Would PREVENT you automatic updates and other changes

JO 8600 Pro.  Configuration of the wireless network.

I want to prevent the automatic updates.

There must be a way to stop the automatic firmware / software updates.  I have not found.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" particularly printers.

People update the firmware / software (not only HP) & some things suddenly do not work.

I don't update * nothing * until I know what it is.

I just installed some new cartridges, not HP.  All of a sudden the printer is accessing internet & "Download".  She flashed quickly on the screen of the printer & I couldn't read what it says.

At the same time, he said something like '... then web printing will be also activated. "

I disabled specifically that, in the SAP when I 1st installation program for the printer.  Won't print web, it is useless.

Now, because I have replace a few carts, it's going to turn it back on for me?  Talk about balls of brass.

I canceled that download / stop the printer.  But of course, he had changed my settings & reactivated web printing.  (I disabled it again).

The next power on, printer took some download.  He did not said worth what - has just shown, "Downloaded X of Y" & showed progress.  I immediately cancelled again.

If there are no parameters to prevent no matter what auto FW / software updates, or if she simply ignores them, I'll have to bury the printer under the firewall.

Thank you.

Thanks RnR.

Here is a method to use a router to block devices to access the internet, which should work for many users.

I decided to use my router to block internet access to the printer.  This can quickly and easily be reversed or modified.  It has 2 basic steps:

1 assign the printer a static IP address.

2. use the settings on the router to deny access to the internet to the static address.

I have a Cisco / Linksys router, but many brands & models have these basic features, which are accessed from EWS from the router (built-in web server), via a web browser.

HP support has the allocation of static IP address for printer more detailed instructions.

Here is the HP document a coating for my OJ Pro 8600 & some other models: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03781399/

It may be easier for most users to assign an HP printer a static address, using EWS of the printer rather than the screen of the printer.

Note: as a general rule, when you use a router to assign a static API for devices that the router would otherwise be assigned automatically (via 'DHCP'), the selected static address is outside the current range of addresses, the router can be used to assign addresses to devices on.  Many routers, that the current range of addresses, it can choose to assign DHCP addresses is visible in certain section / tab of the EWS router.

In my Cisco the current DHCP range appears under installation - basic setup - DHCP section:

"IP range: 192.168.2.60 to 192.168.2.109.

So I chose an address static printer off this (192.168.2.XXX).

You should write down & save the selected API, in the case where there is no problem getting later printer (shouldn't be, but...).

Assign the printer a static API did not affect access to its built-in Web server (for me).

Once the static method API is assigned & recognized (by the router), use the settings of the router to block this address from internet access.  In my Cisco, it's under "Access Restrictions."  (You may need to turn the printer on / off; possibly reboot some computers, for the new static to be recognized address.)  Here's how I did in the Cisco:

Log on to the router EWS (login by default & password is admin/admin.  You must always change router PASSWORD values by default, for security reasons - then your neighbor or your child can't hack your router remotely).

Go to the tab "Access Restrictions" or similar.
Click on "Edit PC" and put in the "MAC address" of the printer. (found in the network printer config / settings).

Save the MAC address settings.

Back on the homepage Internet access router, give this internet access policy (rule) a name.

Then click on "Access."
Check "Everyday" and "24 hours" for time, to block the IPa at all times.
Save the settings.

Now, the router will not allow this address to access the internet - for the specified hours, but the device (printer) can continue to communicate on the local network - all the time.

The same can be done for specific computers.  You want to block computers in kids' internet access on certain days / hours.

  • How to prevent the automatic updates

How to prevent the automatic updates which closes the window and restart the computer in Windows 7, Vista OP?  I'm usually right in the middle of something when this happens.

    Hello

change how to get updates to allow you to choose what you and when you install to stop it happening again

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial140.html

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them - if you select this option, Windows will download the updates on your computer, but not install them automatically. If you want to install updates, then you must install them manually. You should only select this option if you have a reason to not install updates automatically. Only advanced users should use this option.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them - if you select this option, you'll be alerted when there are new updates available for download and install. You can then choose to download and install the updates that you want. This option should really be reserved for people who know exactly which updates they need, or those who have little access to the Internet.

  • Help the clean installation of Windows 7 Pro and using the GPO to run automatic updates and restart all night

I am trying to solve a problem that will probably require a new installation of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The grace period ends in 3 days, and the next 30 days are final exams at the College. I have 2 licenses (and product key) of Windows 7 Pro, but my drive HARD goes wrong and I don't want to use MAK activation. I will be eventually to replace the disk, but is now bad timing.

If a reinstall is needed, I was going to ask if anyone knows how to set the strategy of perhaps a GPO where Windows is updated automatically in the background and after installing updates, 45 or 60 minutes, then restart. The goal would be to have a computer fully patched when I wake up in the morning.

    This is my plan:

Install Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit > Windows automatically updated and plug the Ethernet cable > define a GPO where the computer waiting for 45 to 60 minutes after installation of updates (so the msi may end in the background, and I do not interrupt the installation) > the PC will restart > more update swill be downloaded and installed > wait due to the policy of GPO before reboot > Reboot > do it until it's over. > wake up with a PC fully patched 7-9 hours later.

