XP Home Edition limited question user account windows updates.

Is windows assume update in limited user accounts?  This is not to do it for me.   When you are logged as long as limited user, I can only run windows updates with ' run as ' administrative rights and windows updates will be download but do not settle.  I have to log on to the administrator user account to install the updates.  Therefore, it seems that for individuals (notwithstanding a technical and complicated solution) you must be connected to the computer account admin to install windows updates.  Is this correct?  Thank you.

As for the specific error I was getting when you try to manually run windows update in LUA, where I could download but not, the error was "Windows could not install the following update with error 0x8024200e'

It isn't the mistake that we would expect to see if the user account was not permission to install updates (for example, 0x8007F002), especially in WinXP Home Edition.

This gives a shot:

1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. double-click on the file that you saved in #1 above to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

4. open IE (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run the difficulty mode and then AGGRESSIVE and DEFAULT. [1]

5. restart & test.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1] you must be aware that the difficulty operating in AGGRESSIVE mode will remove your history of update (to the Windows Update Web site), but will not affect the updates listed in Add/Remove programs.
  • Unable to access updates for windows xp home edition (sp3) via "Fix - it", Windows Update or Microsoft Update and Windows Update
    Hello
    I have download a new download "Fix - it"; all the convenience of work with the exception of "Windows Update".  Also I went through self-help suggestions in "go-microsoft", but nothing helped.  I also tried the "cmd" method (i.e.: start, run, cmd and then copy and paste each .dll for windows update); 1 a .dll could not be found, and two other 2 couldn't register.  After Windows Update represented existing 'cmd' method, I then, well my system recognized the appropriate software update and allowed me to press the 'Express' butotn to an update of high priority for installation (e.g.: Cumulative Security Update for Windows XP...) Sorry, but I forgot the KB #), unfortunately, he could not install, then I ran Windows Update again and pressed the 'Custom' button and three 3 software update optional appeared, as well as an XP update.  Once again, all the selected custom updates has not installed.  I am therefore at a disadvantage as to how I can access necessary security updates for my computer and would appreciate contact me promptly to address this urgent problem.  Thank you much in advance - arldarl
    Hello Tommy.
    Thanks for sharing the information above to remedy my Windows Update and please accept my apologies for my being too general with my question.
    After many hours of running the programs above, SuperAntivirus found 1 an Adware and 55 Tracking Cookies; MalwareBytes found 1 1 that a horse of Troy, and EsET found Trojan horse more!  My computer is vulnerable, so 'thank you '... I would never have known to load/run these particular l, and nor would I knew I had these TAPI problems in my computer.
    After several attempts of installing/re-installing 'Fix - it' (i.e.: deletion of multiple copies associated with my Microsoft Online ID), I was unable to make progress, so I ended up check my Services and found BITS to be set up as 'Network' instead of 'Local '.  I made this change, Windows Update, and the Cumulative Update has began to download - finally!
    I suspect that any of your suggestions, and my little trick got Windows Update to work?
    Thanks a lot a lot - arldarl
    I upgraded my card mother cpu ram and hard drive. I reinstalled windows xp home edition has got all of the updates. After 9 latest updates download and installtion was going well until I rebooted the computer and go to page window showing all the icons that I get a blue screen and the computer restarts its self and does not stop. How can this be corrected?
    Hi KevinRy,
    Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!
    Unplug all external devices.
    Try to start in safe mode. If you can start in safe mode, and then do a system restore to restore the computer to an earlier point in time.
    Change the recovery settings to disable automatic reboot, if you are able to boot up to the desktop computer:
    1.
    Right-click my computerand then click Properties.
    2.
    Click the Advanced tab.
    3.
    Under Startup and recovery, click settings to open the Startup and recovery dialog box.
    4.
    Clear the automatically restart check box, and then click OK many times necessary.
    5.
    Restart your computer so that the settings take effect.
    Now, when you are going to close and a fatal error occurs, you will see at least and it won't cause an automatic restart.
    Please reply back with the error message you get because it helps us to resolve the error.
    Kind regards
    Amal-Microsoft Support.
  • All user accounts Windows XPrestricted open all of a sudden 'Map network drive' by clicking on the desktop and the "research" by clicking on any folder
    Hello
    you have a problem with my Windows laptop that left me speechless.
    I would really appreciate if someone could provide a solution or any ideas where to start fixing this, as I get close to return to the previous backup full system, but reluctant to do so as I have never done it before so I'm worried if it really works as supposed (Macrium and Ping).
    1. description of the problem
    All users of Windows XP (SP3) restricted accounts open all of a sudden 'Map network drive' by clicking on the desktop and the "research" by clicking on any folder, including My Documents.
