Windows xp pro sp3 can not get updates - don't stop to check updates and nothing happens.

For the past 2 weeks I can't get windows on windows xp pro sp3 updates. The green bar that runs while the verification of updates just keeps running and running and does'nt stop until I have stop. No error codes at all.
Run the fix it tool and indicates "registration for the service is missing or corrupted" and it offers a solution for the problem of the does'nt.
What is the reference for this?

I had the same problem and you will spend one day trying many suggestions, including various Microsoft Fix - its, which none worked, and which some worse messing with the BITs service (that I then had to restore, losing even more time).

In the end, I found that the problem was related to the update of Cumulative security for Internet Explorer 8. There is a kind of incompatibility with previous versions of this update that causes IE stuck when he tries to check the updates.

The solution for me was to download and install the * last * IE Cumulative Security Update * manually * before you try to run Windows Update to get the other patches. Here's how:

(1) using the Internet Explorer, I visited the current MS security bulletin page

http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin

(2) from there, I went to the latest summary (November 2013) and found the update of IE at the top of the list: "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2888505).

(3) I couldn't see direct links for just this update, so I copied the number of the Knowledge Base - 2888505 - and google for "Download KB2888505" (Bing didn't work by the way). This gave me the direct download link:

http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?ID=41074

(4) I have downloaded and run the update installer and then restarted (as required by the software update).

Microsoft/Windows Update restart worked. I repeated the same process on a second computer with the same problem and it worked also.

  • Windows xp pro sp3 will not start corrupted boot.ini and hal.dll - please help

I installed Norton 360 offred via internet was last updated.  It immediately launched all applications previously disabled at STARTUP in msconfig.  And shortly after he started to gives me the blue screen "to the death".  This done in two days, and I was desperately trying to solve the problem by turning off almost all applications critical to running Windows XP Pro SP3, Norton and Office 2007 Home and student.  I even went and tried to edit the Boot.ini file in startup and recovery under the Advanced tab in the workstation properties.  Now all I get is an error message Windows cannot start because the hal.dll file is missing or damaged.  I replaced it by copying a modified version of the boot sequence, while the hard drive of my laptop was enslaved to my desktp PC, but nothing helped.  I can't even the Recovery Console to start on my laptop.  I need HELP, please.

These profile errors are usually caused by one of the following:

1-profile corruption.  The user profile is damaged and that Windows cannot load.  To resolve this issue, create a new user profile and move your files to the new profile.   See here for more information:

How to copy data from a corrupted to a new profile in Windows XP user profile

2 drives or corruption of the file system.  Run chkdks /f on the volume C:.  Please note that there is ALWAYS a risk of data loss when chkdsk is run on a volume, ideally, you should have a backup of your files before running chkdsk.

3 - virus or malware activity.  Some of these parasites can revoke your permissions on the folder of your profile, check the permissions on "C:\Documents and Settings\Andre" and make sure you have a full control on the folder.  Check this box until you try #1 or 2 above.

Some of these parasites can also revoke your permissions in key areas of the registry and create real Dany on the machine that can prevent you to run some of your software.  Use Regedit to load your old profile hive (NTUSER. (DAT) in your profile folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Andre\NTUSER. (DAT) and make sure you have full control over the key.  In the advanced security settings to ensure that the child objects are inherit permissions from the parent and put a check mark on "replace entries permissions for all child objects...". "Click on apply and OK your way out.  See here for easy to follow instructions for loading and editing of remote registry hives: http://www.rwin.ch/xp-live/regedit.htm make sure you unload the hive when you're done, otherwise the changes will not be saved.

These parasites can also revoke permission on the other key of registry and system files, you can use SubInACL to restore your permissions on these key objects, see here for more information:

  • Can not get updates after the download and the installation and reboot

I have a Dell Dimension E521, Window Vista Home Premium desktop computer. Iwill download and install updates, but whenever I restart my computer I have installed. But to install anything, I need to reset the time and date, and the time zone. No updates of any kind can be installed. I can't move IE7 to IE8 or any site at all. My windows freezes constantly and I often crashes. Drivers will not install either.  Help, please!

After that you turn on your computer and reset the time to be correct, it does keep time until what you restart it?

If she keep the correct time until the reboot, the problem lies with a coin size $5 trickle battery in your motherboard.

    Replace it.

You must have the correct time to get updates and install it properly...

    Hi Markh21518,

    1. do you get this error when you try to install Windows updates?

  • Can not get updates after SP2 installed on Win Vista Home

I just installed SP2 on two computers. A Compaq laptop and the other a HP desktop computer. I can't receive any update on computers.

Windows Update insists that the computer is up to date.

In comparison, my own computer with Windows Vista SP2 has many applied updates.

    How can I fix this?

    Charles_W_Davis,
If it's been a few days since you have installed SP2 and don't always get updates then you may need to reset Windows Update components.  Run the hotfix article tool, and then run Windows Update.  First, run the tool in normal mode, then test, if it is not corrected, then run it in aggressive mode.  Post back with the results. • He can not get updates due to currupt registry.

Maybe a virus/malware or a mistake on my part but I can no longer get automatic windows updates or manually. Will not be updated with security icon on the task bar warning me and in Control Panel 'SYSTEMS' I check the recommended automatic updates but still. Will going by using registry fix system restore curruptions? If this is not the case, what are my options to resolve this problem. BTW, when I go to MS page to download updates is said error page is not available.

Suggest that you first spread malware as the cause of the problem by following these steps:

    (1) have your system scanned by the antivirus/security suite installed.
    (2) run this tool from Kaspersky: how to remove malware belonging to the family Rootkit.Win32.TDSS

    http://support.Kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?QID=208280684>
    (3) download, install, update and run full scans with two of these tools free anti-malware:

    MalwareBytes AntiMalware

    http://www.Malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free>

    SUPERAntiSpyware

    http://SUPERAntiSpyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html>

    (4) run the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe) tool:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/310747>

    `~`

If no malware has been detected, there's a Fixit on this page which will reset the Windows Update components:

How to reset Windows Update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058components >

Suggest you download and Save it. Then, close all the open programs and web browsers.
Run Microsoft Fixit50202.msi and choose its default mode.
After that he finished the race, see if the return code is displayed again when looking for updates.

If not, then run the Fixit once more and choose his Aggressive mode.
Restart once it is finished and see if the return code always appears when the updates.

IF malware is detected, then please post if it has been removed and that the specific name of what has been detected.
