iPhoto and Photos

I use iPhoto. If I open the Photos app that I store in iPhoto automatically transfer to the app Photos still would continue to have access in iPhoto? I don't want to lose the use of iPhoto but am curious to see what there is in the Photos app. Thanks much for any help.

You can launch the Photos app with the hold Option key and select the option to create a new empty library.  Or you can drag a copy of your iPhoto on Photos.app icon library to migrate your iPhoto library to a library of Photos to test.  You won't double the amount of used space on your hard drive for Photos uses hard links to the masters photos in the iPhoto library for these photos present at the time of the migration.

When you connect iPhone or camera photo library can be the first to open so that you can put do not open by unchecking this box in the Photos with your iPhone connected:

A solution may be better applications to opening when iPhone is connected is to go into general iPhoto preferences panel (before creating a library of Photos) and set the Open with setting to "no application":

If you need to manually launch the application to use after plugging in your iPhone or your camera.

  • Using iPhoto and Photos together

Is - this here anyway to use iPhoto and pictures together until I have get used to the interface of Photos?

The Photos and both iPhoto 9.6.1 work on El Capitan.  You can have both applications open at the same time.

Only two applications have a different format for libraries of photos, so each of them uses a separate photo library.  If you edit photos in iPhoto, the changes will not appear in the photo library and vice versa.

You could use iPhoto and its library as your main library and import new photos in iPhoto, while exploring the Photos.  Once you are confident that the Photos will suffice your needs, open the iPhoto library in Photos and create a new library of pictures of him.  Then start to use the Photos as your main photo application.

  • Migration assistant will consolidate iPhoto and photo libraries

I just bought an iMac "towards the end of 2015" to replace my iMac 2011. I'm a Mac (MacBook Pro and iMac) user since 2005 and I am aware of the installation of the Migration Wizard when you first install a new Mac. However, for some reason, I have an iphotos library and a library of photos. Can anyone tell if migration assistant will consolidate in a single library or I have to do (manually?) before migration?

Two follow-up questions (if you're still reading this...)

iMovie is now only opens on my iMac 2011 (part of the reason why I bought a new iMac). There are projects that must still be finalized that it contains. Speculation as to whether the data migration is likely to result in my getting access to these existing projects? Worst case scenario would be that everything that is corrupt iMovie on my current iMac is transferred to the new machine. My guess is that what stop imovie to open 2011 on the iMac is not related to the data that make up the project, so that when I migrate to the new machine, I go back to my projects. Can anyone confirm this?

Last question (base); What are the recommendations for what should be my time machine drive? I currently have 1 Tb internal, more an external of 2 to 3 TB of disk. With the new machine equipped with connectivity Thunderbolt that I will be in the market for a new external hard drive. because the new machine has 2 TB drive internal pot and am looking to get a disc hard thunderbolt of 3 - 4Tb, should I still 5-6 to time machine as backup (assuming I get nearby using all available space my on my internal and external drive)?

    Much appreciated for your advice.

    No, it won't merge.

Using both programs such as libraries have different content that needs merging? When Photos import iPhoto library, it creates hard links to files, not copy, so they do not all the disk space.

    I can't respond to the #2.

Your our backup drive should be two to three times the amount of data to back up.

  • iPhoto and photo library on hard drive storage

I'm trying to free up space on my HD, and I've got this huge 'other' file.  Further investigation, it seems that he might actually reflect my pictures on my computer, despite photos apparently only 12.42 GB of space.

But then my pictures folder contains 80,21 GB of data.  So, the 'library of Photo migrated' iPhoto said he composed 24.96 GB.  And the photo library makes 53,11 Go.  Can I delete the iPhoto library (is it a duplicate because it was migrated?)

Yes. But you claim back so much space that you think that both applications share the masters BLAH common to both pictures.

  • iPhoto and photo apps, put photos in files?

I recently bought a 2014 refurbished MacBook Pro and found that the iPhoto update is not available to the Canada and was not long rendered unusable app. All my photos have, therefore, to be added to the normal photos app. In the photos app, I have not been able to find a way to put my photos in files without putting them in two different places. Has anyone found a way to put their photos in folders without doing that? And putting pictures in two separate locations takes extra space on the computer? I have over 1000 pictures on my computer and really want them to be in the files so that they are easy to manage, but I don't want to take more space on my computer. I just switched to Mac, a Windows system and it's the only thing that I find I miss on windows and don't like Mac computers.

    several things

update to iPhoto information see can't update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

Yes, if you have two photos places (in the library of Photos and outside it) you will be double used space

Photos can use a referenced library, but it is a very bad idea, there is no advantage and accumulated several problems for the future - and is not recommended

Probably the answer for you is to use different software that works the way you want - Photos is a modern database manager that uses the non-destructive editing and cannot be used with your wishes of a destructive file based editing system - you can change the software or change your workflow to modern methods

One of the rules of life is that people don't like the things that they do not understand - so either change and use something you understand or learn the new system if you do not understand it or you will continue to be unhappy

  • iPhoto and photos, delete the iPhoto library?

After that I've migrated a default iPhoto library during installation of the Photos, I no longer intend to use iPhoto,

    Delete the iPhoto library?

If so, which file to remove - see PHOTO...

All this without losing any data.

    PS

I also use iCloud photo library - with my iOS and OS X devices - what is here?

    Thank you.

