  After being a user of Windows Mobile for years and many devices, I stepped and passed to the tower. There are things that I love most about it and some of the things that I miss terribly. One of the things I miss is having read a message in Outlook, I don't want to be marked as read on the device.  The only way I can get it to work is to choose "Reconcile now" on the device and then all syncs well.  The weird part is that if I read something on the device, it will be immediately marked as read in Outlook without having to choose "Reconcile now".  I've seen a few posts about this, but none that really explain why it would be designed that way.  I hope there is something I can do or can I have my team do to fix.

  Here are some details of my configuration:

  • Using BES to the corporate network.  I don't know what version of BES we use, but I know that this isn't the last, because we don't get emails in HTML format.  We are about 4.4 or 4.5 and soon (as soon as I make a problem out of it) will be upgrading to the most recent which I HOPE will be changed.
  • OPTIONS/EMAIL MESSAGE RECONCILIATION: Reconcile wireless is enabled.

  Hoping that someone knows something or can explain why it would be designed like that.  There must be a good reason.

  Under BES, you should be getting full reconciliation of read/two-way state - if you read on the device, it must mark it as read on the server (and Outlook). Similarly the other way around. There will be no instant - there may be delays, especially if you use Outlook in set mode cached... but I didn't have a delay that became so long the point of being problematic.

  If this does not work, you will need to get with your admins BES that something is wrong... and they are in control of it.

  We will have a problem with a Z10 BlackBerry where marked as "unread" messages (i.e. "BOLD" text with yellow envelope) and then after a while (don't know exactly how long), they become 'read', even when they have not been opened.

  Of course, it is therefore difficult to ensure that all messages are read.

  Is there a setting that needs to be changed, or is it some sort of glitch?

  Depending on your server configuration (pop, imap, activesync, etc), you will get different results.

  In General, if you experience this problem, then something somewhere is significant 'read' on the server, it is not the Z10.

  There is some info in this thread on this, I had the same problem and it is resolved by changing all clients (Z10, playbook and outlook) for IMAP access. Now I have a full synchronization between all devices and it's great.

  The older Blackberrys used BIS, which is not used on the Z10. BIS has done a good job to hide all these "issues" that we see now with access different e-mail server configurations, but learning of the 'new way' will actually give you better reconciliation once you get it all sorted.

  Mark mail as read when opening Thunderbird, the default value is immediately, but that can be changed in options.

  Maybe your slot some mistaken hypothesis that there is a sort of preview of the message.

  "Mark prior Opened" has existed for a long time... it must be present for you. When, exactly, your sequence you press the key? It must be:

  • Home screen > Messages > (highlight a date separator line) > > mark prior Opened/Read

  So for example, if you have a message highlighted when you press on the key, then the selection of the Mark prior open menu are not displayed... only when you have a separator line to date highlighted the selection of the menu you want to display.

  I can't say for sure from your post, but if you are referring to the reading of a message on GMail (at the level of the server, from a computer, via the WebMail interface), and then as 'read' status reflected on your BB, it is not possible... see this KB.

  On the other hand, if we talk about changing the status of reading on the BB interface itself, you can do this by selecting all the date separator, and then pressing on the key and selecting "mark prior opened".
