to back up and restore the registry in Windows)

    (A)
start Windows Vista and go to system recovery options:

    1. Insert the Windows Vista installation disk into the disk drive and restart the computer.

    2. When you are prompted to restart from the disc, press any key.

    3. When you are prompted, configure the language to install, time and currency format and keyboard or options for method of entry that you want, and then click Next.

    4. on the page to install Windows, click on repair your computer.

    5. on the System Recovery Options page, click the version of the Windows Vista operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

    B) use the system recovery options to rename the Pending.xml file and edit the registry:

    1. in the System Recovery Options page, click command prompt.

2 type cd C:\windows\winsxs, and then press ENTER.

3 type ren pending.xml pending.old, and then press ENTER.

    4. type regedit and press ENTER.

    5. select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

    6. on the file menu, click on load the hive.

    7. look for the following folder:

    C:\windows\system32\config\components

    8. When you are prompted for a name, type Offline_Components.

    9. in the registry editor, find and delete the following registry subkey:

    HLKM\Offline Components\AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

    HKLM\Offline Components\PendingXmlIdentifier

    C) exit the Registry Editor:

    1. at the command prompt, type exit to quit the registry editor.

    2. press ENTER.

    3. click on restart.

    Method 2:

Refer to the steps in the following Microsoft article.

Error: Failed to setup of the Windows updates. Restoration of the changes. Do not turn off your computer when you try to install Windows updates

    Notes:

Before you perform the upgrade on the spot, I would recommend you to back your files using windows backup.

When you perform the system restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you have installed are removed.

Hope that the information provided is useful.

I would like to know if I can do the free download and use windows 7 instead of windows vista in laptop (I understand that there is a similar model earlier). Windows Vista is to give a lot of problems even with installed virus scan software. It is slow and gives challenges to the use of household memebrs.

Many offered computer manufacturers free updates from Vista to Windows 7 on computers purchased during a certain period of time, but this time with the supply have long expired.  There is no such offer to download/update free available anywhere.

  • Windows Vista / Aero on my Equium M70

Hello. I just downloaded Windows Vista RC1 for my M70 that only, I bought a couple of months it is from Curry. It has Vista capable sticker on it and the seller has confirmed that Vista will work properly with 3D enhancements.

Of course, I want to have a full experience of Windows Vista. Yet, Windows Aero does not work on my machine because of the graphics card: Mobile Intel (r) 82915 GM/GMS/910GML. I didn't bother installing the basic version again. I did some research for the past hours. The equipment meets the requirements of Vista but it's the Intel driver that needs to be updated and Intel have yet to put the pilot. I sent them an email about this, and they said that it is not their policy to disclose information about software that may or may not be current. They also stressed that Vista is not officially released yet.

What I want to know is, Intel released a driver for my machine/chipset compatible with Windows Aero, even after that Vista has been officially released? He has seriously upset that my laptop, that I spent so much may not be at the height.

    Help, please!

    Hello

I found this info on one of the European sites of Toshiba on Vista.

The "Windows Vista Capable" designation is given to Windows Vista Capable Toshiba notebooks that meet the following minimum requirements. Computers laptop Toshiba with Vista Capable logo can be upgraded to support the Windows Vista operating system.
A Windows Vista Capable laptop includes at least:
    -A modern processor
-512 MB of system memory or more
-A DirectX 9 capable graphics processor

All portable Windows Vista Capable will be able to run at least the base Windows Vista experiences. To enjoy the full experience of Windows Vista, including the Windows Aero user experience, ask for a Windows Vista Premium Ready designated compatible laptop.

"Windows Vista Premium Ready" designation is given to a Windows Vista Capable laptop that meets the minimum recommended for Home Premium, Ultimate, Business, or Windows Vista Enterprise edition.
Features available in editions of the specific premium Windows Vista, such as the ability to watch and record live TV, may require additional hardware.
    -Processor 1 GHz 32-bit (x 86) or 64-bit (x 64)
    -1 GB of system memory
-Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a driver WDDM, 128 MB graphics memory (minimum), Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel
-40 GB hard drive with 15 GB of free space capacity
    DVD - ROM drive
    -Audio output
    -Ability to access Internet

As mentioned that the Vista is not official on the market and if you need no driver for Vista, you must wait until the Vista will be official released

If the Vista Ultimate is a full retail product and then install it here.  You may need to use telephone activation, but this isn't a problem.

If it is a Vista Ultimate upgrade version, you must have an operating system that is valid for upgrade and without a preinstalled OS or a license for the new computer "legally" impossible to install the upgrade version.
