  Buy and external drive large enough to hold them, then after you transfer to this new drive you can erase them from your internal drive. You will have problems using a flash drive. The smallest you can get for your needs is 256GBs and will be costly.

  You don't have to do anything.  When you open your iPhoto library with the new photo app that the existing library is migrated to a new library of Photos.  However, as with any operation should have a current backup before proceeding.
