6 GB 8 GB v.?

Trying to decide between 6 GB or 8 GB for a new Win7 64-bit system.

All of the guidelines?

It would help me to know how much memory is available after a 'typical' Win7 system boots on a 64 bit system, before you start any application.

I realize that 'typical' is ill defined.  If it helps, I am considering a HP Pavilion.

Find it me difficult to characterize my use of the application.  It will probably change over time.

Currently, it is not uncommon for me to have multiple instances of Excel active at the same time, each with one or two 5 MB files will open.  At the same time, I might have multiple instances of Firefox open (separate windows, no legs), as well as several instances of PDF readers to access large files.  I could also have Skype and Wireshark active.

I'm not much in games.  But I could start see more video streaming.

Windows 7 x 64 allows all 6 GB or 8 GB as long as no other material, probably graphics embedded, didn't need it.

I have 8GBs and after booting, my system uses about 2500 MB. I doubt that I will need all of 8GBs unless I get later in the video rendering large file.

The other consideration when you specify memory on a purchased system, is how they distribute the memory. It is 4 x 2 GB modules for 8GB if 4 slots are available or

2 x 4 GB 8 GB if 3 slots are available.  If you get 6 GB and there are only 3 locations, then they will most likely fill with 3 x 2GBs (for dual channel), which means

later upgraded to 8 GB or more will require removing the 2 GB modules and replace them with 4 GB modules.