    However, all accounts administrator work as before and also user accounts work like so usual, they are included in the Administrators group, with respect to the clicks of the workstation and records.
    In addition, the correct icons for 'Drive' and 'Record' are visible when connected as long as administrator but lacking when logged as long as user restricted when you check the file associations by "open the folder and then click on Folder Options in the Tools menu.» Click the registry file types list. »
    2 solution unsuccessful attempts
    2. google and tried the solution to manually change the registry entries from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321186
    "
    Start the editor of the register (Regedt32.exe).
    Look for, and then click the default value under the following registry keys if this problem occurs with folders:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
    If this problem occurs with drives:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
    Click on edit in the Edit menu.
    Type 0 in the value data box, and then click OK.
    Exit the registry editor.
    "
    (Fixit associated meanings has also not working for some reason, says that the Windows Installer does not run, don't know if the same problem...)
    2B. and then also tried the fix "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" at http://blog.chron.com/helpline/2005/10/double-click-opens-search-instead-of-folder/.
    After these steps, the registry under "Drive" and "Directory" information are as attaché at the end read somewhere there should be a "find" under lock and key, as I have, but don't know if the subkeys under 'Search' are what causes weird behavior.
    If anyone knows and could provide what the values for the registry values must be in a system that works, would be nice to compare to possible problems.
    Unsuccessfully, with what precedes, to solve the problem, but noticed through that:
    2 c. When you are logged in as administrator, I am able to see and modify the registry keys concerned with regedit, considering that when logged in as a regular user, I get an error that translates roughly as "the key could not be opened [consultation]?.» Error in opening the key. "for"Default icon"and subkeys 'shell' to 'Drive' and some subkeys under"shellex ".
    Oddly enough, this is also the case even if I "Run with" regedit as a user belonging to the Administrators group when logged in as a limited user.  Could be the mechanism of Windows registry access.
    Noticed that the small group 'Users' did not have access to "Drive". Grant read access, even as the "directory" and other registry keys next to them, for "users".
    Now see the values of registry as a limited user, but the problem persists. Do you really know what to try next, after spending hours Googling for answers.
    3 computer laptop environment and other factors
    3. don't know if it's related, but perhaps that coincides the time and the possible reason of sage:
    I had the problem two days ago described in "account Administor doesn't have access to some files and registry entries" to http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/XP/Q_27415496.html.
    Zone alarm free firewall prevented changing the key of HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microdsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
    Which was fixed as in the article above tweaking of Zonealarm settings so that changes are allowed.
    3. the environment of the laptop:
    Acer Travelmate 8204 laptop
    Windows XP SP3 with virtually all updates of installed Microsoft.
    Recent issues (related?) with the .NET Framework 4 updates and the repair facility. FixIt against MS to install MS Update and the Application works and reveals no problems, but the settings from-> Panel-> Add or Remove Applications said that it cannot change or delete NET Framework 4.
    ZoneAlarm Free Firewall version: 11.0.000.057, prevented possible culprit get earlier access to the registry, uninstall?
    Norton Antivirus version recently installed 20.3.1.22, possibly in conflict with ZA or bug?
    content 'Repertoire' 3 c registry key.
    It seems that I managed to solve the problem on my own. Did two things:
    1 set the registry keys determine programs associated objects 'Répertoire', 'Drive' and 'File' to the default values by using the settings found here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\
    2. If you want to have permissions for group 'Users' to read all these keys in the registry. For some reason any access worked only partly for standard users.
    Not sure who finally solved this problem, but after I had finished 1. and 2. for the purpose of 'Record', by clicking on 'My computer' and any folder works normally for all users of the computer.
    I suspect that some recent installation of program which adds actions associated with these objects messed up the registry. Suspects are Norton Antivirus and dbPowerAmp.
    Thanks for the suggestions for this problem!
  • I can't create a new user account (Windows 7): the user profile service service has no logon
    I tried to create a new user account, but I get the following error when I try to open a session with him:
    the user profile service service has no logon
    Until I leave than anything more I will add that I activated the hidden administrator account and this is the account I use to create a new standard user account.
    Most of the patches for this issue are due to the fact that delete manually a user account does not remove the registry key that are associated, and you are required to go to the next section of the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENTVERSION\PROFILELIST
    and delete the key associated with the user account to be deleted.