You will not lose data if you delete the iPhoto library - you don't have an it's one you delete

However is it discouraged because it will save very little space and you may want to or have need of the later - iPhoto library it is best to wait at least three months and when you remove it remember to archive everything first just in case where you want or need

  • If I use iPhoto and photo I use double cloud storage

I seem to have iPhoto & Photo with virtually identical libraries.  If I get a notice that it is full of storage iCloud, will be eliminated one of the Aps of Photo. Give me more storage?  Or they share the same 'space '?

    Thank you

    NO.

  • Sierra and photos?

I use iPhoto and Photos app to keep my photos. How will affect Sierra these applications?

You'll have to wait until the Sierra was released because it is still in beta and subject to change. What I can tell you (from comment around the internet), is that the Photos are updated in the Sierra and iPhoto remains the same. But wait a day or two after that that it is released and see notes on the final version before the update - and of course make a backup.

  • iPhoto or Photos?

Which one should I use? I have both on my computer. I use OS X El Capitan 10.11.3

Some of my photos (in each program) I can't edit. I click on edit and all the editing options are grayed out.

I have also a large NUMBER of photos that are not displayed. They are a white box with nothing in it.

Any idea what's going on? Where are my photos and what program should I be using? Does this mean photos are doubles and too much room in iPhoto and Photos?

A question at the same time help

1 you use is totally personal - support iPhoto has been interrupted for more than a year and one day he will stop working - for those who have only update every five years that is not a problem - if you install each update, it is - and Photos have more features than iPhoto and a stream of completely different work - so you fist need to make this decision

2 - once you take a decision on the software you want to use, then you will need to provide clear symptoms and doubts, including the version and exact context

    4. with regard to space - not - when you are migrating from iPhoto to Photos both libraries use hard towards the same original photos links and previews same so little extra space is used - Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

5 - and you're three updates behind - your first step should be updated to OS X 10.11.6, the current version of the operating system - which might or might not help things but is a good idea

  • When I drag imessage photos in iphoto, it shows that they give, but then I can't find photos in iphoto. and when I open the finder there is no option of 'media' in the side menu.

Could not find photos in iphoto after drag / drop imessage

Correct, there is no media browser in the finder - only for download or open or install windows

They show in the last import? check your type of event - they are probably n = just not where you are looking - in the last import done right click on one and show events - an event should open with your photo display - if not arrive then back up your iPhoto library and hold down the option and command keys at the launch of the iPhoto and repair permissions hen rebuild the database

  • How to copy an iPhoto Library AND photos

With the help of iPhoto Library Manager I made a copy of my iPhoto library to a new external drive, but I noticed that when I opened the library copied, the photos it contains are always referenced to the original photos, no copies on the new drive, as I had hoped.

If as expected, how a copy an iPhoto Library AND photos referenced to a new location, on an external drive, as is any independent on the new drive?

    Thank you

    Geoff

    Simple:

Go to your pictures folder and find the iPhoto library here. Drag it to the external hard drive. It will make an exact copy it

    Fact.

Warnings: the player must be directly connected (USB, lightning etc.) and Mac OS extended (journaled) format

Are you running a Managed or referenced library?

A managed, library is the default setting, and iPhoto copies the files in the iPhoto library during import. The files are then stored in the library package

A referenced library is where iPhoto does NOT copy the files in the iPhoto Library when importing because you have made a change to iPhoto-> preferences-> advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files in the library to import) The files are then stored wherever you put them and not in the library package. In this scenario, you are responsible for the management of files.

If you have a library that is referenced, then it is much more complicated.

  • I just upgraded to El Capitan.  Our photos are in both iPhoto and Aperture.  Is it possible to include both libraries in Photos (El Capitan)?

Our photos were in iPhoto and Aperture until the upgrade to El Capitan.  Photo and the opening are now gone.  Is it possible to include both of these libraries in Photos of El Capitan?  (When I added the second library of Photos, the first library disappeared.)

Use PowerPhotos or the library to iCloud to merge; If necessary, launch Photos with Option key button and choose another library.

  • I deleted the pictures twice in iPhotos and iCloud. The photos have been removed from books I've done this year.

I do a book every year for my mother.  I did five or six, and this year was the only time that I had no problem.  I had duplicate an image to use it a second time in the book.  The book is very good.  It is listed under projects and saved in pdf format. After that I bought a book (by means of projects) for each Member of the family, I settled remove all duplicates created in iPhoto and stored on the cloud.  I deleted all but one of each photo (in some cases, there was 8-12 duplicates!)    When I went back to work in the projects, the pictures were also removed it.  They are always correct in the PDF but I can't buy a book through this version.  I start two books and you're wondering how to avoid any duplicates with these books.  It wasn't the situation of last year.

iPhoto stores nothing in the cloud, do you mean the new Photos.app?

If so what the forum is here

    iPhoto for Mac.

  • It is said is not compatible with El Capitan iPhoto and now I am unable to access 5 years worth of photos! Help, please!

I went to download pictures from my phone on my iMac and I was told 'the version of iPhoto installed on the Mac is not compatible with OS X El Capitan. Download the latest free version from the Mac App Store. "When I do this it says"the object you requested is not available in the US store.". How can I access my pictures now? years 4 + family photos are in iPhoto!

Mac OS X 10.10.3 and newer include Photos, which is designed as a replacement for iPhoto and can import library. If you want to go on the use of iPhoto in addition to or instead of switch to Photos, click here and try following the instructions; you will only be able to do if you got before where associated with iPhoto on the Mac App store.
