DNG preview embeded average size versus Lightroom generate minimum preview.

HI -.

I have converted my raw files to DNG with preview set to medium instead of the whole set.

In contrast in Lightroom, there are several preview option (minimum, 1:1, etc.); I always use a minimum because Lightroom will build a larger preview on the fly when necessary and retains in the cache for 30 days.

I wonder if I really have no need to convert raw with the complete preview files because Lightroom will build a larger preview in Lightroom. This would save 10 to 15% smaller size of the DNG file.

I saw the photographers convert to DNG compressed with size super small file and it does not make a real difference in large visible overview to develop.

Thoughts? I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

Frank

Regardless of the size of the preview that you choose to have Lightroom generates, these previews are used only in the library module. Lightroom always generates an overview of raw image data when you use the develop module. I can't comment on the creation of small previews during the conversion to DNG. I always left just the medium setting. You will need to decide what is best for you. If this savings of 10-15% is critical for you then go and generate smaller previews. These glimpses into the DNG file are used by some programs that do not recognize or allow you to work with the raw image data. These programs will automatically display the embedded JPEG preview.

    Steps to reproduce:

-J' Iintroduce yourself in your catalog (replace valid)

-Select the invalid image (or any group container) in Lightroom

-Select "metadata-> Update DNG previews and metadata.

  • DNG previews

LR 2.4 use of the embedded DNG previews? If not, is there a reason with a workflow for LightRoom and Photoshop to use any level of better than average preview? I find it useful to have an overview in the Finder (MAC), but do not know that the extra size is worth the full size unless LR takes advantage of that somehow, but apparently, at least in earlier versions, that is not. An example: a CR2 file has been 16.1 MB DNG w / med 14.1 MB and DNG w / full 16.6 MB.

In addition, noted that when you saw the update with the library > metadata > Update DNG previews & metadata preview seems to be full size, based on the size of the file. Someone who can confirm? Anyway do LightRoom writing that update in Preview average level?

    Thank you.

LR 2.4 use of the embedded DNG previews? If not, is there a reason with a workflow for LightRoom and Photoshop to use any level of better than average preview?

Only a few seconds after you load the DNG in Lightroom. Then, it generates its own preview and who writes in its database of the preview. Embedded previews are ignored without danger for the initial display and so really makes no sense for them to be anything else than the average.

Also, noted that when you saw the update with the library > metadata > Update DNG Previews & metadata preview seems to be full size, based on the size of the file.

I don't know (I do not really dng), but there is something in the preferences pane import panel related previews dng that might do what you want. It could also be handled by the section file in the catalogue of handling settings panel.

  • Bug - Update DNG previews and metadata?

I am relatively new to using Lightroom, so maybe it's not a bug, but it certainly doesn't seem fair...

When I choose [metadata > Update DNG previews and metadata] my pre-selection of metadata saved previously is cleared. I was in the habit of using Ctrl + S to save the metadata in a photo, but I read in the help file for the following:

" If you work with a DNG file, choose metadata > Update DNG previews and metadata to save changes to metadata in the file and also generate an overview based on current raw processing settings. " ".

This should not happen; It could cause a lot of grief. Or is there something I'm missing here?

Reapply the preset will result in no loss of data, nor can it delete the original.

  • How to cancel "Update DNG Preview & Metadata"

How can you cancel the Photo menu option "Update DNG Preview & metadata" in the develop module?

I accidentally hit this at which point Lightroom has added a ' metadata' entry in the history for the file.  It also seems to update the preview of the file (as seen with before / after).

I tried to undo the change, but all Lightroom wasn't remove history items ("metadata" remained at the top, all cursors edit remained the same (even if history was deleted) and the 'before' picture was permenantly has changed.)

Not even to reset the image of the library-> photos-> develop settings-> Reset, then 'Update DNG Preview & Metadata"worked.

Is the only way of this operation to remove the DNG format and reimport?  It is not as if Lightroom will warn you that the operation cannot Ωtre annulΘe as with the command "Read metadata from a file.

    I use Lightroom 3.6 on Windows 7 SP 1.

The point of 'before' view does not show the preview (internal preview LR or the preview in a DNG image). It shows a previous version of the default image that is the State of the parameters of development directly after import.

Maybe you accidentally changed before using the different controls of 'copy/swap parameters of/before/after? You can use the history list and specify any stage of history as the "before" version using the context menu to correct this.

