Cluster on different ESX-ESXi

Hola,

UN tenemos con 2 nodos ESX cluster. Los nodos replaced its ESX 3.5 version back.

Espero vuestras great thanks for the help.

Saludos,

Marc

1. instalar en el nuevo nodo ESXi 4.1 Podemos y seguir utilizando ESX (migrando has 4.1) in los otros back? Esta soportado?

So, no any problema esta totally soportado hat.

2 hay alguna mid-week/requerimiento para o ESX ESXi a cluster mismo dentro solo use?

If the transport are Quebec City el siempre tenga el mismo cluster build in los ESX.

También lo important are todas los ESX vean las premium redes y same data warehouses.

Also important that if tenes a cluster esx mixtos, al menos tengas homogeneas con las vmware tools intaladas in las vms.

Saludos y buen Año!

We plan to upgrade our ESX ESX ESXi 5.1 4.1 host our preferred is method of upgrade via the Update Manager. In the 5.1 Update Manager documentation it provides the following:

"ESXi 4.x to 5.x UPGRADE ESXi is supported and ESX 4.1 for ESXi 5 MIGRATION is supported. Anyone know what are the difference between an upgrade and a migration? Am I'm going to completely rebuild the host or will it keep its settings.

Also run different versions of inside ESX (ESX 4.1 and 5.1 ESXi) the same cluster, supported? Any other consideration when running different versions of the same cluster. It will be a temporary problem while we work to get all hosts upgrade.

    Thank you.

Migration - is where you perform the migration of ESXi 4.x for a new installation of ESXi 5 x

Upgrade - is where you upgrade the existing ESXi 4.x host which will allow you to save the configuration of the host - things to keep in mind before you go is to ensure that existing equipment is supported by ESXi5 - you want to place the host to be upgraded in Maintenance mode - vCenter must be upgraded first

As long as vCenter is upgraded to version 5.x versions of ESXi can coexist in a cluster

    Hi all

    I have a cluster with 5 esx 4.0 u1-208167, which installed on IBM x 3550 M2 ((2 x Intel® Xeon™ processeur E5520) .)

    I want to add a server to server cluster .the is IMB x 3550 m3 (2 x Intel® Xeon™ processor E5620 4 c)

do I have to make a chenges on Esx servers / vm / vcenter when I add the new esx for my datacerter and to the cluster so I can do Vmotion / storage migrate this server in the cluater (I have the appropriate license and plug)?

    Thanks for the help

is there another way to activate the CEV on my existing cluster and does not create a new?

You can try to create a new cluster and select CVS it and move all your hosts to this cluster

should I turn off my vm all?

You will need to put the hosts in maintenance mode. So what you can do is put the host 1 in maintenance mode, virtual machines will move to host 2. Now move the new active EVC cluster host 1 and continue to do this until all of your hosts are in the cluster. You can try vMotion your VM 2 host to host 1 which is now in the new cluster, but it all depends on what your processor will hide VCA is activated... And if you cannot vMotion, virtual machine in a VCA not to an active evc cluster cluster, then Yes, you will have to turn off and restart your virtual machines in the new cluster

I also have SRM ad site.do I need to activate the CEV on the cluster, I have here (a different Vcenter)

    No u don't.

  • Question about ESX ESXi (for Cist_o ACS 5.2) vs

    Hello world

Thanks again for your help in advance. I don't know if I can cite another company name in VMWare here so I use "_".

Currently we want to install Cist_o ACS 5.2, who need ESX3.5 or 4.0. I would like to ask... do you think if I use ESXi instead? Or I have to use directly at ESX (not i)?

Also, I try to buy a Del_ server... for this purpose, and I can not want to install several Windows 2003/2008 for the application, the domain controller, print servers. What type of processor and RAM would you recommend (for a performance so so)?

