  I suggest that you use nLite (see the first hit in Google search above).

  If your XP CD Pro has NO service pack, you must first integrate the SP2 and then sp3 wake in this.

  If you are not getting paid for it, you may want to have the owner that the equipment tested.  I doubt that all this is due to software on a recovery disc or Windows installation disk.  The prime suspect is the optical drive.  If clean you and problems persist then the unit needs a clean bill of health.

  If connected to a USB port, so no, the computer should detect Windows on the internal disk and boot off that. Not all models have motherboards that can even allow the boot off the USB connections.