EDT: I think you've discovered a bug here: the conversion of a raw as DNG and save the DNG preview & metadata changes the version of the 'before' to the current version. I will report on the forum feedback. It's here: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lr_4_1_convert_to_dng_and_update_dng _preview_metadata_changes_the_before_version

  • My desktop icons are moving to the left of the screen and reset of average size.

Recently I connected to my laptop Toshiba Satellite Pro to find my desktop icons lined up on the left of the screen on the average size.

I've always had my icons implemented as/where I want them and on small.

After right click on the desktop, I found that the medium-sized icons is checked and the Auto Align box is also checked / I unchecked those boxes and replaced my icons where I wish it and restarted my laptop... to find the icons back to the left and back to middle size!

I just spent about 12 hours to try to resolve this problem.
I use XP and I started having problems as soon as I booted up.
I tried several options.  Right-click on an empty area of the desktop, System Restore, using my free anti-virus, Avast, but nothing worked, whenever I rebooted the icons moved to the left of the screen.
My final solution was to use a piece of free software called "Malwarebytes".
I ran the scan quick option nd about 18 minutes, he began to identify items of malicious programs.
In total, there were 4 pieces.  When "Malwarebytes" asked what I wanted to do, I chose 'delete '.
I had to "reboot" before the changes have taken effect, and I am pleased to report that it does not work with gusto.
I used 'AVAST' when I first add the problem and he found several problems on my hard drive but when I asked to remove them I received a message that the last four items could not be found.
It seems these are ones I finally removed with "Malwarebytes".
I loaded the latest version of AVAST because I find it does not slow down my PC and if I have other problems to suck, I'll use what I can find.
I hope that this help those with similar problems with the icons on the desktop etc.

  • Add existing DNG to the new installation of Lightroom

    Hi all

Simple question here... How can I import metadata from existing DNG in a new installation of Lightroom?

    Is it still possible?

Yes, you would be able to import the DNG files, that shouldn't be a problem.

I am trying to gage how much space I need in their housing. Also if I can't stand instant in the same directory as the rest of virtual machine files, how I would Flash a different data store?

Basically, snapshots start at zero and increase when they are used. Snapshots should be very short term and therefore should not become large.

  • Can I record a Photoshop6 dng file for import back into Lightroom 4

Can I save a Photoshop6 dng file for import back into Lightroom 4. I don't understand why this is not simple.

    Hello!

Format DNG aims to be a universal formats of files for files camera raw: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html?promoid=DTEHA

You can save a DNG camera raw without problem.

Just to go the low left corner of the interface hand and select "save image".

    (as explained in the help files here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/creativesuite/cs/using/WS91C1E0BD-9600-42b2-8EBE-1E012ED61058. html #WSB0DC278F-B3DF - 4a 60 - 88BC - B3D6A852C242 )

Or you try to save a file edited in Photoshop as a DNG?

For what purpose, exactly? A TIFF, PSD or PSB file can have a raw file, saved as a smart object (to allow a subsequent reprocessing in Camera Raw) and all the pixels / editing of vector layers intact.

If recording maximize compatibility, it can be opened in Lightroom for cataloging and editing, if necessary.

  • RAID block size and Lightroom

I setup Raid 1 (mirrored) on two drives of 1 TB and in the choice of block size, this issue was raised. What size of block is best when using raid drives for Lightroom catalogs and dng, jpg and tiff files associated with each catlg? Currently, I selected 128 k because 90 percent of the cases are from 1 to 20 mb in size with a 6-9 mb avg. There are a few files to 20 k - 500 k.   Any suggestions or ideas? I'm on the right track for the use of space and a good performance? I do not seek for its remarkable performance space is use is my main concern.
    Steve

Size of allocation RAID will affect the use of the space.  Use of the space is determined by the size of allocation unit file system.  For a file system that is for the most part, image, size files important allocation (64 +) is a good thing.

Distribution RAID size must be at least the file system allocation unit size.  128K is a reasonable size for images for the performance.

    Keep it defragmented.

  • Can I re - merge a catalog of smart with their original dng previews in a different catalog?

    I can do this wrong...

I exported a catalog of the only intelligent seen at work with my MBP. It is as simple as the import of this new catalogue back in my master catalog where the original dng files, or is there some other tricks, I have to do? If I import the smart preview catalog, it will create duplicates or it will merge previews with their corresponding originals.

Looks like I answered my own question. It is possible to simply update the previews and parameters for the main catalogue of development.

I created a test catalog of a few chose my preview catalog smart and then imported this catalogue in my master catalog. The dialog box gives me the opportunity to not import the original files and update the previews, metadata and develop settings only.

