XP Service Pack 3, worried about losing everything on my hard drive

How much risk is to update with Service Pack 3? I had heard of some cases of losing everything on the hard drive after doing this update.

See reply Palcouk, but let me add that the risk of * not * the upgrade
SP3 is superior.

  • Confused about the capacity of the HARD drive on my new Equium L350

I'm rather confused (normal state) about the capacity of my hard disk. This is supposed to be 120 GB but... On 'My computer', it shows that I have 23 GB of 55.7 left GB on Vista C and 49.8 54.5 on E of data that is delivered to about 110 GB.

I'm already about 10 GB missing but maybe that is taken up with hidden files. More worrying is that I have so little space on Vista C. Can I save files on the data partition, or is that a no-no? So far, everything I've loaded on it goes into Vista C.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    I agree with InvaderZim.

But there should also be another reason why the two partitions of HARD drive are smaller than the whole HARD disk.

I assume you are using the Vista operating system.
Vista uses hidden for some files from recovery partition.
If you check the Disk Manager, and you should see all available on your HARD disk partitions.

  • He had to do something as an fdisk to wipe everything on my hard drive

I installed a new hard drive in the computer of my son a couple of days.  The installation included a ton of windows updates Windows XP Pro.  Everything worked very well this night the next morning, I decided to start the computer one last time before I gave it back to my son.  After I started it, I noticed there was another update to install.  This is the SP 3.  After that I installed and don't reboot, I went into the Device Manager just to check things out and found a few issues that I don't think were there before the SP 3 update.  Under "Other devices", he showed problems with a PCI device, a Serial Bus and a USB controller.

The computer is a Dell E521 and it came with Vista installed on it.  My son wanted to get the hard drive replaced so he could destroy it and he wanted to installed XP because he thinks, that it will sell faster with XP.

I tried to do a repair of XP, which does not solve the problem, and I tried to find the drivers for the PCI device, bus series and the download site controller driver Dell, but have no way to know what drivers will fix the problems and I spent a ton of time on the web, trying to find the drivers with no luck , so I decided that the easy way is to do a Fdisk.  However, after some research, I discovered that you can't do a Fdisk with XP.

Bottom Line: Someone can tell me how to wipe the hard drive and reinstall XP or can someone give me a link that has the necessary steps to wipe the hard drive and reinstall XP?

    Thank you.

  • Need to retrieve the BONES but do not have the habit of losing data on the HARD drive

    Dear all!

For long time now, I tried to disable a Trojan horse or a worm, on my Windows XP Home (Home!) i.e. get rid of the cftmon_.exe, when I decided to follow the instructions from Symantec and pieces manually deleted from the register, I guess she was part USERINIT (turn off the system before restore and put on after the deletion).

It can be as well as I did not right, something after the fact that I have would be to end the session at the time the logon process has started. This is relatively known issue here, with different options.

-J' need to keep the data on two HARD drives.
    -I have no other partitions.
-I don't know what I've got on one of them, which I could use to free space Recovery Expert mode.

    a. the fact that I want to take the option with Toshiba, which is Expert mode (http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2513&tstart=125) as a last recovery, DVDs on

    b. I have trouble with the installation of the Recovery Console (with Windows XP (Professional!) original CD, 'R' for 'fix), but I would get the message "Setup has not found hard disk units installed in your computer"...
I understand that I would need to install the driver RAID (http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=20093&messageID=73758) but I'm afraid that this may delete the data on the disc.

    My questions are the following:

1 install the RAID driver (downloaded from the Toshiba off site web http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/updates/raid-drv/raid-drv-qog20-xp-1380.zip and installed on the floppy drive I guess) so we hope to install the Recovery Console, and do the rest of the work, make data disappear my 2 (remove) HARD drives?

    2. If I use Toshiba Recovery DVD, Expert mode that is finally what is the size of partition should be recorded for the mirror on the half vacuum 1.HDD?, should I partition 2 HDD, after it backup and count data will be lost? Choose any setings special during the process, apart from those mentioned in the link above? What should I do after wards? The registry damaged when you logged in and how can I build? I will be able to use personal and archive data from Microsoft Outlook?

    3. is there a alternative with UBCD4Win and UBCD? What is the best? What is the procedure of after the start of the CD after reboot? How to copy/repair the userinit files?

I'm sorry for the load of information, but I am pretty stuck. All the necessary data for my normal life are buried here!

A big thank you JohnnyS, tw, Quad, Eldorado and many others!

    See you soon!

    Hi friend

I would like to respond on comments like yours, it s a good exercise for my work and my s really cool to have a few topics which will help all the people here.

JohnnyS is a friend of mine who works with me at our office and we talked a bit about your problem.
If his opinion is to use the UBCD4Win and work with this option.

    The advice from him were:

Take a USB - HDD enclosure and put a disk in it and start with UBCD4Win. Copy any important data in a folder on the external HARD drive, then remove the uneeded data on this subject. Only important data!
Make a backup of your data on the external hard drive for two HDD´s I hope that you have enough free space.

Format the drive in your machine and get it back. Install the system as usual on your first HARD drive.
    Then put the data anywhere.

So I don't know if I have it just ask, a little more explanation would be useful. I think that this is a long thread. ;)

    Welcome them

  • HP dv6-1360us Question about the location of the hard drive

    Hello

I was wondering if someone could help me by telling me that if there is a way to know how many slots hard drive there in my computer laptop dv6-1360us.

I'll probably buy a player in solid state, and I would use it as a boot drive and keep the original hard drive as storage only. Is this possible?

    Thanks in advance,

    D.

Here are the specifications of your HP Pavilion dv6-1360us Entertainment Notebook computer. Here is the list of HP Pavilion dv6 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service of Guide under "Manuals", but it seems to be incorrect for your computer. This HP Pavilion dv6 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide lists at least the correct CPU series for your model. According to this manual, your computer supports a hard drive only (Chptr 1, Pg 4 Description of the product).

    Try to do a repair installation;
    1. Insert the DVD of Windows 7
    2. restart your computer
    3. When asked if you want to boot from your DVD player, do it.
    4. Select your language, click Next.
    5. click on "repair your computer".
    6. Select the operating system you want to repair.

will I lose my files and stored data when I update from windows 7 to windows 8?

There is no particular risk to lose anything, if you do an upgrade, rather than a new installation, and if you do it right.

    * However *, whenever make you a leap like an upgrade from one version of Windows to another, there is always a risk. Things * can * fool you. So before I do, you should be sure you have a current backup on external support of all important files for you.

And another point. Even if you do not upgrade, it is * always * a risk of losing. So you should be sure you have a current backup on external support of all important files for you * all * time, not just in the moment it takes important steps.