    This fix IS NOT help, because whenever I try to create a new user, Windows doesn't bother creating a registry key to the new user.  The new user account appears in the account management window.  If I right click ondesktop and select Properties, then the settings , select the Advanced tab and click settingsunder USER PROFILES, the new account appears not here no more.
    It is a huge problem.  I have other people who use this laptop and I don't want to use my login information, or the guest account.  I'm not editing the registry just to make a new account.
    Please tell me there is a fix for this that works.  Windows 7 was not free, and this kind of problem is very frustrating for the premium software.
    Thanks - this is the only tip that help me to find the solution to this problem.
    Two files in the folder C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live could not be copied without administrator privileges.  This caused the connection in the attempt fail for all newly created user accounts.  The files are:
    C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Bici\Bici1_00.sqm
    and
    C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\SqmApi\SqmData720896_00.sqm
    I've added the read permission for all users in these two files and retried the logon.  The opening of session proceeded set up initial user and filled perfectly.  Probably, this problem started when I installed Windows Live Messenger which is the only Windows Live application, I installed.
    Other important in your message board was to check the event log which stressed the two files which could not copy.  Otherwise provided in WARNING messages immediately preceded files event log error message indicates that the profile service could not connect.
  • User account Windows 7 and security - my administrator account is now a guest account
    I seem to have a complex problem, regarding Windows 7 Professional, running on a Toshiba laptop.
    I recently changed my C: drive security features to make the files more accessible to my PC desk top of the page. I went through the process to allow the authorization: Windows Explorer, Driver C:, properties, security, group or user names:
    I selected my user account, and then you click on change. I then highlighted my name of user account and when permissions for authenticated users box below and clicked under the column allow "full control". The system when by a long time to change the permissions.
    Today, I tried to access the files on my laptop on my desk, all seemed very well! I was able to copy files back from both sides through my network. However, today, I noticed that my user account has become a guest account, while he was an administrator account. My administrator account is no longer visible.
    I tried the various patches available online in safe mode. Nothing helps.
    When I start my laptop in safe mode, I see only my administrator account and not my user account. When I start my laptop computer in normal mode, I see that my user account and not my administrator account. My account user has full administrative rights before that.
    How can I get my a new administrator account user account?
    Please clarify these aspects:
    1 you are referring to an administrator account.  There really the administrator username?  If so, this is the built-in Administrator account.
    2. Why do you say that your account is a guest account?  If you go into Control Panel, [view by - small icons, if necessary], user accounts is your normal account appear as a Standard user account?  That at least seems logical, the account guest is something very specific.
    - - - - - - - - - - - -
    If my assumptions were correct then
    A reboot in safe mode and use of the built-in Administrator account to create a new Admin-level account.  Password protect and write the password somewhere down or create a password reset disk.
    B connect to the new account Admin to test is everything is OK.
    C use where the other account to edit your account usual back to being an Admin-level account.  Then sign in to ensure that it works correctly. Restart normally [not in safe mode].
    D disable the built-in Administrator account if it appears in the Control Panel, [view by - small icons, if necessary], user accounts, Manage another account.  I don't think it will be.
    E if you want to check out so you can now reboot into safe mode, and the built-in administrator will be gone from here too.  It appears automatically in safe mode if no other Admin account exists in the system.
    - - - - - - - - - - - -
    On the procedure that started it all off, the permissions change.  Windows does not expect this large-scale change and I invite you to reinstall Windows, since you do not know in what condition the system is now in - Windows probably does not know either.
  • Cannot create new or modify existing user accounts Windows 7 Ultimate
    I login as administrator, or in my own account (Administrator).
    Control Panel, user accounts, manage another account... try creating a new account, give it a name, select Standard or Administator... system proceeds to "Choose an account you would like to change" and goes no further.  Does not create a new account; It is there with an empty box as if he's waiting for me to make a choice.  The system is not inadmissible or hanging, and works fine otherwise.  I tried to experiment with different levels of UAC, but that makes no difference.  Manage another account takes me directly on the same screen, with the same behavior.
    Any suggestions?  THX...
    I have the same problem with my windows 7 ultimate, and I was wondering if you have found a way to fix without reloading windows?
    You will get much more attention with a position of your choice instead of add your question to a stale thread that is now two years old.
