Assign a drive letter to a USB hard drive

How can I assign a drive letter to a USB drive so that it is always the same whenever I plug it to make backups etc.?

Thanks, Martin

Plug in your device and wait for it to be recognized.  Open a command prompt (click the start ORB, then all programs, then Accessories, and then right-click the command prompt icon and select run as administrator). In the command prompt, type diskmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER.  Find your external drive in the list in the disk management window and right click and select "Change Drive Letter and paths", assign the drive letter, you always want to have.

My Compaq Presario with Windows 7 has two USB ports on the front and on the back.  I use both to the front to connect a drive hard ext to the back, usb flash drives and a camera. Everytime Iplug in the disk hard ext, the PC assigns a letter to port such as J.  The next time I plug the camera into the same port, the PC gives it a different letter and I need to go back up and reconfigre Norton where to back up.  How to assign a constant name 'letter' to the USB port?

I think that the previous answer may have been cut off, but they were right. You assign it a letter on the USB port, you assign a letter to the device. With your drive plugged, if you right-click on the computer icon and select manage you will arrive at the computer management screen. Click the disk management icon and you should see your drive listed. Right click on that and you should see a choice to change the drive letter and path. From there, click change and select a drive letter for your device.

Open disk management, find the drive using the drive letter you want to use, change the drive letter of this to 'Z', find the new drive, change the drive letter that you want, and then change the drive letter of the drive you have labeled it 'Z' to a drive letter of your taste.

  • Cannot assign a drive letter using the Vista Disk Manager.

I read these latest solutions possible, but here's my problem.  I need to connect directly a 3.5 drive I pulled a SIN of hammer to my laptop running Windows Vista... because I need to recover a folder deleted this drive 3.5 with software that only works on the directly connected motors.  Software of network recovery might work, but it seems too expensive for just the recovery of this folder.  I connected the hard drive directly via the USB port.  The system tray sees the device, but the Explorer is and of disk management to assign a drive letter is greyed out.  Please help with assigning a drive letter.  There is only one user on the laptop which is also the administrator.  Thank you!

In my view, that Hammer NAS units are based on Linux. Therefore, the drive is probably _not_ formatted with a filesystem Windows reads/writes. Making it very difficult to recover the folder removed since all things you could do to convert to NTFS, say, will also make little probable that you can recover deleted files. Eventually, you could use one of the Linux flavors running from a DVD, for example, Ubuntu and recover the file by using a Linux tool or set the drive on a Linux machine.

  • How to assign a drive letter on a Portable device?

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XSi and I am on Windows 7.  I would like to have the images automatically copied to my hard drive, when I connect the camera.  When I connect the camera via USB, it shows fine in portable devices.  The problem is that the path is Computer\Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi.  I can't get any third-party software to recognize as a path valid (because it does not begin with something like F:\), I can find no way to get Windows 7 to assign a drive letter to the camera directly.

Is it possible to assign a drive letter to the camera or get a third-party software to recognize Computer\Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi as valid a path?

However, it is super annoying and there is no reason windows should not do this for me. I assure you there is no disc corrupt driver problems, jumpers or whatever it is out of whack, I'm a computer programmer myself. I just never fell on the situation and could not find an answer after looking here for 20 minutes and Googling autour and check other sources.

  • Assign the drive letter?

    Hello

As my rocket was working well after going through the washing machine... I just bought a 2 GB Clip +.

It works OK, but in contrast to the "rocket", he is not assigned a drive letter. On the contrary, a 'portable' dialog box appears when I plug the thing into my XP host, I select "Open the device to view files" and a window pops up that says: "My to Clip + 2 GB" I can drop files to copy to the device.

I didn't install the applications on the CD of Sansa: this would assign a drive letter of the Clip + is connected?

    Thank you.

Simple. Go to settings > system settings > USB Mode and set it to the MSC (Mass Storage Class).

  • AC2400 (E8350) router cannot map USB hard drive in Windows network.

    Hi all

I recently bought the Linksys AC2400 wireless router and a USB 3 Western Digital Elements 2 TB hard drive.

The network works perfectly, except for the USB hard drive. The firmware on the router recognizes it okay, but in the windows network, I can't access your hard drive. I simply get a path not found error.

    I tried:

Y access inside or outside Windows Homegroup.

-Re - formatting in the linksys configuration (Fat32... There is room for improvement)

-Test the USB drive directly into the PC, works perfectly and formatted in NTFS.

    -Turn off all firewalls.

-Tried the port USB2/Esata instead of the USB3

Also, from another computer on the network, I get the same error.

Pre-installed on the hard drive was a mediaserver program called Twonky. He wants autoconnet to my router using port 9000, but the web interface I get then does nothing. Also when I enable the mediaserver configuration linksys website, he created a mediaserver in windows network, wth pilots twonk. But I can't change that.

When I test the ftp server, I had access to the hard drive without any problem. This suggests that it is not a compatibility problem.

I could also map the Windows ftp server, but that does not work on my mediaplayer, I need for this network interface.

Does anyone have an idea of what I'm doing wrong and why windows is unable to connect to your hard drive?

I didn't install the new version of firmware, because the changelog mentions nothing about the functions of the USB or storage.

I've added a few photos with the settings, it could be useful.

THX in advance for any response.

    Hi Frank,.

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

If I understand you correctly, the external USB hard drive (HDD) appears in the control panel but does not seem to be detected in my computer screen. The provided Windows tool is disk management in the applet of the Control Panel administrative tools. Click Start-> Control Panel-> administrative tools-> management-> disk management computer.  Then locate the drive in question.  Right-click, and then click paths of access with the drive letter Change.

If this does not work, you can try it free Easeus Partition Manager that you can download at http://easeys, com.  I got lucky with this program and Windows 7.

    Hi Roby,

Thank you for the update on the related question.

This issue may be caused if one of the many reasons as USB driver are corrupt or unstable PC requires an update for problems that could conflict with an external USB hard disk, Windows may be missing other problems hardware or software updates.

    Try these methods and check.

Method 1: Uninstall and reinstall the USB controllers.

Uninstall and reinstall the USB controllers will not affect the USB port, as when restarting the computer/laptop as it gets reinstalled automatically.

    2. Go to device Manager.
    3. Expand the Controllers USB, click drivers.

  • Cannot see the USB hard drive?

    Hello

I created a new XP Pro VM environment and everything seems great so far, however, one of my devices is an external USB hard drive (this is where lies the VMX file).

Yet I do not see it as a connected device, it is not in the list of devices to be tied down to the machine virtual host?

Why am I unable to see this device USB of the XP Guest VM and how to make it visible?

    Thank you

    1DMF

    1. NOT to assign a USB device to the virtual computer - at least, do NOT attempt to use the disk USB us talk

2 instead of this, make sure that you configure network between the host and guest

    3. create Windows shares on USB drive

    4. access to this sharing of the Interior of the guest

This will result in the host beeing the only system that accesses the USB directly - which is the only safe way to do
