  If none of the programs are able to read these files, then this means that these files are corrupted or they don't have enough information to read in them to be accessed by any program.

  I think that they could not properly have been recovered.

Is it an OEM machine (HP, Dell, etc.)? If Yes, go to the tech OEM Web site and see if anything but XP is supported on your machine. If there is no drivers for Vista/Windows 7, leave XP on it.   I'm a bit confused between your question and the answer. Have you already restored your system or if you are trying to implement and obtain information?
  In response to the original question, you can back up your entire hard drive, back up is called a System Image, it will be, as it is said, back up your system.
  A system backup / full copying data files, but not everything on the drive. You cannot use it to restore the entire system.
  I hope that sheds some light on it for you. And fear what (I'm trying to follow the number two of the answer now) you created a backup system, and are now trying to re access to your program files, I'm afraid, you're out of luck. I had to learn the hard way, too, so I hope you are getting information and are not in this situation.
