Direct upgrade from esx 3.5 to esx 4.1
Hello
I've already upgraded to vCenter 2.5 to 4.1, now I'm upgraded by train from esx 3.5 to esx 4.1 and all of the articles and videos that I have read say that I need to download the upgrade zip file and do the upgrade through VMware host update utility (as I am only upgrade 2 hosts).
However, when I try to download the zip file, the only option I get is
ESX 4.1 Update 1 (updated the ZIP of ESX 4.0)
Use this package with vCenter Update Manager 4.1 U1 or vihostupdate vCLI or esxupdate command line to upgrade ESX ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1 update 1.Which allows an upgrade to version 4.0 (or if she says). Can I use this zip file?
I even went back through all the versions 4.0, and there is no upgrade for 3.5 anywhere zip file?
How can I make this update of the utility of the upgrade using the host?
Concerning
Steven
In my view, an error in the above steps.
Are you using ESX and ESXi, you will need to download ESX 4.1 install ISO for upgrade from ESX3.5 to ESX4.1 driver
You must use vCenter Update manage or esxupgrade.sh for upgrade. No other tool as vihostupdate, host update utility etc. are not supported.
For more details from vCenter update manager, refer to the admin guide and for esxupgrade.sh, see http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1009440&sliceId=2&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=170100028&stateId=1%200%20170096294

All,
Sorry, it's most likley a stupid question, but I can't find the below upgrade the file anywhere in the download section. I looked, looked, had someone else to look at and I can not find. The file is: upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip
Someone at - it had a link?
Point these KB of mine who need the upgrade file.
At this rate I'll just rebuild with 4.1 one at a time.

I have 4 hosts ESX 3.5 U4 and a 2.5 VCenter VCenter server. I want to start trials for a potential upgrade 4.0 to U2. Download ESX, I see two options - VMWare ESX 4 Update 2 and VMWare ESX 4 Update 2 Installable. What is the difference?
Mahalo, Bill
The installable version is ESXi. You want VMware ESX 4 Update 2

Administrative tools free for ESX?
Hello
I'm not positive if this is the correct forum section, but I downloaded ESX Server 4.0 and you have run it on a virtual machine to test. I just wanted to see what all she could do in the console menu. It cannot do much from there. The vSphere client is amazing, as expected. I was wondering, if. Is there a free tool from vmware for use with ESX Server that will at least give me the basic features - download the virtual machine to the data store, run the virtual machine. I really like the idea of ESX Server, VMware Server, but to have bought the vSphere expensive licenses are not an option for me right now.
Thank you
use the Client that you download from the IP address of your ESXi, vSphere host. Install the client, point the customer on your ESXi host, connect. Go ├a configuration, feature license, change. Here, you can connect your key.

(No) Download patches?
Hello
I just upgraded from 2.5 U4 VC to vSphere Server 4 U1. I improved extension manager upgrade also.
My patch repositry shows what appears to be a complete repositry, it contains patches ESX 3.5 and ESX 4 patches, BUT, if I look at the actual downloaded patches directory structure then there is no downloaded ESX 4 patches?
Why didn't it downloaded all the patches? Runs the scheduled do not do task and there is no error when it runs. There is also no email confirmation more after race - probably nothing has been downloaded.
See you soon,.
Rich
VSphere Update Manager is not actually download the files in the patch until you try to do a step or remediation against this batch of patches. Try to stage patches to a host and then look into the patchstore and you should see some .vib.

Hello all, I need help for the upgrade of our ESX servers.
We have 7 ESX 4 Server (Advanced) and a (Advanced) Vcenter server. I moved the virtual machines of 2 ESX servers to other servers and installed
the news using the iso file to update 1. There is therefore 5 left ESX servers to update, but I don't want to do this by the migration of virtual machines to others
servers and installation of the host with iso update 1.
So I downloaded ESX - 4.0.0 - update01.zip and Vmware Vsphere Upgrade Guide. What is the good guide? Chapter 14 (update an ESX/ESXi host using Offline bundles with the vihostupdate utility) is the right one for me, OK?
I don't really understand how to upgrade hosts with the vihostupdate command. I installed the VMware vSphere Management Assistant (vMA) virtual appliance on any of the ESX host and now?
ESX 4.0 U1 server upgrade is not supported with vSphere Host Update Utility. You can use vHUU for the upgrade to ESXi 40-U1 with online portal.

You try to download the iso of ESX4 - failed to connect
Im trying to download "esx - DVD - 4.0.0 - 164009.iso" on the wizard 'New departure', but I get up an error:
Cannot open a session
error: a web exception has occurred during the upload of a file
What can be wrong? I tried my client (PC) and server vCenter (VUM where also)
I found this problem caused by McAfee VirusScan antivirus installed on vCenter server access protection rules. If you have a McAfee software installed on your vCenter server, check the log of Access Protection for items that may be getting blocked by McAfee. Once I have updated the rules of McAfee incriminated and restarted the "VMware Update Manager" and 'VMware VirtualCenter Management Webservices' services I didn't question.

2 quick questions related to upgrading
Guy
More to my previous question:
- Update indeed VUM ESX host without worrying shipped (preinstalled as firmware) or installable? I'm afraid in the case of "embedded" I wondered to check with the supplier of server hardware get involved? or I need?
- Do we need to download the exact 4.x ISO regarding the ESX 3.x?, for example if the current ESX host is ESXi (with i) integrated then I download ESXi 4.1 (with i) embedded, if current ESX ESX (not i) I should download ESX 4.x (not i). I believe same rules applies to the installable version.
I want to assure you that the upgrade would be without error with NO problem of incorrect version upgrade.
Thanks in adv
Just noticed the ESX not i mention and need to clarify. ESXi can be installed on a local hard drive like ESX. ESX is often referred to as classic ESX. The fundamental difference between the two is that ESXi does not have the traditional Linux Console. vSphere 4.1 is the latest version of ESX Classic, so it might be wise to migrate any upgrade to ESXi and beat the rush. There is no specific version of ESX Classic manufacturer.

ESXi 4.1 vSphere vs 4 Vsphere hypervisor
Hello
I am confused in versions of esxi.
I found on the web site that vmware Vsphere hypervisor (Esxi) is free and no license must be purchased.
So what's the average of Vsphere ESXi 4.1 version? Is this a licensed version? How this version is compared with the free esxi version?
I have the license for vcenter foundation and licenses processor... Can I use vsphere 4.1 for the production facility?
Please calrify this free version of vsphere hypervisor with vsphere 4.1 esxi edition...
Can I manage esxi vsphere 4.1 with virtual center? Is it recommended to use in the configuration of production? or I have to download esx 4.1 normal to use for production?
Hey there, it's like this:
The VMware hypervisor is ESXi. There are different versions of ESXi today, are more up-to-date ESXi 4.1 and 4.0.
You can download ESXi 4.1 and 4.0 and use with a stand-alone free license.
If you have purchased the kit of Essentials, you can either download ESXi 4.1 or 4.0 (ditto for vCenter)
ESXi 4.1 brings a number of improvements over version 4.0:
http://www.VMware.com/support/vSphere4/doc/vsp_41_new_feat.html
Keep in mind that if you want to install vCenter Server 4.1, you need a 64 bit OS, while 4.0 runs in 32-bit.
If this post was useful/solved your problem, please mark the points of wire and price as seem you. Thank you!
