You must format the drive until you can use it!

Hello.. can someone help me please...

I have Windows vista... I have an extra external HARD drive... Every time there is an upgrade of vista I can't access my external hard drive, I click Open, he said: "you need to format the disk in E: drive before you can use it, you want to format?"

Ok.. It's something to do with permissions I have solved this a coupke times before fixing it then setting a restore point, unfortunately my restore point will not do after an another upgrade of vista/update...

How to reset the permissions so that I can access all my music, images, and documents stored on my external hard drive and... What can I do to stop future updates change my settings and stop my access to my external hard drive?

Thanks in advance, ian.

Gringy,
Here is an article with detailed steps to take to solve the problem of permissions permanently.  http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/949608 this involves advanced enough procedures so if this isn't something you feel comfortable with that you get assistance to do this process.

Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk.

  • The SD card no longer works. "You must format the disk before you can use it"

I have a dv8000t supplied with XP.  I've upgraded to Vista 32, and after the driver updates and adding the SMCISEnable key in the registry, the SD card reader has worked well.

Now when I try to use the SD cards, it is said: "you must format the drive until you can use it" as an error message.  I tried the SD cards on other computers, and they work, so I know that is only the HP dv8000t problem. This is perhaps the result of a Windows Service Pack or other update?  I have Vista Service Pack 2.

    Any ideas?  Thank you.

    Hello muhammad.

Before you do anything with this player, you can search online for some data recovery utilities so that you can try to recover your data.

What operating system do you use?

Have you tried running chkdsk on the drive?

    Let us know.

  • External hard drive not detected with the error: "You must format the disk in the J: drive until you can use it."

    Hello

I have an external hard drive to work perfectly. I'm back from vacation, and it does not appear under "My Computer". It appears under "Devices and printers", however. This is a link to a screencap of Device Manager: http://i.gyazo.com/9e91e1d71ed32c55dba0419e79b499d5.png

The device in question is that of J:, and it says here that he has 100% free space, that worries me, because he had only 50 GB of free space when I used the latter. After that I open the disk management, I get a pop up message saying: "You must format the disk in the J: drive until you can use it."

How can I get my hard drive appears again?

    Thank you

    Hi Arman,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I would say you can remove the drive letter M: using disk management and assign a different drive for the drive letter and check if it helps you to solve the problem and if the drive works very well.

To change the drive letter in disk management follow the steps below:

    a. open computer by clicking the Start> Control Panel > system and security> Administrative Tools > computer management. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    (b) in the left pane, click disk management.

    c. click the drive that you want to change and then click change drive letter and paths.

    d. do one of the following:

    • For letter an if it has not already received, click Add, click the letter you want to use and then click OK.
    • To change a drive letter, click change, click assign the following drive letter, click the letter you want to use, and then click OK.
    • To remove a drive letter, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to remove.

    Additional information:

Change, add, or remove a drive letter

In addition, please refer to the steps posted by NakulShridhar responded on October 14, 2011 in the following thread and check if this can help:

    Warning:
Running chkdsk on the drive if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data can be lost.

  • USB Flash Drive gives the error "you must format the disk in drive E, before you can use it"

I just plugged my USB pen and a message pops up saying: "you need to format the disk in drive E, until you can use" I was wondering if and how I can solve this problem? Can anyone help? Sam
    * original title - USB pen problem *.

    Hi samanthaGibbons,

What is the make and model of your USB Flash drive?

The USB Flash drive works in any other computer?

It might be a problem with the drive itself, or it may need to be formatted.

I suggest you check out the website of the manufacturer for possible troubleshooting or know how to reformat the disk, if necessary.

    I hope this helps!

  • "You must format the disk in drive J: before you can use it"

Says error message "You must format the disk in drive J: before that you can use" I have a removable USB storage drive that I always connected to my computer whenever I have download movies save disk space on my computer.  Now, he wants me to format this disk storage.  Also, where he used to qualify this drive as "Removable disk", it is not labeled as Local J: drive. I don't want to format this drive because it erases all my files and folders on removable USB storage drive.  Please help me.

    I had the same problem.
And I have a solution for you... The problem is that when you plug in your HD first, Windows 7 install your hard drive and associate it with only this USB port (whether the USB port "4") If you want to use (HD) again, you need to plug it into the same USB port (USB port '4'), where it was first installed. It's stupid! But that's how it worked with my HD.

Try all USB ports you have on your PC.

    Good luck.

Hope this has been helpful. : D

PS: the same problem is with all the damage that connect you to your pc.

    Hello

I took it off wile, he played the song, and since then, I have try to open a dialog box open and said you need to format the hard disk: X before you can use I can't format it because I'll lose my data fields, important documents of songs picters.
If anyone can help me with it please
    Thank you in advance.

Because you don't properly stop the disc before removing it, you burned her FAT (File Allocation Table that each player has). Your files are still there, but they can only be read by the 'normal' software... think of a hard drive as a subdivision... formatting a disk (any drive) is like the ranking of all sectors which will be the roads and determine where the accommodation structures (folders) can be placed. When a fat gets grilled, all the rankings and roads disappeared suddenly... but the housing is still there. Recovery software puts the ranking and roads back.

Is there a software that I used to be called "Rescue" that worked fine on the old disk to FAT32. Costs $60 but it was cheaper than $1000 than for a customer who had sprayed a server hard drive (and replaced their backup before calling me, long story, lesson learned client and I learned the value of disaster planning... but I digress), I was at another time.

Good luck!! Let us know what you find / use / work... so that you can save we / you... because it will never happen.

  • How can I download a recordable CD that has already a few files on it without the software you want to format the drive first!

I was able to do this on my XP desktop but it crashed and now I use my 64 bit Vista laptop.  There must be a way that I don't see.

Sorry, but your reply ignores the problem that is the threat to format the disk and erase the existing content if you download a file on this disk. Finally, I discovered that the solution was disguised by the ambiguity of the software.  If you choose "mastered" it of no problem even if the explanation of 'controlled' looks that would destroy the capacity of the disk to receive or delete files "under control" and future - only formats the drive before you download a file on it! Equal stupidity on my part and the author of the software.

  • "You have to format the drive" error after the use of USMT through an Esata cable

My company migrate to Win 7. We use the USMT to capture state powered hard drives Lacie user, putting on our image of Windows 7, then restore the capture user. However, the other day I was in a laptop computer with an Esata port, so I used it on the usb port. Then when I tried to boot from the disk and mount the image, he said "No BONES on the disc" so I went back in windows was watching the drive to make sure it still worked and, all the user data was their. Then I put on the side, fell on the image from another drive (wipe and load method) but when I went to restore from the first disc "you must format the disk to use" you will see. and it appears on each computer in the plug in.

This happened also another technology that happened to try Esata instead of USB. This is a nightmare that could cost me my job if I don't get figured out. I am running facilitated us data recovery Assistant, who finds some 9 500 files on the disk, but it will take 22 hours to complete. And I think that he has a simple solution, I don't see. I think that the Esata some how made specific to this laptop drive at the time.

Any suggestions or responses are greatly apperciated.

  • You can use an external hard drive with the Mac Mini?

I've seen videos that say that we cannot increase the ram on a min of Mac, but I'm curious if this works like an ordinary computer, if we can attach an external hard drive to store some of the memory to free up space. Sorry if this is something stupid just need to know what I can do with it.

You can use an external hard drive to boot and run with any Mac. Its not going to improve or replace your ram. If you use a mechanical hard drive in any Mac then help and boot from an external drive, especially if it's a SSD will be significantly faster.
