Is it possible to do a reinstal or to return to the factory settings? Im not to botherd if all the files are lost, but I would get the lap top operational again. Any help or advice welcome. Hi paulthorogood,
It might be difficult to recover the operating system if there is no XP CD.
· Windows XP was preinstalled on the system?
· Do you know if there is a recovery partition?
Method 1: The following article should help you to recover the operating system.
Method 2: Since you do not have a disc, factory restore may be possible if there is a recovery partition or if there is no available recovery disk. You can contact the computer manufacturer for more information on this.

Satellite Pro A300 - System32\hal.dll file is corrupted or missing
I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A300, which says that the System32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt.
Is it possible to repair the file by a recovery by the laptop itself, or do I have to get a copy of Windows Vista to start over and do it this way?
Hoping to get some possible answers to what to do.
Thanks Christian
Hello
I read that some discussions in different forums and in most cases the new OS installation may solve this problem. The HAL.dll in place in C:\Windows\system32 then maybe you could solve this problem in copy this file from the Vista CD in this folder
You could start the unit by using a Live CD (linux or windows lice CD called PartBe or WinPE)
But the easiest solution would be to the recovery procedure -
\systrem32\hal.dll What can I do with this message:
Windows didn't start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\System32|hal.dll, please reinstall a copy of the above file. Thank you
In Windows XP:

In Windows Vista & 7:

In addition, if the file is actually missing, you can try to boot from a UNIX / Linux Live CD like Knoppix and add/replace the file manually with a file from another PC running THE SAME VERSION OF WINDOWS!
If you are not good with computers, you should ignore this option because it could cause serious problems. If you still want to try, and there is a hal.dll file in
\system32\ BACK IT UP. You have to put back in place. Let us know if it works.

Hello
I read on issues such as
You need to reinstall the OS, but it would also be possible that this error is related to the defective HARD and/or RAM disk.
Many uses had this error again after the new installation of the OS and in individual cases the RAM or the HARD drive has been affected as well. What to say; It s your decision what you want to do... I recommend reinstall Win XP once more to verify if this question relates only to lack hal.dll in the system32 folder.
However the Win XP license is cheap, because Win 7 is on the market and no one wants to use 'old' OS which will be more in the coming years... -
I get the following error message when starting my windows XP Home PC. : Windows didn't start because the following file is missing or damaged
\System32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the file. How do I do that? This could be the result of a corrupt / missing hal.dll file or boot.ini file. You have your windows disc? If so, follow the instructions below. If you do not have your windows disk click HERE to create a disc of windows recovery console.
- Use the Windows XP CD to start your computer.
- When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key.
- Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when you are prompted.
- Type bootcfg/Rebuild, and then press ENTER.
- When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed:Add installation to boot list? (Yes/no/all)
[Type Y in response to this message.]Enter load identifier:
[This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition].Enter operating system load options:
Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER.After completing the previous steps, restart the computer, and then select the first item in the start menu. This should allow Windows XP to start normally.
After Windows XP is successfully loaded, the Boot.ini file can be modified to remove the incorrect entry.
