ESXi 4.1 update 1 Embedded, ESXi Embedded 5?

I can update ESXi 4.1 update 1 Embedded ESXi 5 embedded?

as I don't see this on the compatibility guide.

Stephen

If you do not use VUM you must start with the installation of VMware 5 CD. It might be interesting to do a backup configuration before installation. With a backup of the configuration, you can do a new installation that can eliminate installation issues if you have everything installed drivers not supported. Make sure that validate you the HCL before any upgrade to ensure that all your hardware is supported. http://VMware.com/go/HCL

  • Upgrade on esxi embedded 4.0 to 4.1 using dvd?

Esxi embedded running off usb key update using dvd?

I ask because my integrated existing esxi is fucked after I tried to upgrade using AUVs. AUVs process has failed with an error, but after a reboot, the client vsphere Summary tab shows it has been updated (IE to 4.1), but continuous AUVs to draw the attention of this upgrade is missing. I checked using the command line upgrade bundles are indeed missing. I post another thread with more details, after that I'm going through them. In the meantime, can I pass by jumping into a dvd to reinstall esxi embedded on the USB?

    Hello

There isn't really a difference between esxi embedded and esxi installable. ESXi embedded is installable just esxi installed on a card usb or sd instead of on the hard drive. By this logic, the answer to my question would be: Yes, it can be done.

    Fix

Just to add that some on-board ship ESXi from suppliers, which add their specific beams/drivers.

So if you want to reinstall, try to use the specific provider ESXi ISO if available, otherwise use VMware ESXi ISO and install specific bundles of the seller after if necessary.

The other option is just for the manual installation of the patches/Bundles on your current installation and VUM will pick them up.

  • ESXi embedded - record...

Hi guys, we have some servers with ESXi embedded - they came with ESXi 4.0; When you look at the console it says logging is disabled (all good).  However after update 4.0 U3, he says is no longer recording is disabled at the level of the console - I googled around, but couldn't find any documants on disabling; and I don't want to write logs to the flash all the time.  Can someone let me know how to disable the local recording and just send the logs to a syslog server?

    See you soon

As written in the KB scratch could be an option... but you can also disable loggin or redirect them to a syslog server.

  • Patching Embedded ESXi 3.5 and redundancy

    Hello

I tried to find answers to theses in the documentation, but failed so far.

I have a Dell 2950 PowerEdge server with ESXi 3.5 embedded.   I understand that I can be updated by using the tool VMware Infrastructure Update, installed on a physical server separate.  Where is the update applied? It is applied directly to the memory card Flash shipped?   When to apply?  If it fails, I can just re - apply the 3.5 version via the update tool?   Is there any built-in redundancy, so that if he does not validate successfully, I can just reboot and the old version of ESXi will still be on the map?

If there are all the sections of ESXi documentation that refer to this, please let me know.

    Thank you very much!

    Brian

Welcome to the VMware community forums.   If you mount the USB drive in another operating system, you will see these partitions

    Hypervisor0 - 4 MB

    Hypervisor1 - 47 MB

    Hypervisor2 - 47 MB

    Hypervisor3 - 500 MB (is mounted as /store

H1 and H2 are where ESXi store its firmware.  H0 has SysLinux, which is the original boot loader.  It will be either boot ESXi of H1 or H2.  When you start with a fresh install, Syslinux will start ESXi of H1 and H2 will be empty.   H1 will be mounted by ESXi as /bootbank and H2 will be /altbootbank.

When you patch your host, the firmware is written in /altbootbank and the H0 is changed to start from the H2.  The next time you start H2 becomes /bootbank, and H1 is /altbootbank.  When you patch it again reverses again.

The good thing about this is that easily return you to the previous version.   Press SHIFTR on priming initial screen and you have the option to revert to the previous version, if the host has problems after the upgrade.  ESXi save a backup of your system in /bootbank/state.tgz (for the on-board version local.tgz) configuration.  If you use the SHIFT keyR after a month, any change in config, you made since then would be lost.

  • Install ESXI embedded will not recognize NIC

I tried to install a server ESXI embedded last night, but the facility when it does not recognize that there is a network card installed.

I have a network card added, it's the value connected and connect to power on.  At the beginning I wanted to set up all my virtual machines in a network segment local so I thought maybe it was the question so I turned off the VM and changed the NETWORK card to one host adapter, but the installation always fails with the same error.

Does anyone else have this problem?  The installation cannot continue without detect a network card.

I already have a virtual 2008R2 domain controller and NETWORK adapter works fine.

