"Your startup disk is almost full.

I have a 13-inch, mid 2010, Macbook Pro with a Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz processor and 8 GB of RAM, running the Mavericks.

Recently, this message, "Startup disk is almost full," began to appear. I searched google but have not found a solution. I think my situation is unusual because I have more than 65 GB of available disk space.

Does anyone know why I could receive this message despite his sufficient available disk space?

  • Can not find why the startup disk is almost full

I got the message "Boot disk almost full" and began to go through the folders. I did an EEG info on my user folder and it says 240gig, my drive is only 250 gig. But when I go through each subfolder that I can't find anything even close to that of grand. I deleted everything that I don't need but can't find where this huge amount of file space is used.

Simple answer - don't count on the Finder.

The Finder hides just pieces of the file system that are not relevant for most users.

When there is only a big gap between what the OS reports is used (240GB) and what you see in the Finder, is most often due to some errant logging process that fills the system logs, with mostly useless data.

You can view the logs (and other 'hidden' data) using the Finder go-> go to folder... menu and entering: / var

You can also use /Applications/Utilities/Console.app to view the logs to see if you can identify what process is at fault.

  • I get a message saying startup disk is almost full and to delete files. How can I go about it?

I have a macbook air and a message comes up saying that my boot drive is almost full and delete files to make more space. What files and where? Thank you.

Buy an external hard drive if you do not already have one and migrate personal files, things like documents, music, photos, videos, stuff like that.  Once they are on the external hard drive, delete them from your computer.  You would remove them the same way you would remove any other thing - click it, right-click, select "Move to trash."  Delete nothing however, until you have moved to an external drive.  If you don't save a copy somewhere, once you remove them, it's over and you can't get it back.

To understand what that other things that can be deleted are go up --> about this Mac--> storage.  This will tell you how many you have on your hard drive right now.  Post here a screenshot of it.

Hi Taylorlaura, if you can use your Mac then move your own files of data on another drive, until you do about 50 GB of space.

OS x: what is 'other' space about this Mac? -Apple Support

Then download and run Omni DiskSweeper. It can show you the exact size and location of all your files. It will be the inventory of your disc from files that occupy more space. It can also give you a fairer read disk space than the Finder or storage tab of the about this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But beware, some items may be important for your system.

  • Error message Microsoft Word "Word could not create the work file. Check the amount of disk space on your startup disk. »

I have a MacBook Pro, retina 13inch OS X el Capitan Version 10.11.1 with 16 GB of memory. It's brand new and I have recently installed Microsoft Word/Powerpoint etc. a disc that I bought a few years to my previous MacBook. It seems to work very well, but whenever I want to open a word document a message comes up saying "Word could not create the work file. Check the amount of disk space on your startup disk '. However, once I click 'OK' this message disappears and my word file opens without a problem. I have 16 GB of memory on this laptop and it's new I have not reached anywhere near the maximum amount of storage so I'm puzzled as to what this message means. How can I avoid that this message popping up everytime I open Microsoft Word? Any help would be appreciated!

This has nothing to do with memory - it's the SSD. Word tries to create a temporary file to use as a backup if the program crashes while you are working. First, run the Microsoft Update program to see if there are updates you have missed. Second, Microsoft currently supports only versions 2011 and 2016, so if yours is older, you should consider the upgrade. Thirdly, I suspect that the temporary file is not get created so that you have fewer cancellations (maybe any) and that if the program crashes you have to restore.

    Hello:

It is normal that the partition recovery disk is almost full, and you should never store other files on it.

The partion made just large enough to hold recovery files.

If you have stored files on the recovery partition, I recommend that move you elsewhere.

I tried several times to re - open Photoshop CC but within 2 seconds it crashes when loading. I then decided to upgrade to the 2014 version, update. This only happens when I'am connected under "other user account" as I had been when the accident happened first and not as an administrator. I purged the cache, more space for performance, etc. in Admin mode, I ran permission repair in public services, but when I change the user account, photoshop crashes with seconds loading. As you can already read in your crash report - the crash has little to do with Photoshop and everything to do with your Nik/Google SelectiveTool plugin.

Disable this plugin and contact Nik/Google for an update that fixes bugs in this plugin.

  • VMWare Fusion makes a break from the virtual machine because the disk is almost full.

Is I myself am sitting at my computer this morning, I saw a message that says the guest system Windows XP Pro on my Mac Mini has been suspended.  Here is the message:

"VMware Fusion has suspended this virtual machine because the disk on which the virtual machine is stored is almost full."

I can't find a way to shut down Windows to resize hard disk space allocation.  I tried the Virtual Machine menu, but all the shut down/put off the power points are grayed out.

    Any ideas out there?

    You must read the message!

BTW if force you the VM to the bottom you may corrupt the virtual system hard disk and or the VHD file and you need to just do as the message says and free up space on the OS X hard disk even if you temporarily move a few things on an external hard drive so that you can then reactivate the Virtual Machine and continue on the it.

  • Repair your startup disk Bootcamp disappearing after you create the new partition

. After some research, I found that it was the way forward to create a separate partition, and so I did another partition.

I didn't know it would affect my Windows partition that I thought it was completely different.

So now, when I start it up, there is no option to start with Windows. But when I boot the Mac and select Startup disk, it displays Boot Camp is still there, and all my files etc. are still there.

I tried to create one separate partition (other than Bootcamp). After that its done and I started my computer, I found that the option to boot Windows (Bootcamp startup disk) has disappeared. But I still see boot camp Mac files. Any solution for this? Thank you.

(I tried to find this solution on the discussion Forum, and I found: repair Boot Camp after having created the new partition, however, I'm not able to follow these instructions. any help would be appreciated)

  • ProBook 650 G1, C disk is almost full

Bought this ProBook, with SSD, because I specifically wanted a SSD and Windows 7.
I thought that 128 GB should be enough to run Windows and some of my graphics software, but when I start the computer I noticed that on the 128 GB a little more than 100 GB has been filled with pre-installed software, much of it to the high HP stuff.

I only installed Adobe CS6, Lightroom 5 and some really light stuff, and I'm running everything on external drives. But with updates of Windows and HP software has filled my C drive and I am now looking at only 6 GB of free space.

Most of the HP stuff I have no idea what he's doing, and frankly, I don't really know if I need it.
Can someone tell me which software I can safely remove and which is absolutely necessary to make the system work?

It is a bit misleading to buy a computer with 128 GB SSD only to find nearly complete with preinstalled software.

    Thanks in advance!

    Arno

    Hi ArnoEnzo,

To get your question more exposure I suggest you post in the trade forums since it is a commercial product. You can do it at Business Forum.

If I were you I look at my Control Panel programs and features and see which programs are installed. The operating system and HP don't account for 4 GB and that's being generous. You have installed movies or games?

    Thank you.

  • My hard disk is almost full. What should I do?

I have a Compaq laptop with a 250 GB hard drive. The computer is about 6 years old. Last week, I started to have messages that I was low on memory. I checked and my C drive showed that about 3 GB left. I have a drive external rebit who manages my backup. No backup on the drive C. I also have an external hard drive of 3 t. I thought stupidly that if I was short on space, it would pass to the Seagate.  Seagate, I called and they told me that I have to manually move the programs. They helped me get around a lot of programs in the drive of 3 t. I went to Control Panel then uninstalled unused programs. All together, I did not open a lot of space. I used CC Cleaner, more open space. Now I'm doing a disk defragmentation. and my C drive has about 6 GB of space. Is there something I can do? What could be eating space? I'm semi computer and spastic and need help. Thank you very much.