Finally, what is the difference between license and without license for ESX and ESXi respectively?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Takami Chiro

    You can talk about Cisco

You can not just replace with ESX ESXi - they are built on a different Foundation for the service console, which would probably not ACS funciton properly.  Contact cisco for the future on it, as all future versions of ESX (including the v5, the current version) are the 'i' version only.

For the dell, its 100% depedent workload server.  If you have only a few users (less to, say 50), more a base quadcore with ~ 12 GB of RAM should be sufficient.

ESXi is only available with a free license.  Here is the FAQ on the differences:

  • Other system files as VMFS on ESX/ESXi

    Hello

Anyone know if it is possible or not to use a different file system VMFS on ESX/ESXi?

So I was able to mount the file system on a Linux machine. (Either by the presence of a Clusterfilesystem as OCFS, GFS or removing the LUN of the ESX and mount it to a machine DIF).

I also tried a Linux VMFS driver, but it seems that there is only a pilot experimental, read-only, which seems to be not refined.

the local is VMFS but then if it's about connected remotely, it can be NFS

  • Best way to go to ESX ESXi

I installed ESX 4 Trail on a host with the intentions to throw some virtual machines on it for testing only.   Of

course always go as non-scheduled plans for the finished VMS used long term testing.  The trial of

ESX expires soon, so I start looking into my options for this configuration.

We have a different configuration of ESX 3.5 with 3 guests and an iSCSI SAN shared storage environment.   We do not have

have an immediate plan to upgrade this 4.0 but will appear in the next quarter or two, I hope.

My question is what would be the best plan to move that 3 VMs on I have currently on the ESX 4 4i ESX host in the interim until I have install

    4 on the production environment.

I tried to use the VM converter for V7 V4 to hardware to run on ESX 3.5 hosts, but it caused a lot of disk

questions for windows that I have been unable to correct.

My understanding is that installation on ESX ESXi will wipe away all my outgoing partitions that will be deleted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are two options, depending on your environment.

What you basically have to do is to restore backup (with a few options) virtual machines.

1.) If you have enough space on your iSCSI storage space, move the virtual machine to your storage space. Install ESXi and attach it to the iSCSI storage.

    (2) in the case of a server and you have a little empty bays for HARD drives, add a new example RAID1 group, make primary to boot from, the ESXi installation and joining the existing data store "old."

3.) temporarily add an another HARD drive, copy of the VM on the HARD drive using the data store Navigator. Install ESXi and copy the virtual machine on the new data store.

4.) backup and restore the virtual computer.

  • ESX, ESXi and vCenter and virtual machines

Hello all - I need to re - certify my VCP this month so I decided to sit down this weekend to set up a virtual lab.  I managed to get ESX, ESXi and vCenter working all in s vm on my laptop in less than 4 GB.  I use Player version 3 for now.  I have Workstation 6.5 but I have to spend my VCP to get a key of 7 workstations and improve it.

The manual is a bit long, but here is the link if you are interested.  I'll update everything to Workstation 7 after my review.  I hope that some of you find it useful!

    Nice - Thanks for posting.

I doubt that you must update for Workstation 7 as VMplayer 3 is nothing else than a torn Workstation 7. It has the same basic functionality.

So, nothing will be different if you use Workstation

By the way - Starwind is really nice simulate a San.

Another interesting thing, that you know may not...

It is possible to assign up to 8 GB of RAM to your virtual ESXs, even if the host itself has only 4 GB of RAM.

    For this I have

    prefvmx.useRecommendedLockedMemSize = 'TRUE '.

    prefvmx.minVmMemPct = '5 '.

in the file config.ini from the host. Do not run and then

Using this trick, I was able to run 4 ESX virtual machines on my laptop 4 GB RAM running 2 k 3-32 bit host

  • How to create ESXi cluster or team two ESXi servers to avoid VMHA of HA?

