  Solved it myself:

  I was right - Gigabyte driver extension broken somehow to first 100 MB partittion access.

  Installed Windows on different (much smaller) disk and converted this TPG - activation succeeded without a hitch.

  The moral of the story: DO NOT install windows 7 on the 3 TB drive, unless you have a UEFI Bios! On the surface everything would work fine, but some things will be broken!

  Day 5. Attempt at 6.

  Partition Boot Camp delete and try again install via BCA. First question, is that when the startup it goes to a blank black screen. For a time nothing left.   I installed Windows 8.1 successfully for an external USB DVD. The system starts, but device drivers are missing, including wireless and wired networks.

  On the website of HP, I downloaded the device drivers for this machine/operating system combination. These downloaded files are .exe files. I put them on a USB key so that I can transfer them to the laptop. I thought I'd install them as follows:

  In the windows Device Manager, identify the network device, right click, select "install driver", point windows in the directory containing the .exe files downloaded.

  It does not work. Windows does not recognize the files .exe as pilots.

  Q1: I'm supposed to perform each of these .exe files (IE, which will install the drivers, and windows will then they are present?

  Q2: Which of the 2.3GBytes drivers should I install? If I install the network drivers Windows will be able to "search the Internet" and find all the other missing drivers?
