Assign a port to a specific virtual machine network and combine ports

Hello

I have two questions.  1. is it possible to assign a specific to a single virtual computer network port? and 2. I can aggregate multiple physical port to act as 1 and have a virtual port to VMS?

I'm new to VMware so please forgive me if this is a fundamental issue.  I tried googleing the issue but did not have much luck.  I have a Dell R710 with 4 physical network ports.  Currently all the virtual machines on the host sharing a port.  I would like to use one of the ports and assign it to a specific virtual machine and only this VM.  One of the virtual machines is my / home server and NFS exports him / home dirs to other systems.  This virtual machine will be cumbersome to use network.  I want to assign its own network for its traffic port does not impede the movement of other virtual machines.

I would also like to consolidate other ports into a single virtual port.

If you can tell me a document that explains how to do this, I would be very grateful.

Thank you

Welcome to the VMware communities forum.   With the default installation of ESXi, a single virtual switch (vSwitch0) is created using vmnic0.   If you want to add additional NIC ports simply go to Configuration > network and then click the properties link to the vSwitch.  Click network adapters, and then click Add to add another NIC port.   ESXi then balance the network traffic load.

You could dedicate a NIC port to a virtual machine, but possibility of ESXi to balance the traffic load I would simply add additional NETWORK adapter ports to vSwitch0.  If your network needs simply to include VM and management traffic, then I would have simply put all 4 ports NETWORK card in vSwitch0 and let ESXi manage traffic.  This way, you get as much redundancy.

If you use network storage for your virtual machines (such as iSCSI) then you can consider segment this traffic.  In this case create you a new vSwitch and that a link to 2 (i.e. 2 NETWORK ports for iSCSI) NETWORK ports and then other 2 NETWORK ports in vSwitch0 for ranks of VM traffic.

VMware now offers a right to training free ESXi.  See the first link below.

  • More than a Virtual Machine on vSwitch\Virtual Machine Network will be NOTconnect

    I have a problem when I start more than one guest on a single vSwitch will connect to the network.

    I have a DELL of 710 with 4 network cards installed.  2 of them are assigned to network management.

    I created a vSwitch1 using 2 other network adapters and that assigned to the virtual machine network.

    I then can't get one of the Virtual Machines to connect to the network.

    Then, I created vSwitch2\Virtual Machine Network2 and use 1 NETWORK for each virtual network card and can then get 2 connected Virtual Machines.

    Sounds like your network switches is configured to only allow one MAC address per physical port.

  • Unable to add the virtual machine network services

    Hello:

    I already read that warning Virtual PC 2007 is not compatible with win 7-64.
    However, I read that it is "unofficially" possible launch.
    OK, I installed it and it worked except networking.
    Basically, I need to install the Virtual Machine Network Services.
    I right click on my network card-> properties-> install-> services-> virtual machine network services (VPC2007 folder: where I can see VMNetSrv.inf)
    Then says Windows: it is impossible to add the requested feature. The specified service has been marked for deletion.

    The problem is that I get this error even on WinXP SP3, so I think that there is something else wrong.

    And of course, Virtual PC 2007 available networks are only: no connection, Local, NAT.  (Missing my physical adapter)

    Thank you!!!

  • Activate the Virtual Machine start and stop

    Hello

    I'm not activate Virtual Machine Startup and shutdown I don't know what is right.

    Untitled.png

    Hello

    This is the VMware KB which provide a workaround to enable this option for VMs on ESXi hosts in cluster HA active.

    VMware KB: Automatic Virtual Machine Startup / Shutdown in ESXi hosts in a cluster VSA is turned off

    Last time (couple of years back), when I was researching on this topic, I found that these settings are applied only when the virtual machine is on the same host ESXi, and once his migrated to another ESXi host for this VM autostart option is lost and needs to be reconfigured again. I don't know if this behavior changed with new versions of vSphere.

    I hope this helps.

  • What is the interval of time between the virtual machine Linux and ESXi host synchronization?

    I have ESX5.0 with a centos6 installed on this linux virtual machine.

    After the installation of vmware for Linux virtual machine tools, I activated the time synchronization between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host through vmware-toolbox-cmd.

    I wonder what is the interval of time between the virtual machine linux and ESXi host synchronization? If I quickly time OS system, when the OS system time will sync back to the ESXi host?

    According to http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/Timekeeping-In-VirtualMachines.pdf:

    By default, the demon checks the guest only once per minute operating system clock.

    However, depending on whether the guest is behind or in front of the result is different. So, please read the section "periodic synchronization" (at least) in the document mentioned above.

  • How can I assign a static ip for each virtual machine

    I have the NIC 2 and 3 vm on my vm server.

