  OK, I managed to fix it myself, so I'll post what I did here:

  The problem has been caused by TabMixPlus which also has its own session manager, so I had to reinstall this addon.

  I also had to disable/re-enable each addon and delete all my cookies/cache because of some other strange issues which occurred, but one who reads this may not be no need to do so if they have other problems.

  Hi, 41 of Firefox, you must use the add-on tab override (browser.newtab.url replacement), to make changes to the page tab.

  Once installed, open the Add-ons (Ctrl + Shift + A) Manager > Extensions, and then look for the new tab override and click Options to set your preference.

  Notice, if you want only the new tab to be the same as your home page, you can use the Add on new tab homepage instead.

  You will then need to restart Firefox for all changes to take effect.

  I am writing an application that calls the browser and sends a URL to open for the user. This works perfectly on OS 4.6 to 5.0.   I'm working from memory here, but I believe that the call to b.displayPage (url) displays the browser to your URL, and then b.showBrowser () starts the 2nd tab. If you remove the call to b.showBrowser () on 6.0 +, I believe that the second tab will not be created and only your URL will be displayed.

  I'll check this in a sample, but I remember this coming upwards before and I'm pretty sure that's where the problem comes.