    Hello world

The scene is, I have two machines Dell 2950 and want to install ESXi U4 or ESXi 4 on both machines.  The requirement is that I have to install Windows 2 K 8 Server as guest and installing MS SQL Server inside on HOST1 (for example). This will be a production server.  Now I want the APP or database on this to be highly available.  I can mirror whatever say who's here to HOST1 on another machine HOST2 and keep it to fail the course in time REAL.  OR can I team or bonds or group these two hosts using local storage (data warehouses) and without the use of third-party storage (I can't afford VMHA, because it involves SAN and SAN or NAS in turn need fail on).

In simple terms, the creation of ESXi cluster or team two ESXi servers to avoid VMHA of HA?

    TIA for all your contributions.

    -Nadine

    VnonCP

    Try Openfiler or FreeNas?

Both will allow you to use the local storage on your ESX as an NFS share.

Problem is that if your ESX host plant... you have a data store that is dead.

  • HA/DRS and a Cluster of 10 ESX host

    Hello

I would appreciate comments on best practices for HA and DRS configuration on the following configuration:

    • We have a cluster of 10 ESX host

    • 2 guests are related ONLY to datastore1

    • 8 guests are related ONLY to datastore2

    • All hosts are available and active in Lab Manager 3.02

    • We use no fences of network

    The questions are:

    1. If one of the hosts in the 'group' of 8 guests above fails, HA will restart the virtual machines on the 7 remaining or it will try to start on one of the 2 hosts in the different 'group' (which have no connectivity to datastore2). Please note that I use the term "group" to highlight the hosts connected to separate data warehouses.

    2. can we or must activate us DRS about this group in a perspective of Lab Manager? Even if we have a maximum of 8 hosts connected on the same VMFS volume, are we exceeding any rule DRS here?

    Thank you

    gogogo5

My best guess is that most should all magically work.

DRS won't even try to break you, he will always recommend you only migrants who are indeed possible.

Yes, normally I too would advocate this split into two different groups, but with the problem, they do not need to be joined (you have configurations for which a VM MUST go on 2 and the rest MUST go to the 8, and indeed, LM will refuse to cross pools of resources to achieve).

If disable you completely the DRS, LabManager uses a variant of the old (pre - 3.0) algorithms to try to find the compatible host less loaded (at deploy time) and put it there.

I'm too uncertain and curious about the HA situation. I have a feeling would be deeply confused on a default installation, it could be implemented, but it would be difficult to make the right constraints.

  • Compaired to ESX ESXi what are the limits of the differences of ESXi?

So, we have a great investment in ESX Server and now VMware released ESXi for free.

From what I've read I can't find all the differences other than the COS.

Is can someone please tell me why I wouldn't move to ESXi and lean on it when it's free and the support is less than half the price, it's on ESX?

I don't see anything about the ability of VCB with ESXi, DRA/HA functionality still intact when used with vCenter?

Today in the cost conscious times a penny saved is a good thing... Or is it!

Anyone who had seen the differences and limitations between ESX and ESXi, I would greatly appreciate feedback...

  • Request for ESX ESXi V

    Hi all

I hope that someone will be able to respond to my request.

ESXi has less content than ESX but they are both the same core either the application version number is the same, or the two version number could be compiled differently.

If someone could answer, I would really appriciate it.

    Thank you

    Hello

ESX and ESXi use roughly the same vmkernel, but that's where things end up. It's really a different beast, more precisely from a safety perspective. For one, there is no feature of SC vswif, but a vmkernel device to be used for the unit of management. There is a lack of defense in depth within the unit of management as well. For the most part while ESX has a firewall built into the supreme court, ESXi does not work and its management unit must be behind a firewall.

SC is a virtual machine in ESX, ESXi management appliance is running within the main vmkernel.

There is no AD, LDAP, Kerberos, etc support in ESXi

VCB can only be used to perform backups.

RCLI and VIC are the best ways to manage ESXi.

Most people break the shell of security to allow SSH in.

ESXi is designed to be behind a firewall. ESX didn't necessarily need to be behind a plus, but does not lose if its management is also located behind a firewall.
