Creating an index of subjects organized by menu

Our company has a manual 3600 + pages for a software that is 30 years. The software product is very run down - in fact, it's mostly a text-based program. Users access the different modules of the program by typing in the menu numbers, which are shown on the screen. Originally, the manual was organized by these numbers of menu, but new customers have a hard time finding information. A few years ago, we reorganized the topics to be focused on the task, but we have some known users as well as our support staff who always want to be able to look at a list of topics organized by menu number. In our last version, I did everything manually by printing a list of all topics and their number of menu and add them as links from cross-reference in the back of this manual. This took more than a week and has been a major pain.

Obviously, from a maintenance perspective, it's a nightmare. Is it possible that I can automate this process by using an index or table of contents to do this change? If so, what would be the best way to go about setting this up?

We use unstructured FrameMaker 10 on Windows 8.1.

Thank you!

Jodie

Jodie,

You can use personalized markers to create a list of markers, an alphabetical list of markers, or an index of markers (separated from a normal Index).

If you want to create an index, remember that you can force sort orders by adding a term out at the end of an entry within square brackets, for example

Menu entry: sub-entree [aaa]<- the="" "aaa"="" forces="" this="" to="" be="" the="" first="" sub-entry="" under="" the="" menu="">

You can use your numbers menu as a method to sort the index. Depends on how many levels you need in your index, and how you want to organize the elements. You can have several markers in place to create different clues.

You can have an eye to Index Tools Pro Steve Kubis (Silicon Prairie - produced FrameMaker) or Frank Stearns IXgen (Frank Stearns Associates - IXgen for FrameMaker, homepage) in order to make the creation and insertion of markers a little less painful.

  • Re-create all indexes on new data files

    Hello

    on FSCN 9.2 on Win 2008

    -Are there any script or utility to do this?

    -can you offer me any scenario?

    Otherwise, I think only of:

    0-extract DDL for all areas of storage and index.

    1-drop tablesapces

    2 Create tablespaces (by the DBMS_GETDLL script ('TABLESPACE'...)

    3 re-create all indexes (by the DBMS_GETDLL script ('INDEX',...))

    of 786997.1

    There is no trace of PeopleTools that stores the name of the tablespace for the index.

    Here's how to work the tablespaces.

    There is a table called PSDDLMODEL where we store the information of DOF model for index and table creation, among other things. DDL models contain a template with replaceable parameters. One of the parameters in the create index Oracle is a field called INDEXSPC. This field by default is PSINDEX.

    If you wish to override this value, you can go in the App Designer, open a folder, select Tools-> data Administrations-> select Index to edit the index and then select modify DDL, then select change the setting for the Create Index and Create Unique Index model. This replaces PSINDEX for this record. The name of the underlying table is PSIDXDDLPARM.

    If you want to change the default PSINDEX to something else, go to the utilities Menu and use DOF model by default and change the PSINDEX to something else. Once you change this setting, the next time that you create the index, it will be created in the tablespace.

    If you create an index in a different tablespace outside PeopleSoft, we have no knowledge of this and do not update our tables in order to take into account where he currently resides. Once you have updated the default template and replaced the records you want to replace, you can make a Data Mover, followed of a Data Mover import export and the index will be created as they have been redefined. Or you can just do a SQL Create Index and re-create all of them.

    I have an existing table partitioned by list. I'm supposed to create local indexes on this subject.

  • CS6 - create an index and import a pdf file

    How to create an index for a book, and import a PDF in InDesign CS6. The CS6 InDesign is only allow imports of XML documents not PDFs. Is there a work around for this? And I'm not... to create an index - find the tab from the drop down "subjects."

    Thank you in advance for your help!

    As mentioned earlier, you asked 2 different questions. I hope that this answer allows you to satisfy you with both of them.

    Creating an index:

    The sample file is an extraordinary, but the creation of an index is well explained. InDesign cs6 indexing - tutorial on how to create an Index for your book! - YouTube

    Import a PDF file:

    As I said before, you import PDF images files. You can use the same path than with images: drag and drop, D, file-> Place

    Please pay attention to the 'options import' as you can choose between different "cultures": Bounding Box, Art, Trim, bleed, media.

    For a multiple page PDF, you can choose the page or page range. Etc.

    Nicolas said the "PlaceMultipagePdf" script that you will find in the window-> Utilities-> scripts Panel. Get off at samples-> JavaScript

    This script updates the Pdf pages on a new page. Try, if you are tempted to import a multi-page PDF document.

    As I said before, you can also import other InDesign files. These editable resident files, i.e. you can open and change what must be changed and the imported file will be updated like any other document bound, as Illustrator documents for example...

    Since these files are regarded as "graphics" (equivalent to Illustrator data files), they can't be changed inside InDesign.

  • Name and the index of subjects in ID CS4 or 5?

    Does anyone know a good way to create two indices in a book using ID CS 4 or 5? For example, with an index name and subject, I thought about each entry for, say, subjects with a special symbol, leaving the entires name alone, generating combined index, stripping the subject entries specially marked with maybe a GREP expression and copy into a separate story. It is not elegant, but probably doable. All the best ideas?

  • TDMS open, FALSE to create an index file bug?

    Hello

    I have the version of LabView 2013 Pro. I (would) like the new feature to choose to not create index file when you open a new TDMs file for data logging.

    However, even if I wire a constant TAMPERING to the Terminal "create index file?", when my farm asks the PDM file after recording data, an index file is created.

    I correctly write data and close the file in the end...

    Is this a bug?

    You can try to reproduce it?

    Thank you!

    Hi man,

    According to you the description that the index file is created when you stop recording of data. If your machine is running the DataFinder (it's a service installed by DIAdem), the DataFinder will start indexing the TDMS files when the TDMS file is closed. If LabVIEW does not create the index TDMS during the recording of data file, but the DataFinder indexing service creates him index file TDMS when process data recording stops.