    Welcome to the community,

ESXi you selected as the guest in the Wizard New VM operating system. The virtual NETWORK card model that is used/created for the virtual machine depends on the selection of the OS. Open the virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file to see what kind of NETWORK card has been created and add ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" if it does not exist. If you want to manually change the file mark .vmx that tab of the virtual machine in VMware Workstation is closed, so that the configuration file is reread once you are done with editing.

  • Hard drives and ESXi embeded?

For those of you who already use embeded ESXi on built in flash media in your dell/hp/ibm server etc..  ESXi embeded requires all to be present so that he can use hard disks or can you only run the complete installation on flash support.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

You can run your ESXi host entirely from flash media, your host does not need to have spinning disks.

Of course, your virtual machines will need real storage of race. If your host will have a need to be able to connect to the storage via SAN, NAS or NFS.

What I understand, starting with ESXi 4.1, it is even possible to boot from PXE and/or SAN directly, so in this case you would not even flash media anymore.

    Hope this helps,

  • Dell ESXi Embedded 4u2 - question for a real customer

There is confusion to come among the members of our team on what exactly includes Dell in the licensed versions of the ESXi embedded (Advanced and Enterprise Plus) on their servers.  Surprisingly, the Dell customer service team is just as confused and we get nowhere.

The words of his Dell as VSphere rather ESXi just because the docs say it supports VMotion, DRS, FT, etc..

Someone who actually bought a built-in server can confirm or deny the embed is more than a simple ESXi and also includes elements such as VMotion, FT and DRS?

Or is it just ESXi and we go toVMware and VSphere VCenter license as well.

    Thank you

    Everything they say is this:

We will sell you an edition of ESXi who is licensed for vMotion, etc..

If they haven't sold a vCenter license, you don't have the management interface to use.

  • ESXi Installable vs ESXi Embedded

Can someone please explain the differences between ESXi Installable, ESXi Embedded vs?

    See you soon.

The installation program will install the CD to the hard drive or USB / SD card.

  • HA with ESXi embedded

I just got an evaluation of VMware Infrastructure working with some blades HP BL495 using ESXi embedded (on the internal USB flash drives).

I configured a data store on a NFS partition on a NetApp data warehouses and the virtual machines will work perfectly and VMotion works correctly.

However, when I try to create a cluster, I get the following error:

HA agent has an error: host in Cluster HA must have active swap userworld

I tried following KB article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004177 but am not which way I have to use with a NFS data store. All the obvious options fail.

I saw a few comments on the web who suggest that it is not possible to use HA with swap userworld of iSCSI or NFS storage. Is this really the case? Is there no workaround solution if it is?

This scary chain is a real name of the data store. Name only appearing in client VI is just a symlink, so that's ok.

My recommendation: do not point uwswap to the data store. Create a folder such as ./uwswap/---

  • Confused in what I need [ESXi Embedded; ESX Installable; ESX 3.5]

    Hello team.

Let me explain what I first: I need to run 6 virtual machines and manage these 6 VMs through a single window. I might be able to manage all VMs 6 using the single window (in general-, this could be any application). To manage, I mean, create snapshots, go back, use them as if I had VMware workstation. I don't need any other features. I'm looking in the plug of the machine: Quad core; 8 GB; SATA RAID.

Now my question is how do I select ESXi Embedded or Installable or standalone ESX. Is there documentation that shows these differences or videos showing what are interfaces?

I read the difference between ESXi and ESX and it was something citing on linux required for ESX. Does this mean that my whitebox will need Linux installed before that I could install ESX?

ESXi is barebone architecture, which means, I'll lose admin capabilities?

You think, with these questions, am confused? Thanks for any help in advance

Novice user with virtualization - Manny

    Hello Manny,

In fact, it's the same interface and the program, you use esx and esxi.

Free ESXi, esx costs money and can do all kinds of magic to keep near 100% availability.

You will need to have an admin on windows pc to run the VI client from.

The VI-client (or VMware Infrastructure client) connects to your host, and from there, you can create new guests, create the snapshot, return etc.

NO, you don't need linux. In fact my esx 3i is booting from a USB key no OS is required on the hard disk.

I have attached a photo where you can see the interface to manage hosts.

  • ESXi embedded for Intel modular server?

    Hello world

Our new Intel modular server will happen in a week, and we install ESXi Server in this subject.  I love the benefits of security of the embedded server...  Anyone know if there is a version shipped for this server?

    Thank you

    Mike

There is only a single modular server Intel that I can find in the HCL (http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility) and it only support ESXi Installable.  Featurewise, embedded and installable are the same - the only difference being that installable requires a local HD to install to (but you can hack to run from a USB flash drive.