Is this a workable plan?, and if so, how do I define policies such as delay restarting, etc. to achieve?

The reset did not work. It would be a simple solution. I have a valid license, but I don't want to replace the HARD drive until after final exams are over, so I'll reinstall and activate. I try to achieve in the next 24 hours, so it doesn't keep me from my school work.  I must also support and will then replace my files.

Feel free to advanced used terminology. I have some experience.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Another question: should I install a security suite before all updates being installed more than 12 hours, or wait until later? What is the level of risk?

can receive email, but not able to send after the recent ('important') updates of windows have been installed.
also can't see videos on facebook because of the mistakes because of these updates.
I have the my windows update set to automatic and noticed these problems after an update has taken place. I did a system restore and everything worked fine. Needless to say the next day, the same thing. I even went to the windows update to manual setting, and it is always updated by itself. This made 4 consecutive days. now when I go to system restore, I don't even get the opportunity to go beyond 5 days! video errors on facebook tell me that "the video is unavailable" and "video has been deleted or is not visible because of the privacy settings. I also noticed that most installed updates are updates to windows security. and my windows update seems to be popping up constantly telling me ago over updates to install.

    Hi Unhappy72,

I'm sorry that you are still facing the same problem. I'll be more than happy to help you.

    I have a few questions:

    (a) what version of IE are you using?

    (b) has been going through the steps to reset Internet explorer?

    (c) you have any version of Flash Player on your system?

You can try to update the version of Flash Player for videos.

To do this all first you need to uninstall and then go ahead and download the latest version and install it.

To uninstall the application follow the steps given below:

    1. open programs and features by clicking on the Start button, click Control Panel, clicking programs, and then clicking programs and features.

    2. Select a program, and then click Uninstall. Some programs include the ability to modify or repair the program in addition to uninstall, but many simply offer the option uninstall. To change a program, click change or repair. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

For more information, please visit the below given link:

    Uninstall or change a program

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/uninstall-or-change-a-program

You can also check if the connection parameters are set by default.

Make follow them the steps below:

    1. open Internet Explorer.

    2. press the Alt key on your keyboard for the file menu if it is not already there.

    3. go to tools, click on Internet Options.

    5. at the bottom of the page, it will be a local network settings tab, click on this.

    6. check if automatic detect settings is enabled in the box, if it isn't what to choose.

    7. close all Internet Explorer Windows and reopen and check if the problem persists.

This should solve your problem of not being able to send emails.

You can also try to clean boot your system and then try to play the videos. This will let us know if the background services interferes with the proper functioning of your system.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

The steps to perform a clean boot are given below:

1 log on to the computer using an account with administrator rights

    2. click on start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue

    3. on the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)

    4. on the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all

Note: Following this step lets services Microsoft continue to run. These services include networking, Plug-and-Play, record of events, error reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you can permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use with existing restore points system restore utility

Once you have disabled all services that you can check if you are able to play the videos. If so, you can try the divide and conquer method to find what service exactly the origin of the problem. For those who follow the below given link:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    2. on the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.

    3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart

Alternatively, you can try to disable the modules such that some add-ons can be a problem while browsing through the internet.

To disable the modules follow the below given steps:

  • Laptop crashes / freezes after automatic update and reboot yesterday evening

I left my laptop on last night and when I woke up this morning, it was restarted.  I assumed that an update was downloaded and installed during the night, as I put it in place for auto Windows Installer updated to date.  When I tried to stop, would not display the start menu, then I got the message that windows Explorer has stopped working and I got the info to send to Microsoft dialog box.  I chose to send information about the problem, but then I got a message that the error report had stopped working, I wanted to send information to Microsoft... nothing has worked right after that.  The arrow of the mouse move but no program would go, and I couldn't access the start menu to stop.  I tried Ctrl/alt/del but nothing happened.

I forced a restart and booted in safe mode.  I did a system restore to a point marked as an update of windows at 03:00 this morning.  The laptop booted up normally after that; I opened and closed some programs without any problem, so I thought that the problem has been resolved.

I was using the laptop at school (I'm a teacher) and everything was fine until I tried to close Word.  He hung up and I couldn't do anything else.  Yet once, mouse move but nothing else has worked, and I couldn't access the Task Manager.

I did a system restore to the point where I have installed several updates yesterday afternoon.  Has not fixed the problem.  I did a last restoration to a regular point since the day before yesterday... still has not fixed the problem.  I am now running my AVG Anti-virus in safemode, but he still found nothing.

I need help!  I have a HP laptop which is one year (and only 2 weeks after the end of the one year warranty) and I am running Vista with Office XP.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think it's fixed... fingers crossed.

After that start above safe mode, I have restarted in normal mode in order to save what I could and uninstalled a few things.  In the process, I found the place to uninstall windows updates.  There were two listed as installed in 2010 - one is an update of windows and the other was a security update.  I uninstalled both.  I was using my computer all the rest of that day and had no more problems.  I do not know what updates, I uninstalled, but one or both must have caused the problem.  I wish I knew of to do it sooner, but honestly, I think that to do a system restore would be uninstall updates added from this point.  I know better now and I have disabled the automatic updates, so I hope that this will not happen.  Thanks for your help, even if it wasn't what ended up working :)