    So if you have the DataFinder running on your computer, please, try to turn off the service of indexation of DataFinder icon in the system tray.

  • How to create Spatial indexes in SQL Developer Data Modeler 4

    Hello

    What is the procedure to create a Spatial index in SDDM v4? I found myself at an impasse because of the following problems:

    (1) retro-engineering rate the spatial index, then I need to add them manually.

    (2) adding an index does not allow me to check the 'spatial', and does not allow me to add the sdo_geometry column in the index definition.

    (3) for the registration of the spatial properties for a table, I can not choose the name of the Spatial Index.

    I came across an old post (Data Modeler - cannot create a spatial index), but this post is no longer valid because SDDM V4 does not allow me to create an index without columns (definition of the incomplete index).

    Help is appreciated,

    Kind regards

    Richard.

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks for your update.  I'm scared, I was assuming you were using the stand alone rather than SQL Developer Data Modeler.

    I tried using SQL Developer 4.1.0.18.37 (ai2) using a thin connection and got the ClassCastException you have found.

    But when I used ai2 autonomous, maker of data using the same login details 'Advanced', it worked OK and imported from the spatial index.

    (I'm puzzled as to why these two seem to behave differently, as this is the version ai2 data integrated with SQL Developer ai2 maker).

    I then plugged and reverse engineering the same tables (yet) in a new model.

    Funny is that there is no error in the external journal this time, but the spatial properties are still not retroconcues correctly.

    Is it possible that you have not set the option to import the spatial properties?  I expect that the spatial properties would be imported or that the error should be registered.

    SQL Developer ai2 imported properly the spatial properties and the spatial index, when I used a basic connection and specified host, port, and SID or Service name.

    Another issue: SQL Developer relies on a certain JDK / JDBC library?

    Any Java JDK 1.8 should be good.

  • Creating an Index associated with a constraint

    I'm a beginner,

    I got confused, can someone explain what follows...

    _ Creating an Index associated with a constraint

    Oracle database applies a UNIQUE key or a constraint integrity PRIMARY KEY on a table by creating a unique index on the unique key or primary key. This index is created automatically by the database when the constraint is enabled. No action is required by you when you run the CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE statement to create the index, but you can optionally specify an ESCALATION using clause to exercise control over his creation. This includes them when a constraint is defined and enabled, and when a constraint defined but disabled is selected.

    To enable a constraint UNIQUE or PRIMARY KEY, thus creating an index associated, the owner of the table must have a quota for the tablespace intended to hold the index or the UNLIMITED TABLESPACE system privilege. The index related to a constraint always takes the name of the constraint, unless you optionally specify otherwise.

    Yes, you are right. As above Sybrand and docs say that we can use the INDEX USING something like this:

    CREATE TABLE is)
    A1 INT PRIMARY KEY to the AID of INDEX (create index on a (a1) AI));

    Just read this link, it has all the answers.

    This position in the CREATE INDEX Syntax [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/statements_5012.htm] is used for a table alias.

    LOCAL is not a reserved word.

  • You can create an index on a map?

    I have a few questions that I can't understand, or find a viable for example. You can create an index for a card, contained in a nested object, and if so, how would you do that? I have currently a filter inspected this criterion in the cache, but I am unable to understand to create an index of usabe for the custom filter. I use coherence 3.5.2 - any help would be most appreciated. I don't know if / what should I do with the SimpleMapIndex...

    Here's the Basic object below map. My filter retrieves all objects of ClientType with a client in his collection that contains the past in integer value in the customer's card. So can you create an Index on a card (and a nested to it) and how do you this? The index should be on the nested customerValues hashmap.
    class CustomerGroup
    {
        Set<Customer> customers ;
    }

    class Customer
    {
        Map<Integer, CustumerValue> customerValues;
    }

    If you write a custom, ValueExtractor you need to create an index, then you will not have a custom filter.

    Depending on how effective it must be custom Extractor you can use POF and don't have to deserialize the entries to create the index, or it can deserialize the class, which will make the code simpler.

    For example, without the use of POF

    public class MapKeyExtractor extends EntryExtractor implements PortableObject {

        public MapKeyExtractor() {
        }

        @Override
        public Object extractFromEntry(Map.Entry entry) {
            Set keys = new HashSet();
            CustomerGroup group = (CustomerGroup) entry.getValue();
            Set customers = group.getCustomers();
            for (Customer customer : customers) {
                keys.addAll(customer.getCustomerValues().keySet());
            }
            return keys;
        }

        @Override
        public boolean equals(Object obj) {
            return (obj instanceof MapKeyExtractor);
        }

        @Override
        public int hashCode() {
            return MapKeyExtractor.class.hashCode();
        }

        @Override
        public void readExternal(PofReader in) throws IOException {
            super.readExternal(in);
        }

        @Override
        public void writeExternal(PofWriter out) throws IOException {
            super.writeExternal(out);
        }
    }

    The extractor above returns a collection of all the integer values in the keys to all the customerValues of all customers in a ClientType (I guessed you have some accessor methods on classes that you posted).

    You can then use a ContainsFilter for your query. For example to get all values in the cache where the customerValues card contains a 19-key...

    Set results = cache.entrySet(new ContainsFilter(new MapKeyExtractor(), 19));

    You could write a version of the MapKeyExtractor which uses POF and wouldn't not deserialize values, but it's more complicated code, because should extract the POF of value stream map and go down the keys and values extract the key. It's doable, but not worth it unless you're really worried about the execution of updates of the index.

    Discalimer I wrote the code over the top of my head so have not compiled or tested, but it should be OK.
