Can you be more the pair an iPhone with an iMac?

Apple support said I should use Air Drop to share files between my iphone and my iMac (both running newer systems) in response to my request for advice as to why I could not pair them up. Seems odd to me because in the devices section on the Mac (under Bluetooth), I can see iPhone and an option to connect to the network, but I said that the network is not available. My keyboard, mouse, and trackpad all work fine so any advice would be very welcome. Or can you be more the pair?

My pair of iPhone perfectly with my car for hands free calling.

It has never been possible to pair an iPhone to a computer (Mac or Windows) for any purpose, with the exception of personal hotspot (internet tethering) and then only if the plan from your cell phone carrier is supported. Things like Airdrop involve Bluetooth but the devices are not matched. See below for more information: Bluetooth: why can not connect my iPhone or iPad with another iOS device or my computer?