    I did find documentation how to assign an ip for each virtual computer fix.

    pleas help me... but probably easy...

    Assuming you have the management and the virtual machines on the same network, attach both rising/NIC bindings to the vSwitch0, configure the management network and tie each VM to the port "VM Network" group. As DSTAVERT mentioned, the IP of the virtual machine configuration is done in the VM themselves, as if they were physical systems.

    sample:

    If you have different subnets for the management and the virtual machines, you must either create multiple vSwitches or work with the VLAN.

  • Specific virtual machines of the user

    Hello

    My company will buy VM Fusion for the Mac Mini. The Mac Mini that we have is joined to the domain. Domain users have administrative privileges. What I could see, is when a domain user 1 installs an operating system called, area 2, another user who logs on to the same mac mini, is not able to see the guest operating system. Only 1 user is able to view the guest operating system. Is it possible that any kind of user (local / domain user) can use the guest operating system? Or is the only specific user?

    Basically, I would like to have the guest operating system visible to all users, is it possible?

    Instead of creating the Virtual Machine in the default location, "/Users/$ {USER} / Documents/Virtual Machines.localized /" place them in "/ Users/Shared/Virtual Machines / ' and make sure that all users have full access to the folder" / Users/Shared/Virtual Machines / "as well as any Virtual Machine Packages of documents including all the files in the Document Package.

  • assign a real drive to a virtual machine

    Hello, I was reading a bit on ESXi and is still not quite clear to me if it is possible to assign exclusive access to a hard drive selector physical host to a virtual machine.

    When I add a new HD to a virtual machine there is an option (number 3) to use the raw map (e.g. SAN) but this option is grayed out.

    In short: for a virtual computer only I want files to be visible by an another operating system (ext2/3), when I move the HD to another system rather than having hard files

    Is this possible?

    Help you enjoy

    I have a VMware Server 2.0 installed on CentOS 5.2, and I have 5 dedicated IP address or static with this server...

    Okay, that means, is not in your server room.

    Your computer has several available ethernet network interfaces: eth0, eth0: 0,

    eth0: 1, eth0:2, eth0:3. Which do you want to bridge vmnet0?

    Your server has only one physical ethernet interface. But there are multiple ip addresses configured on it. If you want to know, how it works and how it is configured, you can read this page.

    You need to reconfigure your network VMware Server 2 to fill the other or several networks. VMware Server documentation is explained on p. 222 and following. In fact, for linux, it is page 229 and includes 'ifconfig' to know what special device (eth0: 0...) what IP address, then run ' vmware - config.pl ' is used to assign the new configuration. But please read the documentation for more details.

  • A specific virtual machine performance problems

    Hi all

    I was wondering if you could help me to check where is the performance of a particular VM bottle neck. I followed a few PDF guides and guide of yellow brick on esxtop thresholds and nothing seems to be in its place, with the exception of this metric named % LAT_C. What I've read, it's the amount of time it takes to wait because of the affirmation of the central processing unit.

    Attached is a screenshot - the virtual machine is AU_ENG_BUILD - this is our server to build in Australia

    If you have 12 logical processors.  and about 44 vCPUs on this host.  also remember that although VMware now has locking opportunisitc. That is, it will take only 2 logical cores if there is a cross-thread call.  I assume that you are using SQL and Exchange, etc., these are applications that support SMP that will lock multiple logical processors each cycle.

    try to evacuate some of the SMP guest to another host and even on the charge and then rerun ESXtop.

  • Script for a specific virtual machine vmotion

    I play a few trials of benchmarking on VMS 2. part of the test is to migrate a virtual computer when certain I/O points are reached. I wrote a simple script for vmotion one of these virtual machines:

    $vm = get-VM-name Bench_VM | Get-View

    $chost = $vm. $host.name

    If ($chost = ESX01.company.com)

    {

    Move-VM VM - Bench_VM - Destination ESX02.company.com

    }

    on the other

    {

    Move-VM VM - Bench_VM - Destination ESX01.company.com

    }

    I get an error:

    The term 'ESX01.company.com' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or an executable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path has been included, make sure the path is correct, and then try again.

    What I am doing wrong?

    Thank you

    There are 2 problems with your script.

    (1) you can't get hostname like this

    (2) comparison of PowerShell uses the operator - eq.

    This should work better

    $vm = Get-VM -Name Bench_VM
    $chost = ($vm | Get-VMHost).Name
    if ($chost -eq "ESX01.company.com")
    {
         Move-VM -VM Bench_VM -Destination ESX02.company.com
    }
    else
    {
         Move-VM -VM Bench_VM -Destination ESX01.company.com
    }