So all is good. Thanks for all the weight.

  • Determine average sizes VM

I would like to create a report that does the following:

Shoot in a list of virtual machines from a text file

Determines the following information for each virtual computer:

    • Put RAM in service
    • Number of vCPUs put into service
    • total size of all the vmdk configured for the virtual computer

Then the report returns and gives me the average for the Group of virtual machines in terms of:

    • per computer GB virtual RAM
    • average number of vCPUs per VM
    • proviosned by GB VM storage means

Then export the data back out to a text file

    Hello, TheVMinator-

OK, then, have to him.  Or, if you have not gotten here, yet, you could use something like:

    Get-VM -Name (Get-Content c:\temp\someVMNames.txt) | ## select some info about the VMs Select NumCpu,MemoryGB,@{n="hardDiskCapGB"; e={(Get-Harddisk -VM $_ | Measure -Sum CapacityGB).Sum}} | ## measure the averages of those properties Measure-Object -Average NumCpu,MemoryGB,hardDiskCapGB | Select Property, Average, Count | ## export to CSV Export-Csv c:\temp\vmSizeAvgs.csv -UseCulture -NoTypeInformation

Which should translate into a CSV file in c:\temp\ that has the values you want for the VMS given.  The list of names to the entrance is a text file with a name of virtual machine per line.

  • Export size with Lightroom and Photoshop

So, I took a pan of denver.

The file is a raw file. and at the end I need to be able to be a 24 "x 72" canvas print.

I need to edit in lightroom and then edit in photoshop. I did several times and works very well!

I need set the file size for what I need to keep maximum quality?

When I send to photoshop, when I return to lightroom, or when I export the PSD Lightroom JPEGs from Lightroom to file over?

Help, please! Kind of weird for me ha!

    Thank you!

No, Photoshop does not provide any size image unless you do it manually in > Image > Image size.

PS "accept" the resolution that is sent to it to LR. In LR, you can specify what resolution you want for editing in PS (default value is 240 ppi) - get in > Edit > preferences > external editing.

Resolution is intimately linked to the size of the image. For example: If a picture comes out of the unit at 3000 x 2000 pixels. To 300 ppi image would be 10 "x 6.67". 240 DPI the same image (without increasing the resolution or downsampling) would be 12.5 "x 8.33". For quality printing, you would generally aim at a resolution of 240 minimum.

If your original image (the panorama after it has been sewn together) there is not enough ppi for 24 "x 72" desired printing at 240 dpi you will need to enlarge the image in PS (upsampling) or you must specify the size in the export dialog box in LR. LR will then zoom in.

  • Average size of rendered file?

Hey, guys. I just finished my first video with PrPro CS5. I exported in MPEG-4 656 x 480. It is 10 minutes, 16 seconds and carries a 122 MB file size and. Who is average or the file too big for such a short video?

Assets include 67 images prepared in Photoshop to 720 x 480, seven 3D animated logos and titles, six effects, GenArts Sapphire, text 28 titles, 7 minutes of Music Mp3 and WAV and voice, two minutes of footage to AVI and 3 minutes from new HD images.  I downloaded on my web server to try it and it starts and stops on the first lap of horizon. Don't you think it's a server problem or a problem with my download speed? Suggestions as to the ideal transmission speed tweak for my next export down the size? Thanks, Barry

There is really no such animal as a "medium size" for a video rendering (or exported). In general, you want adjust the encoding settings at best within the environment and variables you received.

Based on the size of the file and the time you posted (the actual content of the video doesn't really count too), you encode about 3Mbps, which is going to be a little too much for a type of connection Internet download and buffer fast enough to ensure smooth playback. According to the integrated player that you use, occasionally you have settings you can set to dictate how much of the video is buffered before playback, but again you just might run out of gas before you get there.

I can get enough good encode at 640 x 480 pixels with a speed of 1Mbps connection (usually with 2-pass VBR encoding), and in your case, the file would be about a third the size. With this rate, for each "unit" to download the video, you would have cached three times the duration of the video for local playback - probably enough to ensure that you do not have the stutter or stop. If the quality is not quite to your taste (I'm generally pretty happy with this flow), you have the possibility to increase the transmission speed (although you may encounter the same problem as before, without a dedicated/streaming server), or reduce the size of the image. Something like 480 x 360, for example, you would not be stretch the available bits quite as far, and the video quality will be somewhat higher. If it works for your application is up to you; This is why I said initially that you must take into account all the variables and how you plan to distribute/see the video to find the best combination of parameters.

    Hope that helps a little.
