The serial number in the physical box that you buy in the store wasn't the number for the software.  It was the serial number in the cloud, very difficult to know when you see a serial number in the box with the Cd online.  But thanks for the reply to my post.   I agree, the DVD player seems to be defective. It should work with only Windows drivers. The only additional files that you need would be to play movie discs, etc.

  Are your jumpers on both drives positioned same_If the cd drive is jumper as master, the other slave as you. If the other player is cavalier CS (cable select) the dvd player must be linked, CS. I think most of the HP machines are CS. Try that to see if it solves. If this isn't the case, maybe time to try another drive.
